Trip for Puerto Plata

The Allegro Puerto Plata was the perfect all-inclusive hotel for a single, young woman. The beach was beautiful (especially for kayaking) and the accommodations at the resort were fabulous. The staff was very friendly and helpful to me, especially since I know very little Spanish. The entertainment at night was wonderful, especially the karaoke. I absolutely loved The Plaza, a shopping mall, which was just a lovely five minute walk. It was here that I got incredible deals on excursions. I went horseback riding in the jungle, which was an amazing experience. Then, I went on a city tour of Puerto Plata, where I visited the Rum factory, Amber Museum, Cathedral, and went on top of the mountain on a cable car (super cool). I felt like I got my money's worth on the excursions. The hotel was missing an adequate gym. It didn't bother me though, because I did a lot of walking to compensate. I think I had the best vacation ever. Though, I must say, leaving Puerto Plata, customs confiscated batteries and my umbrella, which was baffling. Oh well, I'll definitely be returning to DR again.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Even though US dollars are accepted in DR, exchange your money. It makes it a lot easier to get by. Also, if you go to Puerto Plata and stay at the Playa Dorada Complex, check out The Plaza, they have amazing stores and entertainment.

Low Cash=Low Service You get what u $ 4

Locals take over on weekends....all spanish speaking environment during this time. All of the restaurants are not open daily so it pressures you to go to the buffet. If the front desk says that they are on their way, they are not. (dont waste yout time and deal with the issue yourself)

Pleasantly surprised

We arrived at the resort early afternoon and were cheerfully greeted by the staff. Check-in was quick and we were in our room in no time. The resort is comprised of a series of small 'villas' each of which houses 3-5 rooms/suites. This was a nice change from the usual highrise hotel. We got a family suit - one King and two twin beds. The room was not remarkable but the beds were comfortable, the AC worked and the staff kept it plenty clean. Our trip coincided with the Easter holiday so we found some of the off resort activities not available. That being said there were still plenty of activities to occupy everyone – we all enjoyed our visit to the waterfalls. The pools and beach at the resort were kept clean and very conveniently accessible. The pools closed at 6:00pm each night a little earlier than expected but not a real problem. The buffet offered a nice variety of foods to cover all our tastes. We also dined at the Oriental and Italian restaurants; we enjoyed both. The staff truly was wonderful. They took the time to answer any questions, fulfill our requests and even just chat if we wanted. They made our time at the resort very enjoyable. Another reason we chose this resort is it's location in was less likely to be chosen by the college 'Spring Breakers' and we were right. This made for a quieter and more relaxing stay. The only real negative we experienced on our trip had nothing to do with the resort or any of the activities we planned. On our return flight home there was a problem with the computer system at customs so we (and a few hundred of our closest friends LOL) were delayed and ended up missing our connection. In the future we will likely make sure we have a bit more time when making an international connection.

The great, the not so good, and the bad

We had a good time except for a few setbacks. The resort grounds was nice and clean. The dining areas were very clean and well maintained during dining periods. All staff did their best to make things great for us. We has great dining experiences at the mexican and especially at the oriental restaurant. The variation in food could have been a little better at the buffet dining. Also, we found it rather bothersome not to be able to to take something away from the beach restaurant seeing that we had a 3yo with us. Our worst experience was the presence of ratbats, their feces, and their leftover food on our balcony and furniture nightly. The cleanig crew did their best to clean-up but mess on the wall and furniture looked too nasty for us to hang out on our balcony (which had a great view). I do believe this problem could be easily rectified by changing the roofing on the balcony to a smooth, flat surface that the bats cannot hang on to--(just a tip!). Overall, a great experience for our 3yo but was just ok for my wife and me because of our experiences at resorts in Jamaica, Punta Cana, Acapulco, Cozumel, etc. We would recommend this hotel for the kid entity and the price value but not much more.

Allegro, Puerto Plata

I thought this was a great place to stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was great, much variety and tasty. The grounds are beautiful, the pools are nice with lots of room for sunning or swimming. There seemed to be alot of energy and the staff was always dancing or exercising with the guests.

Hotel is all inclusive. I haven't tried that before but, now highly recommend this. I was not dissatisfied with the selection and it was a more economical option, esp for a family vacation.

Family vacation

We enjoyed the beach. Staff were friendly and tried to get guests to participate - if you don't mind being silly, it can be fun. Vendors were there but were not intrusive. We were lucky and had good weather. Food is not American but there is food available for even picky eaters
