Family vacation

Stayed for five nights with family. Overall a good experience. Excellent well kept and beautiful property. Food however is very*** expensive. Todd is definitely not value for amount spent. Buffet choices are limited. On last day a staff in Medi restaurant was quite in appropriate with us and refused to join two tables to accommodate us. Our neighboring tables had this done. We had to do it ourselves. Shore restaurant is good but pricey. Activity centre is suboptimal. Usually have to look for staff and once we found someone at 11.45 am, we were told to return the next day as it was time for them to wind up. They lost our business

Good service and clean clean clean

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for one week Mar 2014. It is a massive beautiful property on a secluded part of the island. The photos on their website are exactly what you will see. The service is impeccable, and the staff is super friendly. If something is not right, and you say something it will be fixed. No matter what the request is their answer is always... yes. We actually took notice of a couple requests that other guests had, some ridiculous, but the answer was always yes. It's like the staff is trained, "... when in doubt, just say yes." --- more importantly after they say yes, they get it done. They will go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied and have a good experience. A personal example... we arrived late in the evening at the hotel and we were hungry. We wanted to try a local restaurant as we had a whole trip to eat at the hotel so we asked the staff for a recommendation. They weren't sure what would be open at that time of night so 2 of them called, must have been 10 places, to find a place we could eat at while we had a cocktail in the lobby. They eventually found a place, reserved us a table, and printed us directions. The restaurant they sent us to stayed open for us and was fantastic (The Boathouse). Our favorite points of the hotel were... - it's secluded (30 mins from downtown, 45 mins from airport, 1.5ish hours to westpunt). Private beach, private tennis, private paths along the beach, private bonfires... private private. - Live music outside every night - The rooms are spacious and super clean - Everything is super clean (beach, pool area, lobby, public restrooms, the grounds, everything) - Everyone has a "can do" attitude which is great - Everyone from the front desk to the towel guy is super friendly - The food at Medi is very good (we did not eat at Shore or Splash) - Everyone speaks English (everyone speaks English, Dutch, Spanish, Papiamento, and some German and Portuguese) I only have good to say about our experience at this hotel. I would absolutely come again, and will recommend it to friends and family. Tips... - bring a snorkel and fins. If you don't have one buy one and bring it. - bring scuba shoes or aqua socks. Many of the beaches are rocky outside of the hotel grounds. - rent a car. This is a big island, taxis are expensive, gas is cheap, and everything is spread out. - try to arrive and depart between 9-5 that way your options for car rental are the biggest at the airport. - brings lots of sunblock... it is super duper expensive everywhere on the island.

As good as advertised

This is a former Hyatt on the ocean. The place is gorgeous. The staff is phenomenal and go out of their way to help. My only suggestion would be to have more variety on the restaurant menus. And they need some type on nightly entertainment that takes advantage of the beautiful views from the lobby or pool area.

Gorgeous hotel is quiet location

I had my first solo trip of my life and am very thankful I chose the Santa Barbara Beach Resort. The location was quiet and off the beaten path so you will need a car if you wish to explore the island. You would never need to leave the resort if you didn't want to though. The restaurants were all great and the lobby bar was very inviting. Mainly because of Heavenly who was so pleasant every evening she worked. The views from every area of the hotel are stunning. The grounds are gorgeous and the front desk staff was very professional.....they would call you by name. The pool area was beautiful as well and the hotel is extremely clean. This resort is worth every penny and was an extremely great value. I would stay here over and over and over again on the island of Curacao.

romantic getaway

not a 5 star hotel by any means. very nice property but lacked housekeeping and amenities. I asked for a new box of tissue after 3 days of an empty casing, the housekeeper made a point to tell me it was the last box on the property. and wanted a tip. fine dining was horrible, we waited for an hour to watch several plates pass us by only to receive a cold plate. the chef is supposed to be someone of a high caliber but we, and several others have nothing good to say about a $200 second hand cold steak and lobster. When you order filet mignon, you are really getting tenderloin. and cold at that. eat off of the property. there is a great restaurant right at the end of the road at the entrance to the resort. go there!

This hotel provides a great experience for people looking for a romantic stay, I would even suggest against bringing kids if possible. The food was great, but very pricey, in addition to the drinks.

Great Hotel but not a 5 star experience

This hotel was originally a Hyatt and it is the best hotel on Curacao but it is not a 5 star hotel experience like one would expect from the Ritz, St. Regis or Four Seasons. The location is remote but if you are looking for a stay-cation resort it is perfect and even comforting to come home after the wild west show that is Curacao on some weekend nights. It is a 30-45 minute drive (really) to get anywhere on the island because the hotel is located on a 1,500 acre old plantation on the southeast side of the island. It takes 20 minutes simply to exit the the property. If one wants to see any other part of the Island (Curacao is much bigger then it looks) then renting a car is a must because taxis are slow to respond and charge exorbitant fees. An example is $65-$85 average to drive the 45 minutes one-way to the airport. If you're like us and want to get more flavor then you'll need a rental car which is best rented on the island after you arrive instead of at the airport, expect to pay $40-$60 / day for a 4 door compact and that seems like a bargain. Try G&H car rentals closer to the hotel, they will come pick you up and the owner gives great tips about Curacao. The hotel itself is lovely, comfortable and still feels very new although again not a real 5 star experience. The private beach and pool area are almost perfect. The Old Quarry / Pete Dye golf course has to be one of the best island courses in the world and is well-maintained. The area where Santa Barbara falls very short of typical American expectations is service. The hotel is staffed by island locals who seem to be constantly overwhelmed and undertrained. One feels like the intentions are good but there is no one in charge looking after the customer experience. An example would be an average wait time of 1.5 hours for any meal and common things like checking back on a table, clearing dinnerware or bringing a check in reasonable time simply does not happen. Overall, the Santa Barbara is a lovely, relatively inexpensive 4 star hotel I would recommend to anyone, especially those on a budget or with a family, but it is NOT a 5 star hotel experience.

Love that you can do anything or nothing at all at the hotel. Food at the Shore was delicious! The staff at the hotel were unbelievable - went above and beyond especially Eli, Mem, Julio and Kerry (Shore). Wish the shuttle service to town was more frequent like a half-day service in the morning and evening.

Beautiful, private and pricey

Overall, this is a nice hotel. The grounds and beach are beautiful. The rooms are slightly better than average, but unfortunately I found to be very dirty as the cleaning staff seems to do little more than change the sheets and do a quick sweep. The pillows in our room smelled sour and I requested they be changed but not sure if this ever happened as I didn't notice much change during our stay. Also, I don't think the shower was ever cleaned once during our 10 days there. Considering they add an extra 14% service charge this was disappointing. Other than that, the staff was freindly and helpful and the food was very good at all options at hotel and beach just pricey with service charge and tax ~20%). FYI -no jacuzzi. Go with local dive shops if you scuba dive -half the price for personal private dives vs. large boat group! Get a car! It is so worth it if you ever want to leave the hotel. No night life at the hotel. If you're in good shape, do the 1 hour hike to the top of Mt. Christoffell, you can see the whole island from the top and even Venezuela on a clear day.
