The Alta Hotel, among the best of Costa Rica's small boutique hotels, offers its guests a sublime combination of understated luxury, pampering services, and San Jose's finest cuisine. The hotel has an old-world ambiance, offering a sharp contrast to the modern, hotel look. When you arrive you will feel like you've entered an elegant hacienda in 17th Century Spain.
The setting is warm and welcoming, but not pretentious. Go up to your room, relax and savor the view, soon an exquisite feast will be served in La Luz.
The Alta is the perfect place to begin your journey into Costa Rica's natural splendor; to enjoy your wedding or honeymoon; or after days in the wilds of Costa Rica. Ideally located in the hills above Costa Rica's business center, it is only 5 minutes from the Forum, Los Robles, and Multi-Plaza and 15 minutes from the airport or downtown San Jose .
Although boutique, the hotel has what you need: meeting rooms, business center, internet, and event meals served by La Luz chefs. The hotel also offers dry cleaning, lobby and reception.

The Alta Hotel Rooms

Deluxe
Deluxe offers two queen beds with air conditioning, alarm clock, balcony / terrace, bathrobe, bathroom amenities, cable / satellite TV, color TV, hairdryer, internet access, iron / ironing board, mini bar, radio, refrigerator, safe in room and telephone. Two queen-size beds in handsomely appointed rooms very stylish, small and elegant, that feature spacious balconies with expansive views or private patios with lush tropical gardens.
Junior Suite
Junior Suite offers two queen or one king bed and one sofa bed with air conditioning, alarm clock, balcony / terrace, bathrobe, bathroom amenities, cable / satellite TV, color TV, hairdryer, internet access, iron / ironing board, mini bar, radio, refrigerator, safe in room and telephone. A generous, two-room suite includes a bedroom with a king-size bed or two queen-size beds. The adjoining living area includes an additional sofa bed and television. All suites feature spacious balconies or private patios.

La Luz
La Luz, rated one of the best restaurants in Central America, has a delicious, innovative fusion style-a splash of Costa Rica with Continental and California influences. By early 2000, La Nacion, Costa Rica's largest newspaper, named La Luz the country's best restaurant, awarding it five forks, its highest honor. The restaurant is airy and drenched with light during the day; during the evening the soft lights and warm feel of tropical woods and ochre finishes exude romance. Large windows open out to a cobalt blue pool, a 100-year old Guanacaste tree and a dazzling view of the Valley of the Sun.

Not what I expected

the room was beyond small it was cramped. Screens on sliding doors had holes and bugs got in easily. Pool was cold, no towels available and the one I found had huge hole in it. The reservation was for 3 adults and there were not enough towels, shampoo, etc for 3.

NOT a 4 star experience

This was the only accomodation in Costa Rica where we were disappointed. The service was poor with no followthrough from front desk to delivery of services. The hotel quite run down and in need of repair with no airconditioning in the rooms. WiFi was available but only if you sat in one position on the balcony; and it was weak at that. The fitness room was in ill repair with no towels and the pool furniture was torn and worn. This was a 1 star hotel at 4 star prices.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

There's a huge Western-style shopping mall 15 min away by taxi.
