Great place to stay

The hotel is a converted older home which has been furnished in Louis XV style and is very comfortable and fairly well maintained. The floors and rooms are spotless, they are given a daily cleaning which results in a beautiful sheen to the clay tiles. Most of the guests were very quiet conscious with little door slamming and loud conversations. The one glaring exception was an experience that my companion suffered in room #7 which fronted on the courtyard and pool area. the jalosy windows allowed her to overhear all late night conversations in the courtyard area which unfortunately interupted her sleep. I had room #6 which I recommend because it overviews a tiny courtyard which is used only for ventilation. The dining in the hotel was exquisite. the breakfast fare consisted of wonderful coffee, fresh fruit and several types of breads and pastries which were very addictive. Dinner in the Oasis Restaurant was some of the finest dining I have ever experienced and the price was reasonable. A couple of evenings we ventured across the street to dine in a couple of Columbian restaurants owned by locals. Although the furniture was all handmade from wood scraps and the food preperation was done with all fresh and locally purchased food ( I question whether refrigeration is present) the meals were made ready in good time and the results were well worth the $4 each we paid. We even met some locals who could speak English which helped in ordering and identifying the various menu items. The hotel is located areas surrounded by bars and razor wire but inside the traveler feels quite safe. Within a block though, the neighborhood improves immensley with the presence a beautiful park. I will stay there again and next time I will have a better command of the Spanish language.

A Great Hotel

The Hotel Santo Tomas was the friendliest hotel my wife and I have ever stayed in. From the time we checked in until the time we left the staff treated us so very well.Everyone was always smiling and friendly and doing their best to make our stay in Costa Rica as pleasant as possible. Our room was fantastic, the largest in the hotel and the resturant was superb. I still miss the great food and the nice talks with Carlos, our waiter. The amenities were good ( gym and pool and internet access) and the location was perfect for touring around downtown San Jose. We will definatley recommend this hotel to anyone we know who is going to Costa Rica and hope to return someday ourselves.

Very satisfied

I was looking for a hotel that was not one of the chain plaster palaces. I saw the ad for the Hotel Santo Tomas, crossed my fingers and made the reservation. I cannot quite adequately say just how pleased I was. The hotel is small, and while not on the prettiest street in San Jose, it is quite beautiful, quaint and close to many attraction. The hotel has a locked front gate and a lockable cabinet in the room. There are several outdoor sitting areas, a small pool and lovely plantings. Hotel Santo Tomas personnel are courteous, helpful and always on hand. The rooms are plain but have all you need. They are sparkling clean as is the entire hotel. The attached restaurant is small, the food is quite good and beautifully served. I recommend this hotel with no reservations.

The local attractions, museums and such are a close walk. Taxis abound and there are plenty of buses. I personally would not recommend driving if you are a novice. Traffic is heavy and the drivers have little regard for pedestrians.

Great place to experience downtown

Very centrally located and only a block from the main square of town this hotel is a great deal. City itself is not safe after dark. Don't go out with anything valuable and stick close to the square or just get a taxi. For an overnight you don't have to leave because the room is comfortable and the jacuzzi is nice.

Great Place to stay

You will be hard pressed to find a better staff than here! The hotel is in a great place to either make a home base or to rest before or after a long flight. within walking distance of almost any thing you may want see or do. The manager and his staff can help you get buses, or even a rental car and some of the best rates in all of Costa Rica.

Very clean, quiet hotel with modern amenities.

The Hotel Santo Tomas was clean and comfortable. The standard room didn't have much space in the main area. The TV was mounted high on the wall and it was necessary to crane the head to see it. The channels were all spanish speaking. The bathroom was large and contained two rooms. In the smaller room was a toilet and the shower. In the larger room was the vanity sink and full-sized bathtub. The hotel had a decent fitness room and quaint restaurant with outdoor seating. The pool was small but clean. The staff was very helpful. High-speed internet access was available in the rooms for free (20 minute limit per day)and it was available in the lobby for a U.S. dollar per 20 minutes. The neighboorhood wasn't bad but several bad neighborhoods are in the vicinity. A hotel safe is provided in the room. The floors are all tile. A hairdryer is provided in the bathroom and a ceiling fan is located above the bed. There is ample dresser and hanging space for clothes.

Always take the red taxi service and either tell them to start the meter or negotiate prior to leaving.
