Try to arrange not to have to drive in San Jose, it is a very frustrating city to drive in as a tourist.

Loved the charm!

If you want American, don't go here. If you want charm, great service, good Costa Rican food and a pool - this place is great. It reminds me a bit of Charleston (SC) older homes. I can't say enough about the terrific staff. You don't need air conditioning - even in the rainy season. The area is safe during the day. Being a single traveler, I didn't leave at night unless my taxi driver took me somewhere. Back to the rooms - I would add new shower heads but everything considered, I would happily stay there again.

Great hotel for budget & luxury combined

Hotel santa tomas is a very small, intimate hotel with few staff and homely rooms. They have an excellent kitchen and breakfast is included in your stay (a plus!). They have a nice little pool and jacuzzi with waterside great for kids and adults alike. With it's downtown location, hotel Santa Tomas is a great place to stay and enjoy all that san Jose has to offer!

I would not recommend taking a cab from the international airport, this proved to be very expensive (45+ dollars), and you can take a bus right from the airport for less then $1 per person, baggage included.

Great small hotel with excellent service

The gentleman at the front desk new everything about San Jose and Costa Rica. He arranged personalized taxi service for us, and even at a lower than standard taxi metered rate! The pool and jacuzzi were well maintained and I was surprised by the mosaic tiled water slide. The complementary breakfast was the same everyday, so if you tire easily of eggs, toast and rice/beans you may want to explore local restaurants. San Jose was way more crowded and run down than I anticipated so be ready for the feel of a third world country, but the hotel was very well maintained and updated with large, wall mounted flat screen tv's and spacious tiled showers that flowed copious amounts of gallons per minute.

The all day Tortuga Island trip we took was the best. The two plus hour bus ride (each way) was air conditioned, the 1.5 hour (each way) boat ride had all the fresh tropical fruit you could eat, and the snorkeling on the island was amazing. Just be aware that alcohol is not included, so if you like to drink be prepared.

Lost out on this reservation!

We arrived at 11:00 pm and found the area seedy - shacks across the street and hookers all over the area. Parking area didn't look secure and person manning the desk just smirked at our reaction. We left and went elsewhere! Pictures online very deceiving but can't speak for the hotel interior.
