Lights off

The hotel was locked when we got there due to the neighborhood it is located in. The rooms were musty and the floor did not seem stable. The bathroom had windows offering no privacy. The hotel was loud. It had potential of being very cute with a clean up job and minus the street workers outside. Had to pay for parking which was not disclosed prior.

the worst

I have never before written a review of a hotel after a trip but I feel compelled to do so now. The Santo Tomas was easily the absolute worst hotel I have ever stayed in. From top to bottom it was terrible: it is located in a ghetto, the prostitutes lined up every night on the corner and we were told not to walk down the surrounding streets, the staff was ill-equipped and unhelpful, we were refused extra towels, told to hail our own cabs at night when leaving the hotel and told that there was no internet access while clearly there was a computer in the lobby. The room itself had an unusual odor and the walls were very thin, one could hear everything occurring in the surroundin rooms. Any potential visitor should do themselves a huge favor and pass on this one-star hotel. And I almost forgot: the food was horrendous as well.

Lost out on this reservation!

We arrived at 11:00 pm and found the area seedy - shacks across the street and hookers all over the area. Parking area didn't look secure and person manning the desk just smirked at our reaction. We left and went elsewhere! Pictures online very deceiving but can't speak for the hotel interior.

Hotel OK, but would not refund my money

Hotel was OK but wouldn't refund my money when I wanted to cancel reservation in days in advance. I had changed my mind about going into San Jose but since I couldn't get a refund I had to go anyway.

The good and bad

It was OK/good for the money. We did get the basic room but the remote didn't work and they could not fix it pretty much just said deal with it. The drain went down super slow in the shower,we were there 1 nite and was later in the eve when we discovered it so didn't even mention it. The hotel was clean, had a nice workout room, and pool.

Ok but nothing to write home about

Got in late at night from airport and a little surprised that fellow at desk did not even try to help my daughter with her bag. Also, the towels were dirty (one had hair on it which really grossed out my kid). On the positive side, the breakfast was good (rice beans huevos fruit) and the dinner was a great deal (about 5 bucks for a real good Cosado plate of rice beans pollo or fish, plantains, salad). Some of the staff were friendly. The neighborhood wasn't great but it was located just blocks from the central market which is good. Ok if you don't want to spend a lot of $$.
