Decent hotel but bad location
The hotel was decent, the restaurant was good. Specially the breakfast was really good. The staff was very polite and friendly. I also got a free complimentary drink coupon. The round trip shuttle service to airport is very convenient. Please be aware that the shuttle service is not through hotel. Its through Gray line. And the shuttle might not even have any logo or identification. There would be a person with your name sign waiting for you at the airport for pickup. The only problem with this hotel is the location. The neighborhood was pretty bad. I was there only for a night and totally avoided stepping out of the hotel.

Very central to downtown, everything is within walking distance. Although the immediate area is a little tough it's only two blocks from aveneda central and the mercado central. The children's musem is within view (more than once I've seen fireworks from the hotel balcony0 and all the other museums are a walk away. The staff is excellent, the place is clean, pool crystal, free breakfast more than adequit. The shuttle is great but only goe to the Irazu location not to down town like it used to.

What a surprise.
The hotel was not horrible, but the place where is located is a high crime area. The staff was hepful with us but I met some unhappy customers. The room was clean but there is room for improvement like changing the sheets more often. The lady in the breakfast was the best thing of the whole experience.

Short drive from hotel
There are several choices in San Jose. There are peruvian, colombian, and local restaurans. Our cost per meal was around fifteen dollars per 2 people, and we were satisfied. Save money in taxis and learn how public transportation works. We saved 20 dollars by taking the bus to the airport instead of the taxi.

Best Western Downtown San Jose' Costa Rica
Excellent, comp breakfast is delicious, as in the menu for the rest of the day, most important of all is the airport limo that takes BW guests round trip for only $5 , a taxi is at least $30 each way plus tip, free international calls are such a luxury and savings, as is the comp internet. They have a lovely pool but it was too cold for comfort and not only me but other guests who were there also when I was. The sad thing here is that this area of the city has become dangerous and run down, no one should walk around at all even though it is only a few blocks from the city center. A $2 taxi safely gets you downtown but it's just awful that this great hotel is located where it is . There is a bus stop across the street so if you don't look like a foreign tourist, you are ok on that during the day only. I loved the hotel, he staff and manager are wonderful, make you feel like family, and the cooks for the restaurant are excellent, but prices are reasonable. I was very happy with this hotel and Orbitz for booking it for me at a good discount. Thanks, Orbitz.

Book tours inside the hotel, or have them make your tour reservations. I lived in SJO for almost a year and there is no comparison to the wonderful tour companies they have.

The room was nice and clean, and quite despite reports I heard that this side of the building was noisy. The wake up call was 15 minutes late, and the breakfast supplies that were promised the night before for our early (5 am) writing were not available. Bad area of town, which required several blocks of walking not advisable alone late at night, but in the daytime no problem.

Do you shopping in daylight hours, or take a taxi at night. Taxi drivers have a bad reputation on honesty.

Great price
Cheap hotel in a not so great area but they have security guard there 24 hours a day. They have a grey line tours table where you can buy rafting tours and tours all around the country that pick you up right at the hotel. They offer free wifi but only in the lobby and restaurant area.

I did not know about the "Location" concerns until I got there. This hotel is located in Completely shady area. You MUST not leave your hotel without taxi, forget about walking around the streets. Our tour operators and the people sharing the tours informed us that it was the most dangerous area to live in specially at night. I booked the hotel thinking it is in downtown and near from Museums, but trust me I would not stay here again at any cost. Once you are inside the hotel it feels safe, but the rooms are not in good condition, the bathrooms are terrible. It definitely needs updates. The staff was good and breakfast was also good. But the location is seriously shady. Please pay some extra money and stay somewhere else.

Not for the faint of heart
The hotel was clean and nice. The food was so so. You do not want to leave at night unless you are in a large group or have a machete. Th homeless, mentally ill, alcoholics, and drug addicts abound in the area south of the hotel. It is better a block or two to the north. police presence is huge from 3P.M. to 6 P.M.

Not a Family Location
We stayed here because of closeness to the center of the city and the free airport shuttle. The location is as advertised, "steps" from the city center. However, between the hotel and the city center is possibly the worst part of the city. We are seasoned travelers, so we have seen it all. We tried two routes to the hotel and both times felt uncomfortable and concerned for our little daughter. On the plus side, the staff were all very polite and friendly. The shuttle service was punctual and safe. The rooms are old and quite "used". You won't pay much for a room here. Don't expect much.

Don't buy T-shirts at the tourist locations. Go to the lower end of the Avenida Central and go in some of the clothing stores. They have Costa Rica t-shirts at 60% of the price you pay at the tourist kiosks.
