comfortable

The room was a surprise...comfortable bed, clean sheets, fluffy white pillows. Cool shower, spa like bathroom. I definitely had a good nights rest. No mini fridge but no clock/alarm clock in the room either. Called for a wake up call at 7:15 did not get the call until 8:00. Make sure your cell phone is charged. Otherwise very nice place

Beacon has lost that charm, AVOID!!!!

I have stayed at the Hotel Beacon a number of times over the last 4 years. When I first started coming here it was a hidden gem with top notch service, friendly staff, great amenities, and in a convenient location that was close to my family in Escazu and away from San Jose. However, on my return visits in December 2013 it is clear that both the clientele that frequent the hotel, the staff, and the maintenance of the hotel has been allowed to degrade. I am not expecting the ritz here, I go to Costa Rica once a year to visit my family there and have been doing so for over a decade. So, I know what to reasonably expect. However major misses include: - Non-Functional HVAC units in the rooms - Spotty cleanliness with Made Service on Sheets - Ceiling Tiles that should have been replaced a year ago due to the humidity in the client (bent, buckled, stained) - Unfriendly Staff, that is clearly burnt out by the steady stream of very demanding "Ugly Americans" that are frequenting the hotel to take advantage of the new Medical Care Tour trade. This translates into rude service, pushing of upsetting of waters and other beverages that are not needed and praying on the perception of your ignorance about the real status of food/water safety in Costa Rica (hint, its safe to drink the water) - The hotel has become VERY popular with Americans that are coming to the area for Medical Treatment. This has created a situation where these guests are basically living in their rooms and running the joint. Making the this formerly quiet hotel, very loud and noisy. Not relaxing at all for a guest that just flew 14 hours to get to the country. - Security posted in the parking garage before is now absent 90% of the time and the locked gate that used to protect your car is now left open. - Food quality of the restaurant (which was just OK before) is now terrible. There a tons of options for food in Escazu, but on those days when you just got in to the area and are tired...you shouldn't have to guess whether the food will be good. After coming to the Beacon for many years, I am sad to say I will NOT return here again. With another trip to CR in 5 months on the books to visit my family, I will be looking at accommodations over in neighboring Santa Ana instead.

Beautiful hotel

The Beacon is a beautiful boutique hotel with very helpful staff, especially Leo, the concierge. I found the hotel to be an excellent value. Escazu is a small town compared to San Jose; the center doesn't have much to offer, a motorcycle/car or taxi are required to get places, but it's safe even at night (it feels much safer than downtown San Jose); regardless of what others may say here, the neighborhood is charming and you won't have any problems with crime here. The building is open air, which is fantastic, although the street noise is noticeable (but not intolerable - the traffic is not heavy like San Jose), and conversation from the bar and restaurant carry - but again, it's not intolerably loud. The only criticisms I have is there are no small refrigerators (std. deluxe room) as with higher end hotels, but if you can live without one, that should not be a problem; and the restaurant, while quite good, was overpriced although this seems common among hotel restaurants. On the plus side, huge, lux tiled showers and bath were fantastic. Bottom line: very nice place at a very reasonable price.

Awesome hotel in a horrible location

This hotel, as many businesses in Costa Rica, does not have an actual address. We had a hard time finding The Beacon even with our GPS because in order to get directions to the hotel (from the rental car agency) we needed an address but there is none. All that was given to us was that the hotel is about 200 meters from the Central Park. Well, even if we did have an address, it probably would not help us because there are no street names anywhere. The locals navigate by the town's prominent fixtures like a park or a big tree or a school. Secondly, the hotel is located in a very poor neighborhood. The high level of architecture and design does not fit the environment. We felt safe inside the hotel but not around it. The design and comfort of the rooms were outstanding. The front desk and restaurant service were ok, we were not impressed. Overall, I think I would come back to this hotel since I know what to expect.

Great Find - Better than Expected

You never really know what to expect when booking online for a place you've never visited. We stayed at Beacon Escazu the night before departing Costa Rica so we didn't have a long trek to the airport the day of departure. This place was WAY better than expected or outlined in the photos. When driving through the town of Escazu to find the hotel location the surrounding neighborhood had us wondering what we got ourselves into. But this hotel was the jewel of the town and there were plenty of signs on the street to get us there. When we arrived we marveled at the huge juxtaposition - a hotel with elegance vs. the surrounding neighborhood. Staff was very personable and helpful. This hotel is only about 2-3 years old and meets USA 4star criteria. The pool and spa, while small are nicely placed within a garden, the beds were lush. There is a small gym, steam room, sauna and roof top space all included. The restaurant serves $$$ meals but they are works of art. We must have been visiting in the off season because I reserved two rooms and our family only saw one other couple while staying there. It was like we were the only one's on site and the staff made us very comfortable. A bit of a drive to the airport the next day (30 minutes) but definitely worth the visit and we will return next trip. I underestimated the hotel before arrival because I believe the description and previous reviews had me thinking along the lines of lower expectations. I was very impressed. Hope your stay is as enjoyable - Cheers.
