Average hotel.

Stayed two nights. Arrived late Thursday. I was given a room on the first floor along the street. There were 10 rooms along the hallway. All empty on both sides. The reason I bring this up is because at 6:30am I was awakened and continued to be bothered by motorcycles, trucks, and car alarms. They could have placed me on the other side of the hall in the same room. I know that they were the same rooms because the next day early there was a man installing flat screen TV's in all the rooms in that hallway. The buffet breakfast was great. Service very good. The location is good, right near to Sabana park and the stadium. Room service and minibar are overpriced.

Just OK, typical 3 star quality

We stayed one short night. It's a decent hotel but I wouldn't be likely to stay here again. The location is good, you can walk to the Hertz rental car, Art Museum, and the park. There's a fantastic Soda very nearby as well. There's a free shuttle to/from the airport at scheduled times which will save you $25 USD each way by taxi. However, we had a rental on the way in so it took us quite a while to find the place for a couple reasons; the map on the website did not accurately reflect the location of the hotel and there is a lack of street signage, which is typical of CR. The street signs are on the corner buildings, as in Europe, however, the existence of such signage is inconsistent at best. Additionally, there are no actual building address numbers, instead the address is something like, "200 meters from ", etc. If you're taking a taxi, you're golden but if you are navigating via rental car, make sure you stop and ask where it is or you'll be wandering around the one-way city streets a while. The hotel itself is just decent. We requested a non-smoking room but the first room they tried to give us absolutely reeked of stale smoke. They quickly remedied and gave us a different room, however, when we called to ask about wifi, the desk guy hung up on us because he couldn't understand what we were asking. I went down to the desk and he was very nice and apologetic but all in all, I would say it was equivalent to an American 2.5 or 3 star hotel. Also, there is a free buffet which we didn't have a chance to try out due to our early flight but they had some pastries and fruit at the front desk set up for the early shuttle people, so that was nice.

Awesome Soda diagonally across the street from the museum. Can't remember the name but you can't miss it - 50's diner style, huge variety (awesome tamales) of food and desserts, service is excellent, and price is good.

Barcelo Palma Real

Hotel clientele were not always allowed in the restaurant area for dining. This area was sometimes rented out for other functions. I have mixed feelings about this and probably won't stay there again.

Expectedly Disappointed

I booked very last minute (within 24 hours) which may be the problem. I checked in very late (11PM) due to an unexpected flight change from a blizzard back in NYC. I just needed a place to stay overnight to catch a small flight to Quepos. I felt like and probably did get the last available room. Lights didn't work and things were broken in the room. It was manageable for only that night (8 hours) that I stayed there. I wanted to take a shower but the lack of lighting and appearance of things not being up to par lead me to go straight to bed and plan to shower at the next hotel I was transferring to. I got a free cocktail at the desk which I needed when I got to the room. I couldn't wait to get out of there and thankfully did at 6am. Everyone staff-wise was incredibly nice. I wonder if the experience would have been different if I booked and checked in earlier. I don't know if that would have made a difference I had heard decent reviews. I wouldn't stay here again. I hear the Marriott is close to the airport and a very nice place to stay in.

OK hotel, lousy service

We traveled to San Jose for the night to fly into the interior of Costa Rica the next day. We had been promised a car would pick us up, but it wasn't there when we arrived. We were forced to arrange our own transport in the middle of the night after a long day of traveling from the Midwest. Also, the hotel was unwilling to book a normal taxi for our use to return to the airport, instead, they wanted to book different transportation. This didn't make us feel confident about the hotel service. The physical facilities were great, although the neighborhood left a lot to be desired. Overall, next time we will book a hotel that is near the airport and available by shuttle.
