stay away

If this is a four star hotel, which is posted on their website and what cheaptickects told us too, I hate to see a one star hotel. Do not beleive the pictures on their website! It is currently under renovation and they start the drilling and banging at 8:00 am! Wait until renovations are complete to stay here!!!

Two stars is too generous

Lower your expectations and get ready to be surprised by 'extra' charges on the most basic needs. "Free" internet means in the lobby only; if you want it in your room it's gonna cost ya! Don't count on being able to use your pre-paid calling cards through hotel phones to save dough. Higher fares for hotel contracted cars; use the red city Taxis and watch the meters. The working staff were delightful and helpful, and I tipped generousely. The front desk staff were understandably defensive, and seemed resentful when asked to resolve issues. Water went off the first night, hot water missing the next morning, previousely damaged bed broke requiring a change of rooms, etc. Guards at every entrance kept the interior safe, but only the brave or foolish walk around downtown after dark. On checkout the desk refused, REFUSED, to give me a copy of the charges for the stay. Waiting to see if I'll have a problem with unauthorized additional charges.

Risky

We stayed at the hotel two night at the beginning of the trip and one more before leaving Costa Rica. On the first and last day there were no hot water until the morning of the next day. We called the desk and were told this problem is effecting the entire hotel. The Hotel is clean and centrally located but you would be surprised how a lack of a shower can ruin your day. Tip: Find another option in the area.

So So

The hotel is in downtown San Jose. Much of downtown San Jose is VERY seedy and sketchy. Was very impressed with the level of security provided by the hotel. The restaurant attached to the hotel was very acceptable. The rooms were clean, but small and dingy. Had an interior room which activated my claustrophobia. Towels were clean, but gray. Had to ask for a washcloth. Was charged $1.50 usd for consuming the in-room coffee that was provided.VERY poor lighting...unable to read in bed. Wonderful, friendly, helpful staff.

dated, bad location, good staff & food

Hotel very dated and in bad location. Noisy outside all the time. First room (standard) awful in appearance, but clean. Too small. Asked for upgrade to superior $19 more per day and well worth it again very clean. Staff could not be nice enough..wanted to do whatever to make things better and food in hotel was very good. We would not stay in San Jose ever again...only on the outskirts. Went to look at property for 2nd home and all builders hated driving into the city.

Nice Hotel in Central Location

The hotel was pretty nice for San Jose, and it is really close to the heart of the city. The first floor is really nice, but the rooms could never compete on an international level. Bathroom was extremely outdated. That said, it's not bad for the money where you are.

Dining tip: In Hotel

If you eat at the attached restaurant, don't trust the servers. I was told tip was not included in the bill, when 10 percent always is. Mediocre service and deception should not equate to a 28 percent tip.

The location was the most outstanding thing about this hotel.

The breakfast was good. The food in the hotel restaurant was expensive, the quality was average. Although the location was great, (it's right on the pedestrian walkway downtown) the street noise was unbelieveable. The staff weren't very helpful when we asked for a taxi they directed us outside to the nearest corner with all our luggage.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you go to this hotel don't eat in their restaurant. You can get much better food for 1/2 the price at most of the restaurants along the street & for really tasty, fresh food for lunch go to the Central Market.

Gran Hotel Costa Rica Stay

Upon our arrival no rooms were available because part of the hotel was undergoing reconstruction. We were transferred to the Gran Hotel Costa Rica and spent the night in a very small non-airconditioned room. The Balmoral staff promised us a room upgrade upon our arrival on August 5th.
