Bamoral a Hit
A three-star hotel to which I gave a four-star rating because of it location, wonderful staff, dedication security, and cleanliness. I chose the Balmoral over some four-star hotels and was not disappointed. The Balmoral is centrally located on a major pedestrian mall, near all the main parks and tourist sites of the city. The parks and mall where bustling with holiday activity during the month of December, when I visited. This was an excellent buy for a three-star hotel. I will stay there again in March when I return on another business trip..

The "Argentine restaurant", whose exact name I forget, but which had "Buenos Aires" in the title, was absolutely fabulous. Many of the natives that I spoke with consider it the best restaurant in the city. A small, unpretentious place, it had plenty of atmosphere (photos of Argentine movie idols, athletes, politicians from the past; tango and other Argentine musing playing in the background.) The staff was very well-trained and attentive to the most minute details. The steak dinner I had was comparable, if not superior to, ones I have had the top steak houses in the USA (e.g., Morton's, Cameron Mitchell), at which I would have paid more than twice the price.

Located in downtown central San
Located in downtown central San Jose. Very good breakfast. If you arrive before 2pm they will make you wait for your room. Great security and very friendly. Gave me a free room upgrade which was a nice suprise. Quiet at night in the halls. The only drawback was getting an iron up to my room - took 45 minutes but all in all a safe, secure, clean location. Very nice bar and resturaunt too.

If this is a four star hotel, which is posted on their website and what cheaptickects told us too, I hate to see a one star hotel. Do not beleive the pictures on their website! It is currently under renovation and they start the drilling and banging at 8:00 am! Wait until renovations are complete to stay here!!!

Superb Service!
We had reserved a standard room, but the reservation staff put us in the Presidential Suite because on 7/21/10 our room was not available and we had to transfer to the Gran Hotel Costa Rica. The upgrade was to compensate us for the inconvenience on 7/21.

Gran Hotel Costa Rica Stay
Upon our arrival no rooms were available because part of the hotel was undergoing reconstruction. We were transferred to the Gran Hotel Costa Rica and spent the night in a very small non-airconditioned room. The Balmoral staff promised us a room upgrade upon our arrival on August 5th.

Adequate and good location
Great location but food very overpriced, complimentary breakfast with very slim pickings. Innundated with local hawksters anytime you are within 50 feet of the hotel, but the people are generally very enjoyable, polite.

obvilusly stay away from the tourist traps, and go to the local markets and flea markets, if you do so select your cab driver very carefully (take pains not to get one who will over price you).

Don't judge by the outside
When the taxi pulled up to the hotel I thought what have I got myself into. The hotel fronts a pedestrian mall and looks shady, once inside it was clean and comfortable. Great breakfast buffet. I stayed two different times the first time was the front portion with a huge room, the second tome was the rear of the building which had a smaller darker room with a huge bathroom. Could not use the in room refrigerator (locked). Overall I was satisfied considering there is not much in central San Jose.

Across the street is a very good American style restaurant "News Cafe". Very reasonable a excellent menu, especially the salads and sandwiches. Great change of pace from the Tico fare or fast food.

Unbeatable location for the price
The superior room was great. Last stay we had a standard room that had not been updated, and no balcony or view. Superior room had a balcony overlooking the central ave. pedestrian walkway. Shops, casino, eating establishments & city highlights all within walking or short taxi ride distance. Bedding was high end and very comfortable. Best breakfast in town! Included everyday. Restaurant and bar are great ... no need to go anywhere else to have a good meal. We are seniors, and every accommodation was made to assist my husband's infirmity.

Nice hotel
My mother and I always stay in this hotel when we travel to Costa Rica. The location is perfect since it is in the very downtown. The food at El Patio Restaurant is excellent. However, what we like most is the friendly staff of the hotel. They are all very educated and professional people who makes us feel like if we were at home.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
There are two markets near the hotel in which you can buy water and snacks if you do not want to spend money consuming what they offer in the small frigie at your room. You can also buy a prepaid phonecard nearby if you do not want to be charged for telephone calls.
