5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014 My friend and I stayed at Blue River for a week in August 2014. The grounds were tropical and absolutely beautiful. The butterflies (especially the morpho-blues) and hummingbirds give the resort a magical quality!!! The Costa Rican people have a beautiful spirit and the staff went out of the way to make sure we were happy and comfortable without the phony subservience that you find at a 5 star high class resort. Hola and Gracias to Gilbert, Jonathan and Roberto- the restaurant staff who took good care of us!! I'm sorry I forgot the name of the salonero with the curly hair :( I highly recommend the "refrescos" with water or milk. The staff will make special combinations for you. I requested Guayabana & mango w/milk and mango, papaya and pineapple with water. Roberto is the refrescos expert. I miss my refrescos already.... One of the owners, Daniel was very friendly and socialized with us on a few occasions. He told us how Blue River came to be and it was great to hear the history of the resort. The mosquitos are more ferocious than the animals in Costa Rica so whether it's natural or OFF make sure you bring repellant!!! You will need it in the resort- it is a rainforest!!! My friend lived doused in Calamine lotion for the week :( I did the ziplining and water tubing which was a great experience!! Kevin and Ronald took great care of me and they make sure you are safe! If it's your first time ziplining, go on a sunny day because the rain makes the lines slick & fast. If you go water tubing, it's a class 3 with rocks so you will get a little banged up if it's your first time. Heed my advice- Lift your butt while in the tube!!! My only caution are the roads leading to the resort. I am more daring that most so I took the 4 x 4 Suzuki and drove the 12 mile (20KM) dirt/rock road 4 times. I have driven dirt roads in the US & Puerto Rico but nothing compared to this. They are hilly mountain roads made of dirt and rock so it's a bouncy jeep ride with small one lane bridges the whole way. And even I wouldn't do it at night. The resort is relatively new so most likely in time the roads will get better. They were going to be smoothed out a week or two after we left :) It took me an hour to do the road the first time but I had it down to 40 minutes by the end of the week. Be aware that it takes time to get anywhere else due to the unpaved road and there's nothing in the area. Just a small bodega and a souvenir shop. I have to admit though, driving an automatic on a beautifully paved road seemed boring after returning from Costa Rica :)) I recommend going to Bahia Junquillal Beach & Wildlife Refuge. It's 1 1/2 hours from the resort and they do a tour if you prefer a guide. Its a quiet beach which you might get almost to yourself. On the property we saw capuccin monkeys, iguanas, coatimundi and watusa. If you wander into the mangroves, you may see crocodiles also. If you want an authentic, relaxing but adventurous remote vacation with no cell phone service and a desire to return to a simpler time and life, this is the place for you!! I don't regret a moment of it...

    Off the beaten path

Front desk staff was great! Watched the end of the World cup football game in the office.CR WINS! Wait staff not very friendly. They should be selling the hotel amenities and talking to guests. (Did you go tubing or horseback riding? You should go here...) Hotel is in the middle of nowhere so come prepared. Rooms are big and clean. Sauna was nice but could use a face lift. Mud bath was an experience. Overall a good stay.

Great secluded location but menus had pricing errors

The ride to the hotel was $100-110 and almost two hours away. Leaving, you will pay $100-110 also. If you would like to leave the resort, it will cost you more money for transportation. The staff was great with assisting in activity planning and recommending places. When we ordered food, the waiter got a few orders wrong and the menu prices were different. The manager only half way honored one of the mistakes. I would recommend paying in Costa Rica's currency. We did get to walk off the resort with a nice escort to the local store & gift shop. The people are very friendly at the local shops. As for ammenties, i recommend horseback riding and ziplining for the whole family. The muddbath is located outdoors and you apply it yourself from a muddstand (stand with a pot of mudd?). Fyi, the mudd smells and its hard to remove the odor. The natural sauna and natural springs are great. Sometimes the water looks dirty but, for the most part it was ok after it was cleaned. Although the sauna looks a little weird, it works wonders.

Tranquil luxury at a reasonable price

Sorry I only had 2 days here but as it was my second visit I knew what to expect and was not disappointed. The remote location, on volcanic slopes, has been turned into a self-contained luxury resort with multiple hot spring baths and butterflies, humming birds and exotic plants aplenty. Don't come here looking for night life - unless it is lying in hot water watching a tropical starry sky.

    Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

It is expensive to use the hotel's own shuttle service as the distances are considerable. However if you hire your own car make it a 4x4 and be prepared for some very rough driving. If you haven't driven on loose rocks in hilly country - take the shuttle.

Nice grounds but a hassle to get to

Nice gardens, nice pool with slide, hot springs and botanical gardens with some hummingbirds are worth the visit. Blue river can be seen on the way. But 21.5 KM of unpaved road takes 50min-1hr to drive through. That's after driving over 30 min from Liberia airport area. Sure the area is scenic, but who can focus on that while the whole time you're trying to make sure you don't get a busted tire! Not particularly welcoming staff or restaurant wait staff. Worth seeing once, maybe if you're ok with limited dining options and also doing some tours. But definitely not worth the hassle for just a day trip.

Great Place, worth the "rough" drive!

A great setting at the edge of the volcano. Extremely isolated with 20 KM on an unpaved road...

Resort worth 1 maybe 2 days tops

We got to the hotel which is very beautiful! But it is a long 25 Kms drive, takes you an hour to get there! Staff are top notch but owner should stay in the back ground! Your customers come first not the owner! The grounds are breath taking!

    would stay again!

The room was amazing! The views stunning! I did not mind the long unpaved road because the scenery was spectacular. We did two different excursions while staying with Blue River. The first was the white water rafting and I can't express how fantastic the guides were and I would highly reccommend this excursion, our kids are 12 and 14 and they both loved it. The second excursion was the rafting, it was fun too but the river just a little shallow because of the dry season but still had a good time. The ladies at the front desk of Blue River have a difficult time understanding any concerns and were not always very helpful. They were polite but could not understand a simple question or request. The food for breakfast and dinner was good. We tried many different menu items and everything was good. The gentlemen(waiter ) in the restaurant was very friendly and helpful. We had an air condintioning problem and the maintance manager was more than helpful. The unit was leaking and unfortunately ruined my daughters ipod charger and they gave us a credit for the amount of the charger. The grounds were beautiful and it was an amazing experience.

    Great place!

The room was VERY large, great balcony w/hammock, large bathroom/shower and closet, safe in the room but felt very safe at this location and did not feel we needed to use the safe. The grounds were beautiful and the hot spring pools amazing! Mud bath included in your room rate and it feels great and refreshing. Butterfly garden, orchid and humming bird walk were beautiful! There is only one restaurant/bar and make sure if you arrive late you have snacks, drinks and water because the restaurant bar closes early. The roads are a bit rough getting to this location and highly recommend 4-whl drive. You can make it in a car but it would take a really long time and I can imagine would be very rough. Other than the resort, there is not much around in the way of restaurants, shops or bars....pretty much nothing else. So after a few nights we were a little tired of the same restaurant for every meal but they do offer a great selection and the food was tasty. The staff were very friendly especially in the restaurant/bar and the resort offered many different tours such as zip line, horses and hikes. This resort was very family/couples oriented and would not recommend for singles looking to party. We had a great time relaxing at this resort and would highly recommend it to others!

    Peace

After a rough trip (lost taxi driver), stepping into our cabana was blissful. Suddenly, we were surrounded by lush landscaping, birds chirping and frogs croaking. Every cabin has a hammock on the porch along with 2 rocking chairs. The hot spring pools were delightful and so were the staff. Greta in reception and Victor in the restaurant were stand-outs. We met one of the owners Kevin during our stay and he appreciated our input and told us about their future plans. Overall we spent 3 nights there and revitalized ourselves immensely. The restaurant food was delicious and considering that you pretty much have to eat there, the prices were not over-priced but rather in an Applebee's price range. Just don't leave anything at home, it is a long trip to town.
