Misleading
If you stay at the hotel, be warned. It seems as though the only reason this place has a 4 star rating is due to the villas... the actual hotel is more like a 2.5. Very disappointing. The food was inferior as well. My husband and I had read other reviews praising the cuisine. I'm not sure if the menu changed since then? I suppose it's wonderful food if you enjoy rice, beans, and plantains for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. The resort is also a distance from the beach. You must take a shuttle bus to the public beach that is filled with vendors. The resort also offers no night life. Period. We would definitely stay elsewhere if we ever return to Costa Rica.

Great Time....would return
Pro: I was hesitant to go to the hotel after some of the negative reviews. Now I am really happy I went. You have to make the best of it. All the workers to the hotel staff, waiters and bartenders are all awesome. As soon as you check in as for a 3rd floor hotel room. It has the best views. You have to remember your in a third world country for the most part the food was pretty good and any special request they would accommodate. Be careful when they try to have you sit through 90 minute presentation. We went through the Costa Rica tour which has a signup desk right near check in. The tours I recommend are 1/2 day canopy which you do 11 different zip lines. Nicaragua tour through costa rica tour group was very long but well worth the trip. If you try to go their yourself it is a nightmare but [...]the tour guide was great. The night life is quite, I recommend to drive to Playa Coco there are several bars and cultural restaurants if you want a night out from the hotel. It is about a 15 minute drive. At playa coco there is a bar called beach bums that does a great snorkeling and sunset cruise right from their beach from 1pm-6pm. We rented a car and took a day trip to tamarindo. It's about a 1 1/2 drive but great surfing town and you can take surfing lessons pretty cheap. The drive down is beautiful. Driving in costa rica is totally safe and people tend to say to themselves and not bother you.Cons: We were two single girls the resort is more of couples and families. We were fine because we could go to to Coco at night. Avoid a guy name John with braces. He promised us a $100 off a excursion if we attended the presentation and since we were not 30 years old he was not able to give us the deal but we still received 50% off the canopy tour. He is shady and a sneak. The pictures seem like the rooms are larger than they seam.

Fantastic resort!
Villas Sol is a wonderful resort. Its website does not do it justice. The views are breathtaking, and the amenities are unmatched for this price point. Although we did not travel with children, it is a family-friendly resort - but not frustrating to couples either. The food and drinks are good, not great, but it is all-inclusive so you don't mind. There is a wonderful restaurant right up the street called Ginger if you get tired of the dinners, and a sports bar as well if you want something casual (or to watch US sports). Both the CAT wildlife tour and the resort's sunset cruise are spectacular, but skip the CAT shopping tour- it was the low point of our trip. Also, be sure and book your transportation through Gray line- they are the best, and ask about pre-paying your exit taxes ($26 per person). You don't need to exchange your currency- everywhere takes US dollars and major credit cards. Overall, this is a beautiful, relaxing vacation that I would highly recommend!
