Great place, no shower or running water

The hotel is beautiful and so is the surrounding area. My low rating does not come from the beautiful hotel or the nice tour guides or the baggage assistant, but from reception, management, and the condition of my rooms. The original room we were booked at was infested with ants and bugs, and the water was not working at all. The pipes burst that night and the water did not work for our 3 day stay period. Because of the bugs and a few broken things in our initial room, a few hours after check in we moved to another room. This room was supposed to have running water, but it would've been like trying to shower with a water gun (literally) that worked when it wanted to. From the very beginning reception told us that the water problem would be fixed within an hour. I called after several hours and I received the same response. This cycled continued throughout our entire stay. It was so stressful. I get enough stress with work, I did not wish to be stressed on my vacation. My girlfriend and I were not able to shower or use the jacuzzi in our room (which is about an extra $80 a night) for the full time period. It has been 3 weeks since our stay. The manager assured that I would receive a refund for the jacuzzi not working and I had to argue about a refund for the water not working. It has all been such a hassle and I have actually yet to receive a refund period. I do not recommend staying here, there are very many affordable 4 and 5 star hotels all along the Arenal area that are much more beautiful and have much better service to offer.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Do not purchase food at the hotel restaurant. The average dish is about $30 and the food is not all that great. Some of the servers are very generous, others will just forget that you are even there.

I got robbed

unfortunately, we had a horrible experience. The AC and the safes were not working when we checked in. The staff brought a portable AC without proper drainage for the water condensation. The entire floor were full of water. When we left for diner on our first night, my sons' room was broken into, his electronics were stolen along with clothing and shoes. Sadly enough the hotel staffs were aware of the occurence and did not inform us until we discovered our belongings were missing. Were not helpful until we asked to file a report with the police. The front desk service is non-existence, called five different extensions no one ever picked up. None of our family member were able to reach us, because no one ever picked the phone. Their ground is beautiful, full of flowers, and humming birds. Sadly, the management was poor, and the robbery ruined our vacation.

Montana de Fuego, Arenal CR

Very nice private bungalow, rather large, with two queen beds, nice bathroom and shower. Semi enclosed deck had an excellent, unobstructed view of the Arenal volcano, which no longer erupts at night (the main reason we took the room) or at any other time. Staff member inventories the towels (they're big on that in CR) and everything else in the room, from the ashtray to the candleholder. Excellent, generous breakfast provided in the morning... but you have to wear a wristband! I'm all for security, but it's like you're in an amusement park - and rather uncomfortable to wear all the time (and shower with).

It was okay...

Pros: Free Wifi; Free computer access in the Library; THE MOST AMAZING ALL INCLUSIVE BREAKFAST BUFFET!!; The concierge booked our tickets at reduced cost for the Baldi hot springs; The front desk was delightful - Very friendly and accommodating!!! Cons: Rooms were old looking. Definitely needs that special something. Pool area was also not very nice. One of the pools was dirty with leaves and bugs floating in it. Pool staff would stare at us while we laid by the pool. It was sub-par.

Drive off the resort and eat somewhere else in the town. It's cheaper and makes you feel like a true Tico.

Paradise, but not perfect service

We waited 40 minutes after check-in time for the room to be ready. Clean towels were not replaced when room was cleaned. We reserved a the Bungalow-Junior Suite w/ Jacuzzi Volcano View room with 2 Queen Beds online but it only offered a King and uncomfortable pull out couch bed. No other rooms were offered/available after the issue was brought to the hotel's attention. Breakfast was tasty. Views are beautiful. Service was not as good as an average hotel's service. Shower/Jacuzzi does not curtains, therefore the bathroom was wet after showers. I give 3 stars because of the views, but I would give 2 for punctual service.

Amazing!!!!

We stayed in a junior suite. It is a beautiful and spacious room with 2 queen size beds and a jacuzzi. The room faced the volcano. What a beautiful view! The staff is very friendly and breakfast was amazing! The restaurant has a view of the volcano also. I totally recommend this hotel!

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

We recommend Lava Lounge. DO NOT go to La Brasitas. Super expensive. Totally a turist trap. We hiked without a guide and it was just fine. It was $10 to get in the trail up to the volcano. A local recommended Eco Termales Hot Springs instead of Baldi. We were very pleased to share the springs with few people. We were able to relax, take a nap as the place was very quiet. Reservations are highly recommended. Just so many people are allowed in. I heard that Baldi is noisy with music blasting all day.

Average at best

The poor receptionist was overwhelmed, so we spent an age in reception trying to get things done/resolve issues which there were many. We like hiking on our own, but all the hotel wants to do is sell you tours. It is difficult/expensive to get anywhere without a car. Rains all the time (warm rain) but clothes will never dry (even in the room).

Bath in the river near the hot springs (about 1.5 miles). This is where all the locals go and it is a really nice experiance.

Montaña de Fuego Hotel

We did many of the adventure tours (canyoning, rafting, ziplines, hiking, hot springs) when we were there. We were there in a down season, so there were very few people at the resort. The hotel was very accommodating to help point us in the right direction to our tours, excellent breakfast buffet, and a friendly staff. The grounds are very well-kept, and the resort offers a nice pool/wet bar and a full-service spa. Would absolutely recommend.
