Good view, bad look

The view of the volcano is great. However, the rooms and installations are old and non-functional. In the room, the TV is still of the old type, the refrigerator (minibar) was not working (at least no in my room), and the light in the room literally do not reach the floor. More importantly keep away from the restaurant. Nevertheless, If you go there, look at the menu and decide if you stay. Do not let the waitress to sell you the "specials" before you check the menu, and always ask for the prices. If you dont, you will end paying more than 40$ for a dish of pasta. On the other hand, they will tell you that the wine is for free, but at checking-out they are going to charge you for it. They are plenty of restaurants by the road (not at walking distances).

$250 a night I expected more!

First of all it's 3.5hrs away from the San Jose airport on extremely bumpy roads which American Express Travel did not inform us. When we got our room it was a dump! Stained sheets, soiled sofa and bathroom needed grouting! We called house keeping and they just came in and tucked in the top sheet! It took 45 minutes with them and a stack of sheets to go through to find clean ones! The hot tub was broken and the pool was under construction. Their are holes in the roof of the restaurant! I have photos of all of it. We were booked there 3 days and we called for a private car to drive us to Riu Palace which was another 3.5hrs on very bumpy roads. Montana de Fuego has still not refunded our money for the 2 nights!

Has potential to be better.

The location of this hotel is pretty good, right outside of town and in close proximity to the volcano. I am sure the volcano would have been breathtaking had the clouds and rain cleared up enough to see it, which i totally understand is beyond anyone's control. There were a few picky things that my wife and I noticed that could have taken this hotel up a notch and it was mostly the little details. The rooms were not quite as appealing as they are in the pictures, small things like paint over spray, or the hairdryer in the bathroom that had partially melted plastic on one end. With all the landscaping work that is done, and believe me the landscaping and the flowers everywhere are incredible as it is, things like exposed pipe in the small lakes on the property took away some of the magic. My advice here is to give some more attention to the small things and clean up the resort a bit more. Then I think anyone would find this place well worth the money spent. We stayed in one of the "lake" suites because we were on our honeymoon. My recommendation for that would be to put maybe a nice overhang (maybe retractable) over the porch so that while it is raining (all the time) you can sit out there and watch the rain with a glass of wine. One thing I did somewhat dislike about the view was the telephone and power lines in the way, but im sure that can not be helped. If those were gone, it would be a view worthy of a postcard for sure. My wife and I enjoyed the spa, we had a couples massage, chocolate mask and a glass of wine. Ask about any specials they might have because at first we were only shown the regular menu of Spa treatments, we were only told later about the specials. The restaurant was decent but far from the best food we had had on the trip. It was fairly expensive even for American standards. We had our dinner there once during our 2 night stay and had our breakfast included (so we ate there of course). All other meals were had in Fortuna, where we found a nice local place to grab some food. Well now im just rambling on. It was a fairly decent place which I am sure is probably maybe toward the upper middle range of places to stay in this area. I am thinking one of the Superior rooms, although with a slightly more restricted view, might have been the better deal. Pura Vida!

There are several places in town like Luigi's (pizza/pasta) that have more food for less Colones.

Expensive facilities

Considering the huge prperty the hotel covers, it is nomal that the prices are on th high-end. However, the services provided as well as the service receivd are just basic. You'd better off in considering something else. Be aware of the restaurant as the waiters always try to oversell the "special" of the night. Avoid the spa as it is badly managed and does no offer safe lockers. If you are interested in having a good view of the Arenal volcano, you can opt for something else.

Great view of Arenal.

This was our second trip to see the Volcan Arenal, and this time we got to see it! This hotel has a great view if you get an outside cabin near the road. Road noise wasn't an issue, the cabins were very spacious and staff very friendly. This restaurant was well stocked (although kinda pricey), and the location is close to the National Park. They offered numerous tours for horseback riding, hiking, canopy tours and basically anything you want to do in Costa Rica. We took the hike into the Park and got some great views of the top of the volcano. When we went 10 years ago all I could see was the base. You don't get close to the crater like at Volcan Irazu but it was cool anyway. We only stayed one night. The Spa was nice as well.

Great place, no shower or running water

The hotel is beautiful and so is the surrounding area. My low rating does not come from the beautiful hotel or the nice tour guides or the baggage assistant, but from reception, management, and the condition of my rooms. The original room we were booked at was infested with ants and bugs, and the water was not working at all. The pipes burst that night and the water did not work for our 3 day stay period. Because of the bugs and a few broken things in our initial room, a few hours after check in we moved to another room. This room was supposed to have running water, but it would've been like trying to shower with a water gun (literally) that worked when it wanted to. From the very beginning reception told us that the water problem would be fixed within an hour. I called after several hours and I received the same response. This cycled continued throughout our entire stay. It was so stressful. I get enough stress with work, I did not wish to be stressed on my vacation. My girlfriend and I were not able to shower or use the jacuzzi in our room (which is about an extra $80 a night) for the full time period. It has been 3 weeks since our stay. The manager assured that I would receive a refund for the jacuzzi not working and I had to argue about a refund for the water not working. It has all been such a hassle and I have actually yet to receive a refund period. I do not recommend staying here, there are very many affordable 4 and 5 star hotels all along the Arenal area that are much more beautiful and have much better service to offer.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Do not purchase food at the hotel restaurant. The average dish is about $30 and the food is not all that great. Some of the servers are very generous, others will just forget that you are even there.

I got robbed

unfortunately, we had a horrible experience. The AC and the safes were not working when we checked in. The staff brought a portable AC without proper drainage for the water condensation. The entire floor were full of water. When we left for diner on our first night, my sons' room was broken into, his electronics were stolen along with clothing and shoes. Sadly enough the hotel staffs were aware of the occurence and did not inform us until we discovered our belongings were missing. Were not helpful until we asked to file a report with the police. The front desk service is non-existence, called five different extensions no one ever picked up. None of our family member were able to reach us, because no one ever picked the phone. Their ground is beautiful, full of flowers, and humming birds. Sadly, the management was poor, and the robbery ruined our vacation.
