Pool Bar

Overall the staff was very friendly and I enjoyed my time in the resort. My only concern was that the pool by the bar had a bit of a urination smell, so needless to say I did not spend too much time near that pool area.

Allegro Papagayo - All Inclusive - The Truth about my 8 day stay

Me and my fiancée purchased a premium package with the resort. . I checked in and they gave me a room with double beds that was the first problem. The air conditioner didn't work at all. I called them and the next day they moved us to another part of property, which was the king size bed. The air conditioner was leaking all over the place and had to have them fix that. All they have to eat is buffet style food. The food is good thought. No pool side drink service which was awful. No gym!!! They only have one bar with one bartender, so get ready to wait in line for every drink with the cheapest liquor possible. Property is a little old and out of date. Bring your walking shoes because the property is like a campus style setting. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Looks like a haven for every Canadian!! They had a large group of Canadian kids there with a company called Vtrip so expect a lot of noise every day you are there. The beach was nice and quiet. I would seek other options for the price. definitely not worth it.

Average all inclusive getaway

The beach is black sand so the water can get very mucky, not very ideal to wade around in. The pool area however is very large and beautiful so it makes up for the lack of swimable beach area. They do offer a free boat service to a "white sand" beach which definitely is a better beach than the one at the resort. It's made of little rocks and shells though, and not sand. We went around 9:30am and were brought back at around 3:00pm despite being told we would be brought back at 1:30pm. Drinks are provided while there, and they have these horrible looking ham and cheese sandwiches they offer for lunch. So my advice to you would be to eat a big breakfast or to bring your own snack with you. Our room was great. I was worried after reading some negative reviews but we had a positive experience in building 5. Our towels were replaced daily and the air conditioning worked perfectly (I read reviews where this was not the case).

Reservations for the 2 restaurants on premise can only be made the same day and they book up fast. I would suggest making them at 8am right when guest services open.

good for the price !

the price was soo low , it was better then i expect. the beach is not nice but it is not the hotel fault. the staff was efficient and very nice. food was simple but we like it. we had a reservation at the italian restaurant and that was a great choice. the hotel room need an updathing but for the price we paid it was expecting. if you are looking for a nice beach you are at the wrong place but if you are on a budget. you will be happy.

Nice Weekend Retreat

The hotel overall was not bad, pool was great, drinks were good, beach was pleasant. The hotel staff was really helpful every time I needed something they helped. The Hills traveling back and forth was a big pain. The soap and shampoo in the bathroom stunk like garbage. I had my really expensive shorts stolen from my balcony. Would I stay there again. I guess I would...

Some good ... Mainly BAD!!!

First the good things ... the pool area is excellent for kids and the swim to bar adds a nice touch. The black sand beach is nice because it's from the volcanic activity that happens around the area. The beach across the bay isn't black. It's not mud as some have described, it's definitely different from any other beach you have been to because the black sand appears to have glitter as it reflects off the sunlight. The wild life is cool too. Plenty of iguanas, parrots, and occasional spider monkeys on the beach. Now the bad … if you have back problems the beds suck and woke up with back problems everyday. The TV is tiny. The workmanship inside is 2 star at best. They have Italian and Mexican resturaunts that you have to make reservations for so you don’t have to eat at the buffet, but the only way to get a reservation is to be there very early in the morning to make a reservation because only one resturaunt is open a night and book fast. Hanging out in the lobby, I noticed I wasn’t the only customer having problems. One person was having issues getting a room and another was robbed. After listening to all the complaints, we tried to transfer remaining funds to the Occidental Grand sister property across the bay however they wouldn’t accommodate us because they claim that it was completely sold out. However, they miraculously had cancelations after they were scubbed $100 (that’s how desperate we were to get out#. They wanted us to get 2 rooms and pay difference because we had kids however we only had 1 room at Allegro. The rate was over double than what we found on the internet #can you say price gouging). We then asked for a Jr Suite at the Grand for the same price of the 2 rooms which was granted but it was ok that we had the kids in the Jr Suite and didn’t have to get 2 rooms. They aren’t willing to work with you unless they get something in return. I would recommend you book elsewhere.

Don't buy snorkeling package tour if you have a car. Just drive to Playa Panama which is across the bay. We paid $35/person in a family of 5 when we could have just driven to the location and saved all that money.

Don't waste your money

1) Food sucks 2) Long lines to eat and get drinks 3) Under age drinking allowed. The pool area smells foul - Vomit from night partying. Mass tourism for high school seniors that want to get loaded. 4) Beach is black sand mud. Don't waste your money....

Get what you pay for, perhap a tad less.

1. Place is old, definitely needs renovation. 2. STEEP walk to pool, eating, beach though provide 10 minute interval vans. 3. Long drive to tours, expensive! Prices change daily! 4. Shower nothing but a dribble of water. 5. They shut your AC off daily when they clean the rooms. The last day they even shut the breakers down for the entire building! Luckily my husband was experienced enough to discover the problem & knew how to turn the one four our building back on. 6. While we were 2 people they left only 1 coffee cup & enough coffee for 2. 7. We were "nabbed" by a man claiming to be our concessionaire (sp?) but after 15 minutes we discovered was nothing but someone who wanted to put us on a tour the next day to sell units in one of their sister properties - not the best greeting after a long trip and just arriving. 8. 99% of the employees were very friendly and accommodating, great people! However as it was a all inclusive trip, including gratuities, we discovered tipping a few dollars brought us even more attention. 9. Jacuzzi never did work during a week long stay. 10. Beach was small, black sand where some was sandy and 1/2 black mud, maybe good for a mud spa? 11. Food good but not all 3 options (2 restaurants and buffet) open everyday, usually only 1 option.

If you're looking for a one stop place with everything included at a low price and don't mind a bit old and are in shape for steep walks you won't mind this place at a reasonable price.

Good Stuff

place was awesome... the staff was super friendly, and also the rooms were kept clean all the time and had a great working AC.... It is a bit tiering to keep climbing up the hill to get to the rooms since they are up hill but for the most part you get used to it and there is a shuttle there to pick you up every 10 min at a location...
