Amazing Hotel

This hotel exceeded all expectations. The staff were all genuinely friendly and helpful. They upgraded us to a suite at no cost (and I'm not even sure why). Our suite was gorgeous! The bath tub was like a little pool. The food at the hotel is also very good, but I will warn you that it's quite expensive. You can save a lot if you go into town to eat. The hot springs at this hotel are nothing short of paradise. They are waterfall hot springs surrounded by tropical vegetation. It's so peaceful and beautiful. I would definitely go back to this hotel and hot springs. I loved it!

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Go into La Fortuna to eat. Their small restaurants are called Sodas, and are some of the best food you'll find, and at very low prices. I recommed Soda Viquez, which is a block off the main street (right down the side street nearest the the big casa blanca sign on the main street). I'd also recommend going there during off season like October- hotels are cheaper and the place isn't overrun with other tourists.

Dream Come True!

Plenty of staff to assist, always friendly. Tour guide is on location, so you can book anytime (they are not cheap but Jacamar Tours is extremely professional and they will customize your trips). Hot Springs was the greatest feature - non guests have to pay a fee to enter. Note, the springs were located about a quarter mile down the road, but there is a bus that runs between the hotel & the springs. Food was pretty good but be prepared to pay; there is a food package that we weren't aware of - so I would recommend inquiring. There were minimal bugs but that's expected given the location. Ask about free upgrade (most likely available only during offseason June - November). Since its located at the base of Arenal Nat Park, its not close to town (shops/restaurants) and a taxi is $18 each way. We found food options to be limited. If this is an issue I would recommend staying elsewhere, but I felt the overall quality beat out the proximity to La Fortuna (town). I would definitely stay here again and recommend this resort to anyone visiting Costa Rica. Pura Vida!

Limited Options

We had a great time. The staff was wonderful. The hot springs were amazing. The spa was so incredible, I won't even try to describe it. Take advantage of excursions. You have to either hike a short ways along a fairly busy, narrow road outside the resort or ride in resort shuttle to get to the hotsprings. We enjoy that kind of thing, so it wasn't a problem, but I don't recommend cute flip flops for the walk. Also, I was surprised that there were no hiking trails you can venture on from the resort area. To eat, there is one nice, expensive restaurant available on property or walk/take shuttle to hotsprings area for casual, buffet restaurant which is $40/person after tax and service fee. There is a bar on the property as well as at the hot springs or at the upper portion of the hot springs (adult only Shangri-la# all with similar menu, ex. ham and cheese sandwich for $17. To get to the nearby town, La Fortuna, you must take a taxi #$36 roundtrip). There are lots of typical tourist type shops and restaurants there. Ate at Nene's and the food was fantastic. Very large portions, so may want to share entree if you start with an appetizer and salad...trust me. Don't get me wrong, the trip was great. The excursions were phenomenal. However, once you are back from those and have had enough of the hot springs there isn't much else to do. It is in the rain forest and we had rain all day. We did all the adventures in the rain and had a great time. However, with the rain, we couldn't really just sit outside and read a book. It's just different than I expected from a 5 star resort. Of note, after your shower, you will need to reapply bug spray to walk out of your room to go to the restaurant, to the bar, or to get a taxi to go to La Fortuna. All restaurants, bars, etc are open air, so don't try to get by without bug spray. It's not a negative, just an important thing to know.

Shopping tip: Not Applicable

If you go on an excursion (i.e. white water rafting) and they stop at a small place along the way to go to restroom. Purchase coffee at the shop. 1820 is the brand the locals say is the best and it is very cheap outside the tourist locations.

The distance from La Fortuna to Tabacon is about 15 min which taxis will typically charge $18 each way. We rented a car and saved a lot of money on what would have been spent on taxis.

Stay here for the most beautiful hot spring in Arenal

We stayed here for the unlimited access to the hot springs. After researching the various hot spring options in the Arenal area, it sounds like Tabacon offers the very few, if not only, natural hot springs. So half we didn't go with the party town at Baldi. When you stay at the hotel, you are able to enjoy the hot spring on the day you checked in and the day you checked out (up until 10pm). And we used it to the fullest. They do have showers there too in case if you need to freshen up after you checked out from your room. We came in early June so it was already the off season time. Most of the time, we were able to enjoy the springs almost privately. Do try and go during daylight and nighttime for completely different experience. The hotel rooms are clean and spacious. We didn't have much of a view but we barely stayed in. During the day we were out and about with our hiking and zip lining activities and went straight for the hot springs right after. They only allow valet parking which can be a bit of a hassle in my opinion. Definitely bring a lot of singles with you. All the workers will expect tips for everything they do for you. Also don't leave your swim suits or sneakers to dry outside. Maybe there are animals etc but the workers will also put them away and you have to ask the front desk to get them back. Overall a great value for both of us considering how much a two day admission to the springs would cost us.

Nice place, bad bartenders

I like this hotel. Very clean and comfortable. We ordered room service - quick and tasty. The mineral springs were the highlight. WE loved the water slide. Grounds are keep clean and feel extremely safe. All staff was extremely helpful and friendly except for the bar tenders. Not sure what was up with that. The one at the hotel was grumpy, didn't want to get us any drinks and was more interested in watching his computer screen. The ones at the pool / spa were a bit better and the ones at the Shangri-La were ok. Shangri-La was very relaxing and the place to be - an area for hotel guest only & no kids. Since the hotel is so far from town and anything food and drink prices were double what I would expect to pay. But the other option is to take the $20 cab ride into town. I would recommend staying here a night or two then move into town.
