Nice Hotel, perfect location

I stayed at the Garden Hotel Xian for over a week during my time in Xian. I was very happy with the hotel. Its staff was very friendly and helpful. Most had some English; with the people at the front desk having very strong English. But everyone always had a smile and a hello, even if they only spoke Mandarin. The stylized lake and garden in the middle of the hotel was lovely. The food in the restaurant was good. The location of the hotel was great, less than a ten minute walk to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and a pleasant shopping district to the south. The only criticism that I have is that the building itself is a little older and the rooms a little dated, but then brand new high rise hotels don’t have the character of the Xian Garden Hotel, and isn’t that part of the reason to stay here? I would stay here again.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

For USAians that are looking to shop for necessities, there is a Wal-Mart in a shopping plaza maybe a fifteen-twenty minute walk south of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Go south of the Art museum; look for a Starbucks and a Jackie-Chan theater to the right hand side of the street with all of the statues as you are facing south. The Wal-Mart is down the escalators. It’s hard to be home sick with a two liter of Coke and a pack of Oreo cookies!

We stayed six days at the hotel,

We stayed six days at the hotel, with our two young kids, and we found the Xi’an Garden Hotel clean and nicely decorated, with a beautiful garden. It is not located in the city center, but it is near many restaurants and places to eat. A taxi to the center does not cost much, while many attractions are not located in the city anyway. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Some of them don’t have much English, but if needed they will get someone who does. The western breakfast gives you a wide choice, from cereals or toast to ham-and-egg. If you go see the terracotta army, it is best just to arrange transportation there and make use of one of the official guides at the museum, as they speak good English, know what they are talking about, and have the patience to explain details. Our experience with an external guide taking us there was not so good, as he was mostly interested in getting us buy expensive souvenirs from shops that apparently offered him a good commission.

The hotel is a fair distance from

The hotel is a fair distance from the town with a taxi or bus needed. It is however a bit quieter than the hotels in town with access to a garden. There is a park close by and some restaurants in easy walking distance. Chinese style hotel which is now a bit tired looking and the majority of the staff have no English. A bit of effort required to organise tours as no tour desk or details of available tours.

It was a pleasure to walk into

It was a pleasure to walk into the hotel and look out towards the traditional gardens and the two peacock guardians. It was restful, relaxing and reassuring. Beds were the softest we had encountered in China. The neighbouring gardens with their musical fountains were also a highlight of our stay.
