Luxury retreat in Shanghai near the Bund

This eye-catching 26-story hotel -- topped with a lotus crown and anchored by a glowing glass staircase -- frequently appears on the Condé Nast Traveler "Gold List." The 570 spacious rooms include Westin's Heavenly bed, free wireless Internet, and an oversized marble soak tub. The two-story Westin Workout Gym, a 20-meter (66-foot) indoor pool, and Banyan Tree Spa provide ample recreation choices. The Stage restaurant hosts the most celebrated Sunday brunch in Shanghai.

Highlights
  • Convenient location between the Bund and People's Square
  • Two-story Westin Workout Gym and large indoor pool
  • Banyan Tree Spa and in-room spa service
  • Three restaurants, including Shanghai's most celebrated Sunday brunch spot
Rooms

A muted white-and-brown color palette and streamlined Art Deco look create a soothing atmosphere in the 570 spacious rooms and suites, which offer city and river views. Rooms feature the Westin Heavenly Bed, flat-screen television, fax machine, and a large desk. Wi-Fi is free, but fees apply for high-speed Internet access. Marble bathrooms have an oversized tub and separate shower stall with a rainforest showerhead. Westin Workout Rooms include exercise equipment en suite.

Dining

Prego, a casual Italian restaurant, offers wood-fired pizzas and an extensive grappa list. EEST Crystal Garden serves up Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes. The Stage restaurant -- where guests will find the breakfast buffet -- hosts Shanghai's most celebrated Sunday brunch, complete with acrobats and opera singers. Guests in search of a quick snack should stop at Bliss juice bar and Treats bakery.

Recreation

The Banyan Tree Spa draws on the five traditional Chinese elements -- earth, fire, water, metal, and wood -- for both its interior design and its element facials. The spa lets guests pick from seven massages -- and decide whether to have the massage delivered, for in-room spa service.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

The famous shopping street is just a few blocks from the hotel. To find the bargains and knockoff purses go to the Science and Technology center. Under the center is the underground shopping area. You can find cheap silk outfits, purses, watches, luggage, etc....

Beautiful Hotel

The hotel was very clean and the service was exceptional. Short walk to the historic Bund waterfront. Construction on the waterfont did not allow us to view the river though. We stayed in a suite which was very large and clean.

Price/night = $116. For quality of experience, well worth it. Great loc. and really nice room. When people say this is starwood's best property, I can see why.

wonderful hotel

Nicely located hotel that is close to shopping, restaurants (both Chinese and Western) and the subway station (on E. Nanjing Rd.) You can walk to the Bund area easily. The hotel is one of the nicest I have stayed in. The hotel restaurants are a bit pricey but you have many other options nearby. I would definitely stay there again.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

I love getting around the city on the Metro so the subway station being about a 10 min. walk from the hotel is great. For 3 or 4rmb, you can get around the city quite inexpensively and not spend time sitting in traffic.

Customer Service - they really 'get it'!

What a great spot to stay while in Shanghai (2 stays during the course of our trip)- exceeded our expectations as seasoned travelers. Staff was welcoming, knowledgeable, creative and helpful - even more important to guests who don't speak the local language. The beds were top-notch comfortable, and the list of possible add-ons if desired was visible to the guest. Privacy was respected, the property offers a quiet respite from the busy city it's located in. Front desk, concierge and staff that greeted were friendly and well-trained.

Nightlife tip: Short drive from hotel

Use the metro to get everywhere - it's fastest, including the Jazz clubs - we enjoyed the "Brown Sugar" in Xitiandi - about 2 metro stops from the hotel - or a very inexpensive taxi ride.
