Five-star hotel near prime Shanghai shopping and sightseeing
The Howard Johnson brand has gone upscale in China compared to its American roots. This modern 27-story hotel earned a five-star rating when it opened in 2003. However, this hotel is a modest entry in Shanghai's crowded five-star category. The hotel flanks the pedestrian mall portion of Nanjing Road, which has long been called China's number one shopping street. A five-minute walk east leads guest to the Bund, while a five-minute walk west takes guests to People's Square.
Highlights
- Prime location in the heart of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall
- Five-minute walk to the Bund or People's Square
- Two restaurants and a wine bar
- Free parking, a rarity in Shanghai
Rooms
The 360 ample rooms -- 127 of them suites -- in this 27-story building have a marble bathroom, safe, mini-bar, large writing table, flat-screen television, and free high-speed Internet. The combination of patterns and colors in the rooms are striking, with dark redwood furniture, yellow-and-white Mondrian grid fabric on a chair, brown block-pattern carpet, and bronze jacquard linens.
Features
The hotel's prime location along Nanjing Road pedestrian mall is its top selling point. Guests can reach two of Shanghai's top tourist destinations -- the Bund and People's Square -- within a five-minute walk. Countless restaurants and shops lie within blocks of the hotel. If guests choose to dine in, they can sip a drink at the lobby wine bar or choose from Chinese or Western fare at the two restaurants on site. The spa includes a sauna and steam bath, indoor pool, and hot tub. Parking is free for hotel guests -- a rarity in Shanghai.

Great for families, or single,
This hotel has a truly excellent location, very short walk to the square and the best pedestrian shopping street in Shanghai, and to the Bund. The food was excellent, as was the room. The staff were very helpful, and helped to arrange two excellent tours (to the water city, a must, and a river trip at night (spectacular). I had to prompt them to check other tour companies that had tours running in the off season, but the result was great; nearly private tours with one other charming family or traveling companion each time. The price was quite reasonable, for a central big city hotel. I would definately choose to stay in this hotel again if going to Shanghai as a tourist.

Great location, but services need improv
I was spending my vacation with my son in Shanghai. This hotel is centally located, close to the Nanjing pedestrain street, the Bund, the People's Park and Shanghai Meseum. The staffs at the front desk are somewhat cold. The restaurant on the second floor is really poorly managed. The staffs definitely need more training. I had a dinner there with 7 invited friends. They forgot a to cook one of the dishes I ordered. In the end I had to cancel that dish.

In the beginning,we were actually
In the beginning,we were actually a bit uncertain about this hotel espeically when we read such a review about its room temperature, it was said that even during the cold winter, the room is like a sona house. As most people voted high score for its location, we finally booked it. The stay turned out to be a wonderful one. When we arrived we were upgraded to a suite which is clean, spacious and comfy. the toilet is big and clean too. We didn't find any noise problem as some reviews mentioned. The locaion is good too, it is 5 minutes walk to Nanjing Dong Lu metro station and around 7 minutes to People's square Sation. We took the subway quite a few times. And the staff is willing to help to call the texi too. We will definately stay here again.

Excellent Hotel!
This hotel was excellent and we would definately stay there again when we return to Shanghai. It was very clean, new looking, and in a great location. We were upgraded for free to a suite which was very nice. Hotel staff spoke good English and were helpful in providing information on where to eat and such. The hotel did have breakfast and restaurants but we did not eat at the hotel due to other circumstances. My husband used the gym and he really enjoyed the equipment they had. Check-in and check-out was very smooth. Much more so than other hotels in China! Highly recommended.

Nightlife tip:
Short walk from hotel
Nanjing Street Pedestrian Street is almost across from the hotel. Not even one block over. Tons of restaurants, shops, and wonderful architectural buildings in The Bund area. Wonderful to walk at night with the beautiful lights.

Excellent location; just walk
Excellent location; just walk across the road to Nanjing Rd where there's lots of shopping. Also close to other attractions e.g Bund. Minor problem with security key sometimes not working when using lift and accessing room. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend friends to stay in this hotel.

Definately international five
Definately international five star cleanliness. deco is comfortable but the toilet deco is only average. Location is good but not yet best. I would give it a best rating for location if it is located nearer to the metro. Walking to the nearest metro is about 10 to 15mins walk. Surrounding of hotel is peaceful with only a few begger but there are always some strangers (a few young males and a few young females) always standing without reason near the hotel entrance. However, these people did not approach me which could be due to the fact that i have a wife with me. There is a 24hrs food store (Yong He Dou Jiang) serving soyabean food and chinese snacks which is good. This hotel will cause you 165yuan to reach by taxi from Pudong Airport. Not advisable to use metro to reach with your heavy lugguage as the walk from metro to the hotel is a very busy Nanjing street. Not so safe in such busy street with your lugguage as you are easily targeted.
