Once Upon a Time in Old Shanghai at Fairy-Tale Villa in City Center

British merchant Eric Moller built this fairy-tale villa in 1936. Construction took nine years to perfect his daughter's vision of a castle straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen tale. The half-acre garden and Norwegian-style mansion preserve a wonderful piece of Old Shanghai history. The building opened as a 43-room hotel in 2002. The hotel makes a nice base for exploring the leafy lanes of the French Concession. Guests can find countless restaurants and shops nearby.

Highlights
  • Fairy-tale villa built in 1936
  • Lovely half-acre garden
  • Nice location for exploring the leafy lanes of the French Concession
Rooms

The fantasy of the facade does not extend to all 43 rooms. The smaller superior rooms lie in a back annex and have rather simple furnishings. Executive rooms and deluxe suites occupy the original mansion and feature more ornate period-style furnishings. All rooms come with a mini-bar, safe, and desktop computer with free high-speed Internet.

Features

Guests can dine onsite in the Japanese restaurant or the Lily Restaurant or grab a morning coffee from the coffee bar. The lovely half-acre garden is a wonderful spot to relax and take in the fascinating details of the property: the gingerbread-style trim, the graceful arched windows, the playful stone Chinese lions, and the horse statue that marks the garden burial spot of Moller's favorite racehorse.

We enjoyed staying here on our

We enjoyed staying here on our recent business trip to Shanghai. The Moller Villa is a fantasy castle, an oasis in a busy, crazy city. The room was newly renovated, but smallish, but the bed was huge!! and the free internet/ LCD TV was beyond expectations. Breakfast is ok....they keep the food to long so some things are not that fresh. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the girls at the desk spoke adequate english to be helpful with all our inquiries. Recommend as a very comfortable, relaxing place to stay.

A genuinely unique hotel, converted from a fairy-tale residence that was built for the daughter of a British Shanghai resident in the 1930's. The building has been tastefully preserved. The location in the heart of the French Concession on Puxi side of Shanghai is excellent.

We really enjoyed staying in this

We really enjoyed staying in this hotel.Although the building looks like something from a theme park the architecture and old world interiors were lovely and the gardens and pond made for a relaxing quiet environment after the hustle and bustle on the streets of Shanghai .

Return to Old Shanghai

This is a good hotel for people who would accept a trade-off and give up certain modern conveniences for a taste of old Shanghai atmosphere. The hotel was build in 1936 by Eric Moller. Constructing a mansion in Shanghai on the eve of the Second World War must be eccentric if not crazy, but there he did it for his daughter who wanted to raise horses, and the mansion came with a formidable stable. The mansion was bought and converted into a hotel, then shut down, and bought out and re-opened. We stayed in the main house, room 1201, a junior suite, which came with a jacuzzi. The room was bright and cheerful but to reach it one needs to take stairs. The room is not really cheap either, but for a taste of something different, it is worth considering.

NIce frontage no substance

Marketed as a fairytail adventure but in reality it is an old dirty building, inefficient unattentive staff. I booked 2 nights but stayed only one. Definately not a five star hotel.
