Historic hotel in French Concession district mixes old and new Shanghai
This large hotel and garden complex preserves a wonderful piece of Old Shanghai history. The three-story French Renaissance villa, built in 1925, is among the architectural gems of the French Concession district. Gangster "Big-Eared" Du Yuesheng called the property home in the 1930s. Guests can catch many lovely vignettes of everyday life by walking the tree-lined lanes nearby, like morning tai-chi in nearby Xiangyang Park and locals strolling in their pajamas. The surrounding area is packed with restaurants, spas, and shops.

Quiet and plenty of character
An older building, located in the French Concession area, this is a quiet hotel of a high standard. Split over various buildings, the main building (no 1) is the best. Despite lacking shops, and a bar, the hotel has a 25m swimming pool, that is normally quiet, with only 2-3 users maximum at any time. Its location is ideal, in an up-market area, close to shops, bars and restaurants with plenty of character, and only 10 minutes walk from the subway.

Beautiful Room! Great Location!
We had the deluxe balcony room and I highly recommend paying the extra for the upgraded room. The room was huge and beautifully decorated with a enclosed hardwood porch with laquer table and furniture. We had exquisite service with immediate attention to any request from ice for the room to an extra 110 adapter. The pool, sauna and exercise facility was top notch. The hotel complex is large with all grades of rooms. The breakfast was about 100 yuan and included American foods as well as Chinese. The made-to-order omelttes rivaled Embassy Suite and the croissants were great.

Short walk from hotel
Outstanding restaurants of all cuisine within a 3 block area - even an American restaurant. Taxis with a lift of the finger - less than $2 US to most places. Don't be afraid to get out and walk - lots of places to eat and drink - convenience store across street from hotel.

Great hotel
We travel to Shanghai frequently as a family and stay at the Dong Hu in the French Concession. The hotel is a bit shabby, but the rooms are spacious and reasonably priced. There are several buildings in the hotel and there are very cheap rooms across the street from the main building We stay in the main building and find it charming.

Favorite Hotel in Shanghai
The Dong Hu is a wonderful hotel and we have stayed there at least 5 times in the past 3 years. The prices are reasonable and the rooms, though fairly simple, are spacious. There are a number of buildings with a variety of rooms. We stay in the main building. The pool is fantastic although you will need to have (or purchase) a swim cap to use it.

The Shanghai Min (Shanghai Little Southern Country) restaurant on the 4th floor in the building across the street is great. There is also an excellent French bistro around the block.

hidden gem
I must say I didn't expect much when I booked the hotel. It was till the next morning I realized how convenient it was located. Wherever I go, whether it was tianzifang or xintiandi, it didn't take us more than 15 minutes cab ride. Everywhere was just within reach. Though it's not grand hyatt or shangri la, it has it's uniqueness. Still preserve the old shanghai feel to the hotel. Overall, it was quite an unique experience.

The main thing I didn't like about
The main thing I didn't like about the deal is that it doesn't come with breakfast even when I'd paid for the 800rmb per night version. Not terribly fair I think. So most mornings I would walk across to Wagas, a cool little cafe serving good coffee and cool western cafe food to surf and eat. It's most convenient this way doing business meetings over cappuccino and crossaint. Too much Chinese food can wreck your belly.

A Flavor of Old Shanghai
Can't beat the location of this hotel. After the hubbub of Beijing it was nice to be in the quiet streets of this part of Shanghai. The hotel itself has quite a history and then to walk the streets especially in the morning you get a sense of this area from the tai chi in the park, to the peddlars on their bikes, to the street market. We enjoyed several of the local restaurants avoiding the pricey ones. We even had delicious soup dumplings near the subway stop one morning for breakfast. The bathroom was the biggest drawback (shower drain was slow and water leaked on to the floor) but our daughter's room had no problems. We spent two full days there: one day for the Expo and the other for taking in the town (Bund, Urban Planning Museum, Peoples Park, Yu Garden, and several shopping markets). There was more to do than we could manage. If we ever go back we'd stay there again.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
The front desk staff referred us to two different Chinese restaurants a short walk from the hotel for our two evening meals. We had the advantage of having a daughter who speaks Chinese with us plus friends of hers for both outings. Both places were reasonable and the food was outstanding. Sorry I don't know the names of either one, but one was the equivalent of an American diner with a wide selection of types of food (American, Italian, various types of Chinese). The other was typical Chinese with delicious food.

An piece of colonial history
A quiet hotel in the up-market French concession area, close to many good restaurants and ideally located for subway lines 1, 7 and 10. Excellent 25m swimming pool that rarely has more than 2 or 3 people using it.

The subway to the airport is now open and you can get downtown for only 7 RMB, comparing well with the price of a taxi (160 RMB). Alternatively there is the airport bus, number 2 to the terminal at Jing'an for only 22 RMB.

My 2nd stay at the Donghu Hotel,
My 2nd stay at the Donghu Hotel, large room facing garden, fast and reliable internet, great location, heaps of bars returants and coffee shops in the street. Front desk girl is not the happiest creture on the face of the earth but gets the job done without issues. Good value for money, we are booked to go back in a few days.
