North Bund architectural gem where history is an added attraction
This North Bund landmark opened its doors in 1857 and played a prominent role in Shanghai's development into a bustling port city in the early 1900s. The six-story hotel boasted the city's first electric lights (1882) and phone call (1901) and hosted such dignitaries as Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin. Today the neoclassical Baroque building attracts history and architecture buffs as well as travelers who value the prime location across the Waibaidu Bridge from the Bund.
Highlights
- Historic and architectural gem in Shanghai
- Three-minute walk to the Bund across Waibaidu Bridge
- Attractive Bund views -- especially at night -- from top-floor rooms
Rooms
The 130 rooms measure from 269 to 538 square feet and include laptop-sized safe, minibar, and high-speed Internet. Deluxe rooms best capture the hotel's historic charm thanks to wooden floors, carved moldings, and high ceilings. Higher-floor rooms enjoy attractive views of the Bund, especially at night.
Features
Richard's Restaurant and Bar serves an impressive breakfast buffet and specializes in Huaiyang and Sichuan fare at lunch and dinner. A coffee bar is also available. Guests can get a beauty treatment on site or take advantage of in-room massage service. Other recreational facilities include a dancing hall and chess room. Astor House Twin Bed
I stayed there a week before in the Executive Suite. It was beautiful, clean, & overlooked the Bund. Located on the corner of a major street, so quite noisy. If you stay in anything less than that class of rooms it is gross, smelly, and in a back section of the hotel not yet renovated, kinda old scary movie like.

Overpriced for quality offered.
Overpriced for quality offered. TV sound from next door room a problem - walls must be thin or TV loud. Creaky, and a bit awkward. Location the key.

Oldest Hotel in China
An incredible breakfast buffet, high Victorian ceilings, pleasant staff and conveniently located. Room was very warm but public areas and lobby were chilly in January. Our room had no view but a quick duck outside rewarded one with all the view you could want

A good value-for-money hotel in
A good value-for-money hotel in a great location. While rooms are large and the 'original' floor boards have been retained, it is time for the floors to be upgraded (for health and safety) and some furniture should be replaced. Staff assistance in the main lobby area was very good. Room service was not so good. A good range of food was provided at breakfast but the 'hot' food was often too cold to enjoy. Other food areas for lunch/dinner etc were very disappointing.

Great location at north side of
Great location at north side of the Waibaidu Bridge, north end of the bund. the lift to go to the rooms is on a level about about 10 steps up from the foyer level. the stair steps had no handrails so my elderly mum could not leave the hotel or go to breakfast without help up or down these stairs. the hotel had run out of key cards so we could only get one key to share between us; the desk staff thought it was very funny. the breakfast room was grand and the food was varied and plentifull. the room was spacious and the bathroom was recently renovated.

They asked if we wanted an upgrade
They asked if we wanted an upgrade which is going to cost 2500 RMB at check-in which we declined. We are giving a room on 6th floor with a very small window and unble to look out of the window. We request a room with windows and able to open up for fresh air. There was no problem in changing room. This time we are giving a room on the 4th floor, an very large older room with 3 large windows and looking toward the Bund and the bridge which light up at night. The only problem is very noisy with traffic both day and night. We are happy to put up with the noise. Overall happy with the location and service but We don't think the sheets had been changed for the 8 days that we stay and the non-slip bath mat in the shower appears mouldy and dirty.
