This hotel was so so. While it
This hotel was so so. While it was fairly clean and in a great location, it smelt smokey and drab. We stayed in a nicer hotel (other hotel) prior to this and was an A+ hotel the same price. I would not stay here again due to the fact that I think you can get a better place for this price. Only stay here if you get a bargain price. Definately not the worst hotel you could stay in but its not as nice as it looks in the photos.

Clean, looks nice, good breakfast
Clean, looks nice, good breakfast (the dinner at the hotel was not good) walking distance to the park and the forbidden city. There's a great cafe with good coffee, hot chocolate, fruit and pancakes on the corner in the Chinese building (go left from entrance, walk 100 metres) and a (now very rare) soviet-style communist memorial to the right from the entrance and left round the corner (4 minutes walk) close to convenience store and fruit shop.

Go to a better hotel
I visited Beijing for 5 days. The location is good and the price reasonable. I chose this hotel because I saw 4 out 5 rating at the time I booked the hotel. However you get what you paid for. For the first two days, the non-smoking room reeked tobaccos. and it is really noisy if you live on the side next to a busy street. The staffs were polite, but they provided no help. The blanket was dirty, and the carpet needs to be replaced! The a/c could not really cool down the room. I would never use this hotel again.

Tourism in Beijing
The Sha Tan is located within 5 minutes of the Forbidden City, Jinghsan Park, Beihi Park, Tianamen Square and the Lao She Teahouse. This is great for a toursit, but it also comes with a price of heavy traffic from Chinese tour groups which are loud and unruly. The hotel diner is best avoided, eat somewhere, anywhere else. The rooms are small, but very clean and western.

PAY FOR BETTER HOTEL!!!
Hotel is in a good central location that most cab drivers knew. Staff was horrible and treated you like a disease. Room AC was moderate at best and this time of year was well over 100F. I would recommend getting a hotel near Wangfujing because it is a nicer area more choices of food. If you go in the summer, make sure hotel has a pool. It will be a blessing.

Not Applicable
Make sure to haggle everything. Chinese are quick to over charge "laowei" (foreigners). Make sure to get cabs with a meter and make sure they use it. Average should be 10 yuan.

The hidden one
The hotel is hidden but you are close to the heart of China, the locals. Get lost in the hutongs.

Fantastic hotel in city center- Beijing
This hotel was not only super nice by Chinese standards, but I think it would be considered nice by American standards as well. The rooms are very clean and quiet and have HBO! Staying in this room, you could be anywhere in the world. The only downside is that not every room has a window, so ask if you'd like one, although you'll probably just see a view of another building.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
There are many dining options on Sha Tan backstreet. Just look for a clean-looking restaurant that already has many diners inside. That's what we did and we were not disappointed.
