NIce hotel and great location
Milena Sep 27, 2009
Great hotel! The location was great (right next to The Forbidden City and a short walk to Tienanmen Square) and there are ... tons of great restaurants near by. I recommend walking down the street to the night food market. The rooms are very nice and roomy for a big city. The exterior wall is a hige window, allowing lots of light during the day (but with sufficient black-out drapes). The hotel staff was very helpful and spoke English fluently. The nearest subway stop was about 4 blocks away. Only two small drawbacks. First, the bed is extremely firm, but based on other stays in Asia, not unduly hard. The other (possible) drawback is that the bathroom is comprised of glass walls, with a large curtain but if your a little shy with your roommate, it might make you uncomfortable to use the bathroom in front of them. Overall, I highly recommend the hotel.

Excellent location and beautiful room
Xardioso Sep 5, 2009
My girlfriend stayed at many different hotels as we traveled through China and Asia this past August. Kapok was one of the ... best. The location is fantastic. If you make a left out of the front door of the hotel, it's less than a ten minute walk to reach the wall of the Forbidden City. If you make a left and walk around, you will soon reach the main entrance. If you make a right out of a hotel, you will reach a Bank of China (good for exchanging currency) in a matter of minutes, and Wangfujing Dajie (a famous shopping street with a thriving night market) shortly thereafter. From there, it's just a hop, skip, and jump to the nearest metro station, from which you can move around the city for much less than a cab. You can also head to the bus depot at the Dongzhimen subway stop, and catch a bus to any of the three Great Wall locations. The staff at Kapok was friendly, helpful, and spoke fairly good English. My girlfriend and I bothered the front desk on several occasions with questions regarding transportation in the city, recommendations on things to see, and even vegan restaurants in the city. The staff was always helpful, courteous, and knowledgable, and made calls to restaurants to inquire on our behalf. The room itself was clean and large. The bed was comfortable. Above the headboard there was an interesting lit up wall panel with a design of dots of light. It was quite pretty. The t.v. was fine, except that it seemed to be a bit quiet; I had to turn the volume up all the way to hear some channels. The bathroom was glass, with a curtain that could be pulled around the outside for privacy. I'm not sure why several hotels in China had glass bathrooms. There was a certain novelty to the feature, but be aware of it if it may be a problem for you. The bathroom was designed in three sections. You entered into a section with a sink and all the standard freebies (dental kit, hygiene kit, comb, etc.). The next section, separated by a sliding glass door, was the toilet. The shower was located in the third section. There was no door between the toilet and the shower, and the opening between the sections could not be closed. Personally, I didn't love this feature, because it meant that taking a shower would invariably result in water getting on the floor around the touilet, when water went astray or the water could not drain fast enough. I'm just nit-picking though; this is not a major complaint. Overall, I thought that Kapok was an excellent hotel, with an ideal location. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in Beijing for tourism purposes.

Take public transportation. The subway and buses are *extremely* cheap. I would recommend the subway over buses, as it is faster and you are less likely to get lost. The subway system is very efficient and clean. Please note that it doesn't appear to run late at night. Taxis in Beijing aren't terribly expensive, but the costs can add up if you're going all about town. Traffic in Beijing is terrible, and it's a rather large city. Take the subway.

Walk around the palace moat(2 blocks away) at dusk. Walk east on Donganmen St (2-3 blocks) in the evening for the crazy food vendores. (The fried bugs are pretty tasty.) Another block or two that way brings ou to Wangfujing Pedestrian mall (lots of shopping). In the morning, walk along park on east side of Riverside Street (one block away). Check out the lovely park near Riverside and Xichangan (about 10 minute walk).

Modern hotel in the heart of Beijing
Design Traveller Aug 28, 2009
Hotel is modern and clean, though the rooms show a bit of wear. Great location next to Forbidden City and Wang Fu Jing ... shopping district. Bathroom with glass walls can be awkward if you're not sharing the room with an intimate partner.

I was there for conference. Wife was there for touring. We had some hassles getting from airport to hotel (not the hotels ... fault at all; just bad taxi luck). The manager saw how frazzled we were and gave us upgrade to ridiculously wonderful suite. Separate couch seating area. Gigantic tub. Nice view of street. The room was so nice that we changed our social plans, deliberately eating in on one night and entertaining associates the other night. The lobby was also a restful and relaxing place to work. Free wifi. Several roomy cubicles in their library area. The staff lets you work there without hassle. It is not always obvious, but most of the lobby can be used as lounge space (including the glassed-in outside tables). Just ask the staff if you can order drinks. Long story short, the hotel had a very unique style. Much more stylish than the trendy chains, and much better service. It is a mature, well thought out, hip space.

Kapok ++
Plush backpacker Jul 26, 2009
I stayed two nights at the Kapok and much appreciated the clean and comfortable rooms. In particular, the beds, although ... hard by Western standards are soft by Chinese norms and I found them much more comfortable than the usual Chinese hotel sleeping slab. Additional details: the interior design is interesting, sort of a fusion of Scandinavian and Asian styl, location can't be beat for touring in central Beijing. The wired internet connection worked well. Front desk staff were quick, courteous and helpful. My standard rooms was a bit small, though the bathroom was very spacious and closet space was plentiful.

If you're looking for an interesting dinner experience, step out of the hotel, turn right and walk down the street a few blocks. You'll come to a long stretch of street food vendors serving evening snacks and dinner under a row of red paper lanterns. The variety and prices are both great.

Kapok Beijing Review
AK Jul 21, 2009
Very good location - easy walk to Forbidden city & T. Square, Wanfujing area. Clean & nice rooms. Bell desk guys are ... efficient & nice. The reception staff didn't know details about places. There is a convenient store (Q) across the road. Only problem is that bathroom walls are all glass with curtains - no doors! Also, it cost 12 Yuan to print a paper (like your boarding pass).

Trips are cheaper if you book from a travel agency across the door (diagonally to the left of the entrance on the other side of the road).
