Budget-friendly courtyard-style hotel near the Forbidden City

The Days Inn Forbidden City Beijing has a proud history. The hotel was once the sprawling courtyard complex of a well-known warlord. Today the hotel's 160 rooms provide a peaceful rest stop for travelers weary from sightseeing at the nearby Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, or shopping on Wangfujing Street. Guests can park for free -- a rarity in Beijing.

Highlights
  • Convenient location near the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square
  • Free parking
  • Free high-speed Internet
Rooms

The 160 modest-sized rooms stick to the basics: white linens, beige carpet and curtains. All rooms come with a workstation, mini-bar, safe, flat-screen television, and free high-speed Internet. The budget single rooms, in the basement, go for a cheaper rate than rooms on other floors.

Features

This hotel's location is its prime selling point. A ten-minute walk takes guests to several of Beijing's most famous landmarks, including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the National Theater. Shopping choices abound on nearby Wangfujing Street, and two convenient subway stations provide easy access to the rest of Beijing. The property's courtyard-style layout provides a welcome change from Beijing's many high-rise hotels. The hotel's restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The breakfast buffet includes both Chinese and Western dishes.

Great stay.

This hotel has a great location and staff very friendly & helpful. The first room here at this hotel was on the first floor and was a standard room very clean comfortable. I switched rooms during my stay and saved some money to a basement budget room and is basically the same room but smaller. Nice area and close to many sights. Will stay here again.

Economic Stay

If you're looking for an economic stay in Beijing, this hotel may be for you. I booked a room for approx $60 per night and wasn't expecting anything glamorous. Upon arrival the staff was fine - not overly friendly, but helpful enough. My room was small, dark and in drastic need of an update. But, it was clean enough and I didn't plan on spending much time there. The location works well as it is near the subway line and walking distance to Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square. If you're staying with a family, you may want to look elsewhere. But for an individual or couple looking for cheap accommodations on the go, I would recommend Days Inn.

Good Value

If your goal is to be close to Tianeman Square and the Forbidden City, I don't believe there is a greater value to be had. Other hotels in this area are all huge five star monstrosities. This is a very nice 3 story hotel. The rooms are roomy and clean. The restaurant is a combination Chinese American Food place. I would stay again if the above referenced were my focus. Beijing is huge and so it kind of helps to know what you want to see. Also this place is close to the subway with easy access to everywhere around town.

A couple nights in Beijing

The strongest point of this hotel is that it is a 10 minute walk from the gates of Forbidden City. I don't think there are many other hotels this close. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is good with a mix of Asian and Western cuisine. Sometimes it seems the staff has little experience, i.e. they set the table but forget the utensils. Some of the staff speak very good English, so no worries there. From a Western viewpoint, the room was average and nothing to write home about. Maybe from a Chinese perspective it is better. Order the deluxe room; at least it will be above ground. Bring your own shaving stuff or you will have to buy what is in the room. The bed was fine. I would have preferred wireless internet. The hotel supplies a LAN cable and the wall jack works once you figure out which jack to use. The other jack is for something else but it isn't clearly marked. Overall, I'd gladly stay there again. No regrets

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Try to find a hotel within a short walk of many attractions. You can save a lot of money and look at what you want to see by taking the tours without a guide. Usually, these hotels are near the centre of the city so there are night attractions as well.

Days Inn

No problem whatsoever. Standard amenities for a Days Inn hotel. I partially chose the hotal for the location, but, though near the Forbidden City, other amenities such as shops are not particularly good here.

Close to the Sights of Beijing

The hotel was as advertised. Incredibly convenient to the Forbidden City and Tiannamen Square. The staff was helpful, although at the reduced rate I paid for the room, I was given a basement room, not bad with a small window near the ceiling. The hotel was accommodating, free internet [no WiFi], and a free adaptor to borrow. The staff was fluent in English and arranged cabs for me and good walking directions.

Great location and small, updated room

I thought the location was great - just a few blocks from Tienanmen Square, Forbidden City, and the metro. Also, there is a great dumpling place on the same block. The rooms were very small, but nicely updated and quite comfortable.

Location, Location, Location

I chose this hotel because of the location and I was not disappointed. It was the quality of accommodations that I expected from a Days Inn. The room was small but comfortable enough, and had everything I needed. Be careful about using the items in the room, though because they charged for just about everything -- even the tea bags, which are usually complimentary. The shower was excellent, and the quality of the linens was superior. The ATM machine in the lobby was not working, but there were plenty of other ones in the neighborhood. The location was really convenient -- walking distance to Tianamen Square and the Forbidden City, and to shopping and restaurants. I wanted to experience the Metro and it was also great for that. I stayed there for four nights, and I would stay there again.

There was a pleasant small park just a half a block from the hotel that was very nice for a short walk and just to sit, read, and relax and pass some quiet time.

Location, location, location

Walking pass the front gate of palace museum every morning around 5. Watching the flag raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square sometimes. Too many visitors in the day time. There is a small, but beautiful park, near the hotel.

A Steal for the Price

I came to Beijing to teach English for a year, but quickly decided teaching (and Beijing) weren't for me. I ended up taking an unplanned vacation all over Beijing before I went home. I booked the hotel the day before I came to stay. When I was in the cab going there, I called the hotel and the concierge told the cab driver how to get there. This was extremely helpful! I originally was supposed to get a basement room, but there was something wrong with the room and they upgraded me at no cost to a room on the third floor. The bed was a double, which was more than big enough for me (4ft, 11 in). The room was clean, had a great shower and nice TV, internet and laundry service, plus a nice view of the hutong next to the hotel. They had HBO, which was great. It was also conveniently in between two different subway stops on Line 1. Worst thing about the hotel was the restaurant. I had an average breakfast, which was way overpriced. Also, no one really ever eats in the restaurant. However, there are lots of places to eat around the hotel, so it doesn't matter too much.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

If there is a subway stop close to the place you want to visit, take the subway, not a cab. The subway system is really easy to figure out and inexpensive. The only downside is that you will invariably end up crushed into a car with a ton of people. However, I think you learn more about what it really means to live in Beijing this way. Also, take the bus just to the take the bus. It's an experience for sure.
