This is rated as a 4 star hotel and falls well short of that description. The staff are good, comfortable beds and great views but the rooms are very small and the furnishings are below average. To my mind not value.

A great hotel with a pretty good view. Cheap taxis make the location good. The only problem here was the breakfast. Although they call it an American Breakfast it is just a Continental cold breakfast. People nice and helpful

great hotel clean and new free internet continental breakfast plenty to eat they serve snacks and drinks throughout the day up on the hillside so not close to downtown but great view and can walk down to arty area then get the cable car to the bottom taxi cost 6000 pesos to the port would stay there again

For those who want the ambiance
For those who want the ambiance of being up in the hills, which Valparaiso is all about it is good, basic hotel but clean. Lack of choice in restaurant bit limiting and walk up the hills would be hard for not so fit, taxi cost around C$2000 which was not too bad from Conception.

The hotel was clean and modern with a lovely terrace that faced the bay and hills of Valparaiso. The location of the hotel was a 20-30 minute walk from all restaurants, bars, and tourist attractions.

New to South America travel
A hidden tresure!
This gem of a hotel was very difficult to find, but worth the trouble! Amazing views of the bay were possible due to the hilly location. Once found, it´s very short walk down into town. Public transportation allows for a quick return from downtown.

Poor Service at Hotel Ultramar
When we checked in, the room was too small for 2 people (like the size of my closet). We asked about a larger room, which was not available. That is fine that the hotel was fully booked, but then at least give us the option to opt out of staying there due to the size of the room. On top of that, the hotel was going to charge us an additional $20 (US $), because they had us listed as only 1 person, not two. They were very unaccommodating and the manager would not even talk to us directly, she relayed all messages and responses to our questions through the front desk host. Her only response was that she was very busy and having a bad day, which is no way to treat paying guests. We ended up leaving without staying and still got billed for one person staying at the hotel. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
