Home away from Home

During our stay at the Reef Resort, we felt like family. Everyone was so nice and accommodating and the resort was so clean and beautiful. I was amazed each morning to see the groundspeople out on the beach cleaning up the algie that had washed ashore. One night we went to have dinner at the on-site restaurant (Castaway's) and we didn't realize it was closed for an outdoor barbecue. The director opened the restaurant and had the cook prepare us something to eat. We were the only two people in the restaurant and our personal waiter catered to our every need. When the lights came on, they allowed us to determine how dim to make them. We felt like royalty. Our room was very clean and everything was in working order. Nice sized closet with enough hangers. There is a grocery store across the street and the resort has an on-site bar and grill on the beach as well. We did take a tour one day of the island, but we were there for rest and relaxation and that was where we stayed. The Reef is located on the east end of the island. Not much night life in this area; however, the hotel activities and accommodations were more than sufficient for our visit. Barefoot Man (the island's version of Jimmy Buffet) had two weekly shows at Castaway's (on-site restaurant). We had a really good time dancing to the beat and the food was beyond measure. Try the Crusted Chicken. So if you want a clean, relaxing visit, The Reef should definitely be your choice. We will be back next year!!

Great!

The Reef Resort in Grand Cayman was great! The staff were friendly, for the most part, and accommodating. We were on our honeymoon and really enjoyed the privacy, even though most of the rooms with whirlpools in them are near the pool / hot tub and therefore at night were the loudest areas at the resort. The scenary was remarkable, actually unbelievable, and the fish right around the dock area were fantastic! We did't snorkle or dive, we just brought our swimming goggles and swam! We saw it all! Everything was expensive though, which made it difficult, even eating in our room (buying food from the local store). Its just expensive! We would consider a time share but could not completely understand all the details of what that would take. But if we can figure it out, we may just try to make it an annual event or every few years to come back. Yes, it was that good! But we wanted privacy. If you want a lot to do and action, you need to go to the other side of the Island. We visited there and like it, but wanted to be able to leave it behind and did! My wife and I had a great time! Thanks Reef!

Away from the hustle and bustle

The Reef Resort is located on the less commercialized east end of the island. If you want more seclusion stay here, if you prefer shopping, clubbing, etc, stay on 7 mile beach. If you stay here you will want to rent a car. There are very few restaurants that are close by so you have to drive. We ate at the bar one time and it was good. We did not eat at the main restaurant Castaways but heard it was good. The stayed in a deluxe studio room which had a kitchenette so we shopped at the grocery store across the street and ate breakfasts & lunches in our room. It was very nice being able to eat on the balcony overlooking the ocean. My wife enjoyed a massage at the spa onsite. I scheduled a few dives with Ocean Frontiers (who have an office onsite) and they picked me up and shuttled me to their main office. I was very pleased with them. We also snorkeled right off the beach and saw a lot of fish off the pier. The Reef offers a free gift if you speak to one of their staff about purchasing a time share there. We did this and went to Stingray City for free which was a lot of fun. There were only a few negatives. A full room service doesn't happen everyday, but housekeeping came when we asked them too. On our last day we did have ants invade the room for a banana we had in the cupboard. We also found 1 cockroach that I quickly killed. I wasn't too bothered by it and I don't know if that is to be expected on the island. Also, although we enjoyed not being surrounded by people, everything was very far. We only went in to Georgetown and 7 mile beach 1 day because of the distance (45 minutes).

Quiet getaway

The Reef Resort located in East End of the Grand Cayman was not what my wife and I were expecting. The Reef is strictly for those who wish to getaway from it all because it is very quiet and not surrounded by much. the main thing you can do is sit on the beach and read. There is a half-hearted effort for activities but not satisfying for a true vacation. For example they had Live Entertainment which actually were pretty good singers but the hotel made no effort in decorating the tables or the restaurant to set a festive tone. If you stay here you should just expect a room and pretty much left alone to do your own thing. No room service only a quick straighting up by housekeeping. My only high remarks are for the desk clerk. She was very sweet and helpful. She went out of her way to make sure we were happy with everything we asked of her including helping us locate our lost luggage and a rental car to explore the island.

The shopping is a grocery store. There are no malls no souvenir shops. The grocery store was helpful because the rooms have kitchens. Good thing becuase though the hotel food is delicious it is outrageously over priced.

relaxing hotel

Reef Resort is a relaxing place with good snorkeling opportunity if the water is calm.I would recommend you a rental car as so many visitors before. The grocerie store and liquor store at the reef resort are extrem expensive. You can save easily 20% if you buy food and liquor after your arrival in George Town. Overall we enjoyed our 1 week stay there and since the island is not that big, you can easily drive to rum point and seven miles beach.

Absolutely will go back again!!!!

Our 5 nights and 6 days were excellent and went by entirely too fast....The King Suite was impeccably clean and well equiped, the Murphy beds pulled down from a clever wall storage unit that looked like a sealed bookcase....The view from our balcony overlooked the pools and of course the Caribbean facing south....I could go on and on about our experience as it was first rate...The east end is the quite part of the Island...beautiful surroundings and the most spectacular water you will ever see...the snorkeling is excellent if you like the idea of swimming in a fish aquarium...the diversity of fish was amazing...We will go back again and as often as we can....This is also a time share opportunity for those that want to explore the possibilities...there is an open invitation to learn more with NO HIGH pressure sales pitch...Bottom line...if you want peaceful and relaxing surroundings and a wonderful beach setting please visit The Reef Resort, you won't be dissappointed....The local beer was a wonderful treat too!!!

there is a well stocked grocery one block from the resort that meets most needs for meals prepared in....If you want to go to any attractions on the Island you will have to rent a car or depend on ground transportation that is easily arranged BUT expensive...

Welcome to Paradise

Our trip from the airport was a little long but the country side that we saw on the way made up for it. Every person that we met, especially the locals, was extremely friendly and courteous to us at all times. The check-in was fast and smooth with all requests honored in a timely manner. Our room was always clean and tidy. The concierge and front desk staff were proficient and knowledgable in any area of interest we had. The Reef is the perfect place to go and relax knowing you are at one of the best on the island. The beach areas were always clean and pristine. The food had the local flavors and was quite delightful. The drinks were potent. We will tell all our friends and for sure we will return for a longer stay.

If you intend to explore the entire island it is advisable to rent a car, by the week, if that suits your needs. Only two restaurants in the area and a small shopping area nearby.

Condo-style rooms - quiet getaway

The Reef Resort really takes the best of the condo & hotel worlds and combines them into one. They rooms range form small Studio units with wetbar to 2 bedroom units with full kitchens. My husband and I had the Studio which is perfect if you intend to eat out the whole time. The Reef has one of the best big beaches on the island and a great pool location between the beach and the buildings. We liked the beach bar for drinks & lunch/casual dinner. We weren't thrilled with the Castaways restaurant. We are there on a Tuesday night for the Barefoot Man performance but were only satisfied with the food. Also, having Barefoot Man perform indoors makes it kind of cheesy...would be much better if he performed outside near the beach bar in the open air. We had an excellent time at this resort and rented a car to get around to restaurants, Georgetown & 7 Mile Beach. Be aware that the latter 2 are VERY FAR AWAY. However, there are great restaurants in East End and surrounding area if you have a car. Get restaurant ideas from Concierge @ The Reef. Room comments: Mattress was VERY HARD and thin & worn out. Need to be replaced. Not sure if all units are like this.

Try dining at Kaibo on Rum Point, but definitely also eat at The Lighthouse & Portofino's. OK if you skip dining @ Over the Edgo, we weren't that impressed and would have preferred eating at Kaibo again instead.

Relaxation

Room has a great view and and a balcony with chairs to enjoy it. Our room had microwave, toaster, sink, and refrigerator which we used every day to have breakfast on the balcony. Grocery store across the street has everything you need to stock up on drinks and snacks and lunch and dinner if you wanted. Very clean and new looking. Very comfortable bed.Must see sites are Rum Point, Stingray City and Turtle farm.7Mile beach is pretty but crowded. We all preferred our resorts beach (great snorkeling.. bring your gear!)
