Peace and quiet on the East End

The Reef Resort is a great getaway if you are craving quiet and relaxation. Every room has a beach view and you either have a patio (on the ground floor) or a balcony (on the 2nd and 3rd floors). The staff is polite and helpful. Minor problems we had (adjusting the a/c for example) were taken care of promptly. There are two pools to choose from as well as a long, white sand beach just made for beach combing. If you want to do things like play tennis, water aerobics or water sports, everything is available on-site. This is a great place to relax.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

A great addition is the new Italian Kitchen restaurant located across the street from the hotel. Very good pizza, pasta and more and being able to walk there is a huge plus (many of the restaurants on the island are in Georgetown which is a short distance mile-wise from the Reef Resort but which takes about 45 minutes of driving time since you are mainly on a two lane road that winds along the coast through a number of small towns),

3rd vacation at THe Reef

Great ocean-front location keeps us coming back! Most staff tries hard to accomodate wishes. Highly recommend "White Sands" on premises for personalized Awesome snorkeling adventure! Room upgrade offered for day 5 of 7 stay-Not ideal with only 60% reported occupancy. Believe repeat guests would be accomodated better for upgrade. Took ALL inclusive pkg. Food good but same menu for entire stay....need to change up menu.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Grocery store, dunkin donuts (across street ) and Subway on premises as alternative . Also, great local restaurants down the road.."Over the edge" for casual and reasonably-priced ocean front dining. Also, high priced cocktails at RUM POINT! Paid $28 (american currency) for 2 mudslides....BYOB..however not allowed on their beachfront.

Very Relaxing

If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to stay in the Caymans, the Reef is great! If you are looking to be in the center of all of the island's activities, this is not the place for you. The Reef is on the East end of the island, which is about a 45 minute drive from Georgetown. It is beautiful on the East end and is close to Rum Point and Cayman Kai. The botanical gardens, Mission House, Bodden Town, Wreck of the Ten Sail and blowholes are also on this side of the island. Very quiet, not a lot of traffic and plenty of interesting stops between the resort and Georgetown. I highly recommend renting a car if you are going to stay on the East end and plan on going to other parts of the island - it is very convenient and most of the cars are very fuel efficient. It will save you a lot of money on taxis/shuttles. All of the rooms at the Reef are ocean front. We had a second story room on the far end of the resort and it was very nice. Our room was one of the inexpensive ones, but it had a nice, comfortable king size bed, island decor, a decent size TV with American shows, a small kitchenette with coffee maker, microwave, small fridge, sink, plates, bowls, glasses and silverware. The bathroom was decent with a good shower/tub. We had a nice sized balcony with chairs and a table and a great big sliding door that we kept open all night so we could hear the ocean (best sleep ever!) The room was clean and comfortable with plenty of towels. The beach is clean and quiet with lots of lounge chairs and palm trees to relax under. The bar and restaurants were pretty far away from our room (but it helped us to avoid spending too much on drinks, plus it's a nice walk). The snorkeling is good by the resort and there are some other really great places close to the resort to snorkel. I also saw people kite surfing, kayaking and fishing. The resort has a dive/watersports shop with very helpful staff. Housekeeping, concierge and front desk staff all nice. Restaurant staff hit and miss - one night no one would wait on us and we left and ate somewhere else. Food and drinks were pretty pricey at the bar and restaurant but that is true for most places on the island. I recommend buying groceries at the grocery store across the street. There is also a Dunkin' Doughnuts, liquor store, dive shop and a really good Italian restaurant right across the street. The resort is nothing fancy if that is what you are looking for, this is not the place for you. The pools and hot tubs are small and nothing special. Overall we were very happy. I recommend this place to someone who wants peace and quiet and pretty much just wants to lay on the beach all day or someone that wants to travel around the island and explore and then return to someplace quiet and relaxed.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

You have to go to Stingray City - it is all that it is hyped up to be. The stingrays are beautiful and gentle and it's so amazing to see them swimming toward you waiting for a calamari treat!! I also highly recommend the Queen Elizabeth Botanical Garden - beautiful flowers, trees, birds (saw the Cayman parrot) and the rare blue iguana.

scuba diving vacation

the focus of my trip was scuba diving and it was good. The dive shop is a 5 min walk on the beach. Their staff is friendly and know what they are doing. They go to different sites on the east side of the island. Somewhat a bit expensive ($130 for a 2 tank dive) than in other places I dove but I knew that before coming. The beach is long and sandy, the water is quite clean. But in the water there are grass and smaller rocks, and snorkeling in front of the hotel is nothing spectacular - very few small corals, some fish here and there. The best place to snorkel is around the dock - this is where the fish is waiting to be fed. The Reef hotel - great location, all rooms face the sea. The only downside is food - quite expensive at the hotel and the quality is below average. The waiting staff is mostly good, with some exceptions. Across the road from the hotel, there is a small supermarket and if you are into cooking, you can buy there. Another option, ask at the hotel about their "reef saver" meal plan - it is $56 a day. Though the choice of dishes on the plan is somewhat limited. Overall good relaxing vacation.

Wonderful family trip

30 steps from room to the Carribean. Wide sandy beach that goes on forever. Young teens loved it. Quiet get-away hotel, not for those who want to cruise the bar scene or shop 'til they drop. Dive shop at the hotel. Snorkeling off the beach. Very clean. Friendly staff. Would go there again. Best to have a car to get around. Easy drive from GT. Great restaurants in the area.

Wedding location-

Was a great location for a destination wedding as everyone was looked after. It was optional to have a meal plan or there was a very convenient store across the street and even though we only had the basic room we were able to cook lots of meals. Loved having all the rooms on the beach, so the beach or a shady porch area was right outside the door. It was a long way from the busy area in the Caymans ie 7 mile beach which had its pros and cons. I wouldn't have wanted to be at the resort without a car since it was so far away.

OK, but not that great.

This hotel was pretty average, but there were a few issues. First, the beach is on the wrong side of the hotel unless you are a morning person. In the afternoon if you want to lay on the beach for sun, you have to face your chair away from the beach (what is the point of a view of the ocean if you have to look at the hotel). Then by about 3 pm, the sun goes behind the hotel and most of the beach is shaded. Second, there is a lot of seaweed and debris that washes up on the beach--and in the water, the "sand" can be rocky and hurt your feet. Also, we had a few instances where the maid cleaned the room but forgot to leave something--one time it was bath towels, antoher time it was floor mats. And there was virtually NO WATER PRESSURE in the shower. Lastly, the water smelled bad...and it certainly didn't taste very good. Otherwise, the pool and hot tub were nice, the room was very nice, and the location wasn't too bad--it is away from the business of Georgetown and 7 Mile Beach and you could get scuba diving, sailing, and snorkeling trips booked right on the hotel grounds. One other thought, though. There aren't many good restaurants on this side of the island. Be prepared for a 45 minute drive to dinner most nights, as the food at the hotel is nothing special, and just as expensive as everywhere else.
