Undergoing renovation...

...and so the corridors are strewn with supplies, tools, boilers, mattresses, etc. Contractors are effing and blinding all day as they do work. Parking is utterly inadequate. Best thing about the hotel is the pub next door to which it is attached.

A hidden jewel in the process of renovations.

We chose your hotel based price and on the other reviews. I love 'quirky old things' so the idea of staying in an older hotel with good reviews appealed to me. I asked for the renovated room upgrade and we had a room well away from the elevators on the 2nd floor. The reception area is unique and has great potential. You can see where work is in the process of being done. I love the old stair case and antique feel of the decor. We arrived at 11pm. The receptionist was either tired or having a bad night. No smiles. Sentences were short. She didn't welcome me in any way. But she answered my questions quickly and seemed to know exactly what she was doing. When we arrived on the second floor the elevator doors opened to a construction zone. There was no ceiling on the hallway, drywall stacked against one wall. Electrical wires and junction boxes hanging from the ceiling. You could smell paint and drywall dust. We took a wander down one floor after we were settled in and that level is done and looks great! We found our room and were pleasantly surprised. The Reno in here seemed mostly complete. New furnishings, new paint. New carpet seems to have been laid over old flooring as you can feel unevenness in the floor in the hallway and the room. The room was small, but older hotel rooms tend to be and that didn't bother us at all. A small amount of drywall dust was visible on the floor under one covered vent to the hall, but other then that it was very clean. The bathroom seemed to be in progress as it was painted but the tile needed re-caulking and a new vanity would go a long way in this space. Also, we had a challenge finding the thermostat as it was behind the wardrobe in one corner and very awkward to reach and adjust. The bed was amazingly comfortable. The bedding was very nice, clean and soft. The water pressure and temps were fantastic. The rooms have the original doors, which I liked, but as one previous review had noted, there is a largish gap between the door and the floor, so I took the noise blocking precaution of stuffing my coat there and we had no issues. We slept very well. One other review had noted a parking issue and this was a concern but not a real problem. The customers from several pubs in walking area of the hotel take up the street parking and the hotel lot was full both nights we were there. Our first night we had to park 2 blocks away and that wasn't great. The second night we were able to find street parking right next to the hotel. Customers should note street parking is free at night but is metered starting at 9am Monday to Saturday. So if you are parked on the street someone needs to run down and fill the meter first thing in the morning. If your vacation plans include sleeping in, this could be an issue. Our check out clerk Sunday morning was also lacking in smiles and was efficient but not pleasant. I would recommend that staff receive customer service training. They know their jobs, but they do not leave a pleasant 'first impression' of the staff of the hotel. Having worked front desk and night audit in a few hotels it is imperative that the desk clerk be both knowledgeable AND friendly. No matter what time of day or how late in their shift it is. It makes a huge difference on referral business and repeat customers. All and all I would be happy to stay here again and can't wait to see the hotel once Reno’s are totally done. Classic old hotels like this are wonderful and rare.

Good way to begin a shift

Check in at reception was simple and quick. The room was fairly nice - fresh paint, decent furniture, wall mounted flat screen and a cofortable bed. The bathroom on the other hand was clean but in need of an update. Winston's English pub is right next door and offers about 50 beers on tap as well as decent food. I will stay here again when I return to Saskatoon for a night in the near future.

drunkard's delight

We were thrilled about staying at a historic hotel. The foyer was impressive but it stopped there. Bring ear plugs! We understood our stay on a Sunday night might include a bit of noise (as we were above a pub) BUT we didn't expect the 'bawking' chickens, boisterous shouting or the repetitive slamming of doors throughout the night. Upon a guest's departure, what does it mean when the front desk staff asks "did you have a good stay or did you come in late?" It would seem those coming in late at night are the ones expected to have a "good stay".

A work in progress

I was at a funeral. The outside of the hotel was noisy till about midnight when the bar closed. There was a lot of renovating going on .
