OLD WORLD REDISCOVERED

My arrival was quit late but I was able to get room service to deliver a fresh salad and sandwich around midnight. In the morning I had dinner in the cafe; but fair warning. The standard size room was comfortable and spacious enough for my short stay; but,the leather inlay on my desk was pealing off and the desk itself was very small to conduct business. The internet worked well and cost an additional $12.95. The baseboard in my room was severly chipped and could use a little attention by hotel maintenance. The large closet contained adequate hangers, mini bar, snacks and a very large in-room safe. The bathroom vanity was vintage 60's or 70's. Though the bathroom was luxuriously adorned with marble, the shower could have used a curved shower rod to enlarge the tub area for showering. The bath linens are top of the line as were the bathroom toiletries. This hotel is an elegant old world type of hotel. The public spaces were very elegant; but, this hotel could use a little touch up in the next couple of years.

mixed value

The hotel staff was first rate and the rooms pristine. But the restaurant provided very poor value for money and there were no amenities in the room (coffee machine, etc) that one would expect of a hotel of this stature. The hotel is associated with a very good gym, which is a five minute walk. For me, that was a big plus

Comfortable and Convenient

My wife and I spent 1 nite in Montreal on the way to Quebec City. We selected the Ritz based upon its reputation, and we were very satisfied. Valet parking and check-in went very efficiently, and our room was large and comfortable. Montreal is a great walking town, and the Ritz is convenient to the subway and to downtown sites (although the area appeared to degrade within a few blocks when walking in the opposite direction. We would likely stay here again (and for 2 nites next time

old world charm with great location

The Ritz Carlton in MOntreal is a the grand dame of hotels in the best location in downtown Montreal. However, it is in need of updated renovation as it is getting frayed at the edges. FOr instance the windows cant be opened in my room which forced me to use air-conditioning which I hate. Wonderful bathroom amenities and great internet services. Has a beautiful garden for afternoon tea but the health club could be enhanced. In spite of it all it was a great value and I would definitely stay there again.

Old but a value

On the whole, it was a good value for the money. We got a top floor corner room, a bit on the small side, but comfortable. The furnishings are old, but again, comfortable. The bathroom is small and OLD. The tub did not drain and the hot water pressure was minimal. In fact, the shower pressure was pretty low too. A/C was powerful, but noisy, so we kept it off at night. The walls were thin, as reviewed, but not terribly so. High ceilings; nice crown moldings, separate closet area with minibar and in-room safe inside. Openable windows, which, when the breeze was up, was a refreshing alternative to a/c. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Everyone is perfectly bilingual. There is turn-down service, but note that it arrives at 5PM. Nice chocolates on the tray. There were no dining options available at the hotel, but an abundance just outside. Eggspectation, justly praised in an earlier review, was just down the street; Reuben's, similarly praised, was a bit further away, but walkable. We highly recommend Bonaparte's in Vieux Montreal. Great service, wonderful food, decent prices (even with the bad exchange rate) for an upscale experience. Had a very nice crepes and fondue dinner at Chez Suzette in Vieux Montreal, with an open window overlooking the street. Bustling sidewalks and lots of cars to watch. If you like museums, the location is good. Beaux (Fine) Arts is a block away. Others not too far. Get the combination museum/Metro/bus pass and you're in business. Avoid the Science Museum; nothing there, but the surrounding Quay on the Port and Old Town/Vieux Montreal are excellent. The Anthropology Museum was an interesting surprise; it is built on the actual ruins of the oldest parts of the city, which you visit and walk through (under the building and street). If you're feeling adventurous, Parc Mont Royale is visible from your windows, but it's a pretty hefty hike up that hill. As reviewed, the Metro is a quick and inexpensive way to get around. The closest entrances are in nearby office buildings and hard to find, but once you learn where they are, it is a easy method to visit lots of places. This compensates for the hotel's location away from the tourist areas. We got a bargain price, and it was a good value. But the hotel is on the old side and a bit out of the way. Good to consider if you want to be in that part of town, but you might look at other options if you want to be closer to the tourist areas.

Nightlife just to the west. Vieux Montreal (old city) is a very long walk or a short Metro ride, and has more restaurants than you can shake a stick at, in a variety of styles and price ranges. Don't bother with restaurants on the Quay of the Old Port, just walk a couple of blocks to the old city.

Sagging Bed couldn't be changed

The Ritz Carlton normally evokes an image of luxury. If that's what you have in mind, then keep looking. This is a very old hotel in Montreal. The bathroom is lined in marble, however, it's the old fashioned white marble with gray streaks in it. Very dated. Everything in this room was dated. One disturbing image was when you looked behind the mirror from the shower, you could see a 1 inch gap that showed you the interior of the walls. The worse thing was the king size bed. My wife and I woke up with sore backs every morning until we figured out that there was a terrible sag in the bed. So I called the front desk and asked them to change the mattress. They told me they couldn't do it because housekeeping had gone home. I even volunteered to change the mattress myself, but they said no. So I had to find a pillow in the room and put it under the mattress to offset some of the sag. I couldn't believe this not my job attitude they took. On the plus side, the outdoor restaurant was very nice and the ducks were cute.

The subway is only a couple of blocks away. It's the best way to get around Montreal.
