Great place!
We had a nice time. The hotel was perfectly located for touring around Old Montreal. A short walk to so many places. The Metro (Subway) is very easy to maneuver and is a short walk from the hotel. The staff is very nice and helpful. Will come again.

Pointe-à-Callière Museum was amazing. You go inside and downstairs...you will see remnants of an old building in the basement, a burial ground, and even come out of the place from two blocks away. truly a must see. The light show at Notre-Dame Basilica also a must see.

BAD BAD BAD
A 3 star yes but definetely not a 4 star and not worth the money we spent on the rooms. 1. Not clean and cleaning lady did not take my orange juice cup that I had left from the morning until the next day. 2. Ironing board bad quality and broken fell on my foot. 3. Mattress cheap not the luxury style. 4. Breakfast. self-service! And very little variety. 5. Staff with attitude not friendly at all. 6. Porter watched me as I struggled with my suitcase up the stairs at the entrance and did not bother to help. 7. Rooms very stern and not functional at all/nor practical. 8. Side table wall lamp too far from bed almost fell over turning it off before sleeping. 9. Bathrooms no cotton buds/amenities. 10. They did not turn down the room the first night. 11. Doors of the room slam so you will be woken up at 3 am when people come back from parties. 12. Internet not working in the room as wireless.

Mini road trippers
Everything except the mattress
My husband and I made a mini-road trip from Southern New England to visit Montreal for the first time. (We loved the city.) We booked the most basic room at the hotel and were very happy with the size and cleanliness. The mattress was very very firm. For this reason, we will likely try another hotel when we go back. The decor of the hotel was interesting, dark (literally) but we thought it was fun if a little tired. The things we thought were great about the hotel were 1) the location very easy walking to the waterfront, Notre Dame, etc. 2) breakfast included offered fruit, breads, cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, granola, coffee, and juice: a great deal! We would recommend this hotel ONLY if you enjoy a very, very firm mattress.

An American Tourist
Nice Trendy Place
This was my first trip to Montreal, but I had the benefit of staying at several locations on my trip. Hotel St. Paul's location was convenient for walking to touristy areas in old town (5 minutes to Notre-Dame), without having to be located in such a noisy touristy congested area. Wireless was complementary. The breakfast was pleasant and very nice for being continental and was located in a room pleasantly lit with sunlight from large windows. If you want a 4 star hotel slightly closer to old town, I'd recommend Auberge Bonaparte. Although it is noisier, less trendy and older than Hotel St. Paul, it is around the corner from Notre-Dame and is quite nice.

New Luxury in Old Montreal
The St. Paul was a great hotel experience. I must admit I am a traveler with high expectations and travel quite frequently in the US and Europe. The staff was very polite and helpful. We were traveling via motorcycle from the States and they insisted we park our motorcycle inside the hotel on their loading dock so that the bike would be secure. Also, anytime we had questions about where to tour or eat, they were always willing to offer ideas and showed us on a map where to go to get our destination. The rooms were all white, very modern (no pictures on the wall just a large mirror on the floor) and very clean. The bathroom was very clean (not large but nice with a good shower) and I liked having a mini bar stocked with beverages at all times. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet; we did not have much of a view but the location, being right in Old Montreal was perfect if you want to be in that area. However, Rue Sainte Catherine was a $10 cab fare with tip if you wanted to get near the shopping, restaurants and bars/clubs. There was a trendy bar and restaurant in the St. Paul, we only had drinks but it was a cool place to chill. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in a clean and modern hotel in a great location in Montreal.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
If you like interesting boutiques and fur stores then Old Montreal is perfect. If you like "New York" shopping then Rue Sainte Catherine is the place to go for high end shops and department stores. There are even underground malls in this area.
