Good Overall Experience

The best thing about the Strathcona hotel is its location. It is across the street from the train station, the airport express shuttle, and in close proximity to many restaurants and The PATH (a system of underground walk ways that leads to many of the great sites in the city). The hotel is a little bit older but is currently undergoing a full renovation. My observation of the partially renovated area is that new style will be a very sleek and modern. The hotel is comfortable and the staff were all very helpful and pleasant.

Wonderful hotel location

The Strathcona was excellent, a small, but pleasant room. The closet could have been bigger and since there was no armoire, hanging clothes was difficult. We had to leave some clothes in suitcasees. We had toilet trouble. It would be wise to check toilet function before guests occupy the room. The mattress was hard. I know many people prefer hard mattresses, so, perhaps a hard mattress with a pillow top would be best. Our experience with a housekeeping employee on our first night was a surprisingly excellent experience. She was marvelous and very helpful. The room was quiet. There was adequate room for our luggage. Overall, the staff was courteous and helpful. I would stay at the Strathcona again when we visit toronto next time.

Toronto has great museums and other attractions. If the distances are too long, the public transportation is excellent.

best price for location, small rooms

I was in Toronto for a conference. The Strathcona Hotel was cheap, clean and in an excellent location (walking distance to the convention center). Naturally along with these great perks: small rooms but very clean and new, no breakfast or any amenities for that matter but delicious breakfast buffet in downstairs cafe for $15...there was also some sort of "medical plant" convention going on at the same time and the hotel made a huge deal about the hotel being 100% non-smoking (you have to sign a waiver and all agreeing to this policy) but then the entire hotel smelled of reefer for about 3 days, our whole floor, our room, even whilst eating breakfast it was pouring through the ventilation system!

Perfect location for Air Canada Concert

For the nearby concert we were attending (at Air Canada) it was a good choice. We didn't plan on spending too much time in the room, so we were looking for something affordable and convenient. Perfectly located close to shopping, bars, pretty much everything... it was great. But expect the rooms to be small, and the decor to be outdated. Definitely worth it (for our purposes), just not what is reflected within their website photos.

Excellent location, friendly staff

The Strathcona is definite winner when it comes to location. You're right in the heart of the Financial District and a short walk from attractions like the CN Tower, Hockey Hall of Fame, Yonge Street, and the Harbourfront area, and you're also just across the street from Union Station, one of the major hubs of the subway system and intercity rail connections--plus some of the major bus and streetcar corridor streets are also a short walk away. Rooms are a bit on the smallish side but designed well to use the space pretty effectively, and have a nice clean and modern look. Staff were super friendly and helpful... my reservation actually got lost but the front desk staff were quick to assure I still could get a room at the guaranteed rate, and when the luggage storage area was near full the manager gave up a sizable chunk of his office to accommodate my bags. Housekeeping staff did an impeccable job... I was pleasantly surprised to even find my pajamas nicely folded. About the only negatives I can recall is that it can be a tad noisy--sound insulation both within and from outside isn't the greatest, though it didn't help that I had a ridiculously noisy family across the hall. And don't expect a spectacular view--many of the rooms face a rather bleak inner light-well area, though that probably at least helps a little in cutting down on street noise in the busy surroundings. The TV's are also a bit old, so don't expect to be wowed with HD in this hotel.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

As Toronto is quite spread out, I highly recommend using mass transit, and the Strathcona is conveniently located for this... it's most cost-effective to buy a day pass if you're going to be using the subway or trams more than twice in a day, but the TTC only sells them at collector booths and annoyingly they're often closed (it's not the most modern or efficient system when it comes to payment)--luckily, Union Station just across the street from the hotel has one of the few collector booths that is always reliably manned.

Fantastic location, nice rooms

I was sightseeing in Toronto for 6 days and the hotel's great location made everything very accessible. There was a bus stop for each and every hop on hop off bus in a 3 min. walk distance and union station was just round the corner. the room was nice a and clean, nothing fancy but everything you need is there, the service was good and the concierge was very helpful, The hotel's location on york st south of front st makes it a nice quiet spot but still near everything. The airport express says it stops in front of the hotel but actually it stops in front of the royal york hotel which is round the corner but it's a 2 min walk or more if you have lots of luggage. I recommend it for families, friends or loners!

My review of The Strathcona Hotel

Although the rooms are quite small and the elevator quite slow, we were very pleased with the price, the cleanliness, and the location. The staff was very friendly and helpful, particularly the concierge, who gave us great recommendations for restaurants, evening events and architectural treats in the city.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

The location makes for an easy walk to the waterfront as well as to the theaters and restaurants on King St. and the lovely churches on Church St. Our favorite walks were a bit longer but included the old stone buildings of the University, restaurants of Little Italy, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
