Small rooms, but very clean, great location!

The Strathcona is is light on amenities (no parking, for example), and the few it does have are expensive, but I'd definitely stay there again. My room was a bit small and had no view, and the bed wasn't very comfortable, but everything was recently renovated and extremely clean. Considering the price, the location is unbeatable! You can walk to the lake and the subway is only a block away. The staff is really helpful. Highly recommended.

good value; noise intrusive

7th floor room. 11 day stay. only major complaint extremely loud bang when any door closed in the adjacent hallway. there is a large gap between the floor and bottom of door, no insulation and heavy automatic hinge that shuts door with a bang. other guests seemingly unable to make any effort to gently close doors means forget about sleeping after 6 am.

Good deal for downtown Toronto

Recently renovated and spotless. The room is a little small but space is well utilized. Within walking distance of most of downtown Toronto (across from the Royal York and very close to Union Station). I did not need to take the subway or streetcars and took a cab only once, to get back to the bus station. I knew this hotel from before the facelift and will certainly go back.

Location, location, location

Myself and a friend spent 3 nights in this hotel. While it was annoying that internet service and breakfast were not included, the location of this hotel to attractions and public transit within the city made it an absolute gem! The room was ok, I'm not hard to please and I only used the room to sleep. It did have a lack of electrical outlets, as we had to unplug the room clock to charge our phones and cameras. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Great value for a downtown hotel. Understand though that park will be at on offsite garage. I parked at the Hilton and spent $60 total.

Clean, But...

The approach the cab driver took to the hotel was a little scary. He came in off of a side street into an alley beside the hotel. It was late, cold and rainy, so already this was not leading to a very good first impression. A step back in time is probably the best way to describe the lobby. Not in that Lauren Bacall meets Humphrey kind of way, but rather in a "we want to update this hotel, but don't want to spend the money", sort of way. One would think because it was a Monday when I checked in and absolutely no one in the hotel, I would have been upgraded to a better room than the "Smart" room, which was code for two twin beds in a small room just right for one. The room was clean, but cold and the heating system selection was "off, hot or hotter". I had no choice but to hop up ever so often to adjust the heat. The beds were hard as bricks, but I think they helped my back. The materials used for the "soft renovation" are low quality and already show their wear. I had a New York type of view – my room looked straight into the window of another room. Everything about the hotel and the accommodations are just "adequate". The personnel are nice, but did not over-extend to make my stay a "Wow" experience. Had this not been in an ideal location – within walking distance from so many things – transportation, food, sites, activities, etc., I would have been upset about booking here regardless of the price.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

There is an entrance to the vast underground area a stone's throw away from the front door of the hotel. I would never know it was there had I not thought to ask.

Not worth the price

The location for the Hotel is amazing and there is a lot of stuff to do around. However, the rooms are pretty small and the moments inside the room are completely restricted. Also, there are no tables in case you plan to work. You will ahve to stick to your bed and work sitting on it. Though the hotel charges a lot for the WiFi connection $30 for a week, the connection is pathetic. Is would say a nice place to stay if you are planning to be in the room for sleeping purposes. For working or for business purposes, not recommended at all.

Loved my stay

The Strathcona treated me very well. It is located in Toronto's Financial District. Ronald at the front desk was very courteous and helpful. I had booked a 2 single beds room due to it being the lowest price, but they upgraded me to a room with a queen-sized bed and I wasn't charged extra. The room was smaller than other hotel rooms I've stayed at - this didn't bother me, but it may bother other people. The room was immaculate - no dust anywhere. I didn't need to order room service or eat in the hotel eateries (York St. Cafe and The Pub) because the hotel was close to neighborhoods with good restaurants. Because of budget, I walked everywhere and chose places to eat that cost less than $10 per meal. I went to restaurants on Adelaide St W, King St W, Queen St W, Dundas St W and Front St. There are also many upscale restaurants in the area. I highly recommend purchasing internet because that's how I found places to eat. The internet cost was very inexpensive for my entire stay of 4 nights. A TTC subway station was located very close to the hotel on University Ave and King St W. My trip couldn't have gone any better, and that was largely due to the location of the Strathcona Hotel and the pleasant stay I had there.

There are many inexpensive restaurant/eating options within walking distance of the hotel (walking distance for me is a mile or so). Alternatively, you can take the TTC subway because it's located 1-2 blocks from the hotel.
