Terrible experience

Dirty rooms, vagrants in the lobby, unfriendly desk staff..... I visit Toronto frequently, and this was my worst hotel experience in all the years I've been traveling there.

You get what you pay for

This hotel has a great location, right around the corner from the ROM, lots of upscale shopping (Versace, Calvin Klein), Whole Foods right next door, safe, busy neighborhood (even at 1am on a Monday!) If you plan to only shower and sleep in your room, then this is the place for you. Air conditioning works, and they have clean towels and sheets. Downsides are that it smells pretty old and dingy. Rooms are old and could use some updating. Walls have bubbles everywhere under the worn wallpaper. Our bathroom door did not shut all the way, so did not have total privacy. (Luckily was traveling with a good friend..so was not a big issue for us) Complimentary "breakfast" consists of orange juice, coffee, 2 kinds of muffins and croissants. $15/day to park there on sight. Staff was pretty friendly. Overall, I would go back due solely to the location and the price.

Very Basic, but clean.

Was in town for fanexpo and chose to book here when the con rooms filled up. Staff consisted of various guys more interested in talking on their cells than actually addressing you. Rooms were clean, but have seen better days. Pillows were rock hard. Internet was fast, location is about 3 blocks from the subway. Won't stay here again. Much better places to crash for not much more money.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Free breakfast ends early. Whole Foods less than a block south has a great breakfast, but is very pricey.

Room is dirty, light fixtures broken

We had such a hard time finding this location. Staff was friendly but didn't speak good English. When we entered the room, the floor was still dirty. We turned on the light fixtures, only 1 out of 3 was working. We reserved the room for 3 people but there were only 2 towels in the bathroom. There were no coffee machine in the room. Parking is $15 Canadian. You must deposit $50 for incidental fee up front. This hotel is include a small continental breakfast (small muffins and big croissants, coffee and orange juices). We arrived there at 10:30pm and couldn't find anything to eat, mostly close or only night club was opened so we got a piece of bread from Starbucks after 1/2 hour walk around that area. If you like the Nightlife, this will be your place, if you won't mind the room not totally cleaned, and old, contain some old building smell.

Just ok...

The room was old and outdated. It look like the 80's. Old tv and no ventilation fan in the bathroom. Not trying to be gross, but there was a white liquid substance dried on the head board. Sorry but it needed to be said. The hotel is in a decent location and it's in the city where you can walk everywhere.

Stay in Howard-Johnson, Toronto, ON, Ca

We only slept in the hotel and had breakfasts. The good thing is that they provide simple breakfast. But no drinking water, which is not convenient for families with kids.

upscale Yorkville shopping district

Good desk service courteously allowing for early check-in and slightly late check-out. Breakfast of croissants and muffins, coffee and tea basic but sufficient for price. Reasoonably comfortable room providing suitable home base from which to explore city, but far from luxurious hotel experience.

cheap option in the heart of the city

just stayed for a night. Location is excellent, and the neighborhood quite lively. Price is almost unbeatable, but this comes together with some cons : old-fashioned equipment in the room (and very noisy heater), sheets with stains.

Travel arrangements

I traveled to Toronto due to hospitalization of family member.[...] was aware of my travel purpose and they said that the Howard Johnson was the closest to the hospital for the price I paid. [...] would not tell me how much I was paying per night. I would have stayed at the Chelse Hotel because it was much cheaper due to family hospitalzation (they give a discount for that) and I could have walked to the hospitalization rather than pay expensive taxi transportation from the hotel to Toronto General Hospital. In addition, it is a much nicer hotel.

Downtown TOR

The hotel itself is a little dated, especially the amenities of the rooms. However the price was right and the location is great for the price. It's a block away from the ROM and an easy 5-10 minute drive from the entertainment district.
