Meh... nothing terrible, nothing great
Here's the deal- The English Inn is not in Downtown... its in a suburb of sorts called Esquimalt. It's 5 minutes by car, 20-30 by bus, and about 45 walking. The taxi to downtown will cost you about $10 and the bus is $5 round trip. There are NO places to eat near the hotel. Each is about 6 blocks away and none of them are all that exciting- one is a McDonalds. The hotel's dining room has been closed except for private events and the lounge was open each night... but only serves beverages. The complimentary breakfast is croissants, yogurt, fruit and coffee/tea. And ends by about 10. Meh.The rooms themselves are pretty spacious. But each just needed a little bit more. Because of a weird snafu we saw about 3 rooms over the course of our stay. Each time the bathrooms just... they weren't dirty or anything... but I just really really expected more. Especially for the rates! The entire place is really just in need of some repair and love and such. The main manor and lobby area is gorgeous and what I would expect but the rooms... sort of meh. In one room the window was severely broken and still had residue from the duct tape they tried to use to repair it- turns out the window wasn't even glass, it was plexi. The bed in our first room was amazing. The sheets were great and the bed was incredibly comfortable. It was quiet and peaceful the entire stay. Even though we did have people staying above us.In our second room however, the bed squeaked each time one of us moved... or even tossed a pillow on the bed. It was ridiculous. And each time our upstairs neighbors turned on a faucet or ran the shower the sound of rushing water was nearly overwhelming. You could hear it every where in the room. The staff was good. They went above and beyond in many instances to make our stay pleasant. [...] was fantastic and [...] was the sweetest person ever.As far as the grounds go... I thought many times that it seems like they didn't employ gardeners. The gardens were lovely... but seemed sort of shaggy. There seemed to be weeds everywhere. There was even an artichoke randomly growing in one of the gardens! The internet is only good in the main manor house and SOMETIMES other places on the grounds. But not really.Overall there was nothing BAD but I was expecting more and I left overall disappointed. I really don't think I would stay here again.

Quiet and beautiful
Not a "mobility challenged" friendly hotel, and I don't think I saw that in any of your reviews. We were travelling with my in-laws, age 85 & 83. When we first checked in and were shown our rooms, which were on the third floor, walk up (no elevator) I knew my mother-in-law wasn't going to be able to tackle this. I asked if there was an elevator, or a room on the main level - no to both, but a room was available on the second floor (One flight of stairs) for a $30 up grade. We took this as we felt it was still the best value, the room they upgraded to was much bigger with a King size bed, lovely view, just perfect. A very quiet atmosphere, didn't hear or see the other guest, felt like we were there all by ourselves. The front desk clerk was very accommodating when we went to the lounge after hours for a Liqueur! Thanks! I think we definitely found our new place to stay in Victoria, short drive to downtown. Great!

Peaceful Old World Charm
The hotel is in a residential area and since we had a car for transportation this was not a problem. We drove about 20 minutes to Butchart Gardens and 5-10 minutes to downtown. The breakfast consisted of yogurt, croissants, and fruit. This was a little light for us when we had a busy day ahead. Overall a beautiful and peaceful place to stay.

The English Inn & Resort
The English Inn is very quaint. The grounds are gorgeous and well kept. The room we had was large and had a huge comfortable bed. Now the Bad! The lights flickered at times and the shower was a nightmare with very little water coming from the shower head. The soap was a tiny square less than 2" per side and not replaced during our stay.

Short walk from hotel
The Princess Mary Restaurant served exceptional fare breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had several meals there. It is, however, pricy.

Not as advertised
This is more of a wedding venue than a hotel. Lovely grounds, friendly staff. Dining room is closed, so "no elegant dining." "Breakfast" every day was coffee (in an airpot that was continually running dry) and a croissant. NO butter. No jam. No cheese. Bananas MAYbe. Having to go out for breakfast increased the cost of our stay considerably. Stayed in Carriage House - charming but in disrepair; mold in the bathroom; no screens on the windows; "brick fireplace" was an electric insert in the hearth; instant coffee packets in the room's coffee pot; no shampoo, lotion or other amenities. "Four poster" bed was homemade with boards painted white. Had hope for this place, but would not stay here again.

Romantic atmosphere
I'd like to recommend this hotel to everyone who is seeking for some unique experience. The main building was amazing with nice fire places and renovated lounge with large flat screen TV, you can get fully relaxed, physically or mentally.

Good Relaxing Time
It is a unique hotel experience that you do not get from modern day hotels because of its setting and location. The hotel is not located in congested downtown streets but is situated in an area where you can actually relax. The classic English style manors are well maintained and are similar to those of Shakespearean times. The gardens and scenery is something you will definitely enjoy. Just walk around the grounds and you will feel a sense of calm. The staff is friendly and they are around when you need them. They treated me very well during my stay. The room I stayed at felt like home with a blend of vibrant colours and interesting designs. The rooms were always clean and tidy. The beds were comfortable and comfy. Great vibe and experience made it a good relaxing time.

Loved it
We loved this place! We came to Victoria without a place to stay. We drove around asking prices and checking out hotels and this was fantastic for the price! The room was very clean, looked brand new. The gardens were really pretty and fun to walk through. The bed was SO comfortable, with very comfortable sheets. We had to switch days we had originally planned to stay and the front desk was very helful and accomodating. The croissants in the morning were delicious. If I ever make it back to Victoria I would definately stay here again!

Urban Hideaway
I travel to Victoria once a year because my daughter lives there.Have stayed here and there or camped due to budgeting.Drove through the resort 8 years ago and did not even consider it because I thought it would be far too expensive. To make along story short I booked 4 nights this June and will be back every year till they plant me in their garden.Totally awesome, rooms a bit quaint, but the gardens, animals, birds, etc.more than made up for anything.Went to the Empress just to compare their gardens,They cannot hold a candle to the English Inn.The staff were friendly, the deer were friendly, and the mother racoon with 2 babies we watched one night were sort of friendly.Seems like your not in a city but yet a 5 minute drive takes you to everything downtown.Highly recommend it to anyone who has an apprecation for nature, flowers, and European accomadations.
