I have been wanting to visit Sooke Harbor House for years because of a friend's experience having her wedding there more than 10 years ago.
The inn is located right on the water just north of the town of Sooke, and our room (the Ocean Room) had a
nice view of the water. It was appointed with a fairly comfy queen-sized bed and full bath. Additional amenities included a deep jetted tub on the roomy outdoor deck, which was nicely screened from the adjacent rooms by shrubbery. There was a fireplace, which we didn't use but was a nice touch, and the whole place had a slightly (not unpleasant) fragrance of past fires. There is a small refrigerator in the bathroom, a coffee pot with all the necessaries, and cozy robes and slippers.
The grounds are lovely, landscaped with abundant edible plants, and the property is adjacent to the entrance to Whiffen Spit park, which has a nice walking trail of about a mile out to the end of the spit so that you can walk off a little of the wonderful food from the Inn's kitchen.
Breakfast is included, and delivered to your room. Ours included three different types of baked goods each morning, eggs cooked soft or hard, home made granola, yogurt, and fruit compote. All were very good. But the star was definitely dinner.
Dinner was a three courses, featuring fresh local ingredients, and the dishes varied from great to spectacular. The wine pairings were creative and well described by the sommelier. The dining room has a fantastic view.
We had a great time, and felt that it was a good value, both in terms of lodging and the meal. I would recommend it any time -- don't save it for a special occasion!
Hotel features (5 = best, 1 = worst):
Short walk from hotel
Whiffen Spit park trail is a great walk, right next to the Inn, and a local bakery was selling sandwiches in the parking lot around 11:30am. Grab a sandwich and have a picnic on the beach!
