I must preface my review by saying that I am not a person who needs "amenities." I have a horrible job in America and leave the country once a year so no one can find me. I am not a very good tourist; I would be a much better prisoner of war,
since I don't really like shopping or dining in swank places. Rila Monastery felt more like home to me than the hotel. That being said, the Best Western Thracia --pronounced with a hard "c"--was more than adequate for my minimalist requirements. The staff was helpful and friendly, solicitous to my needs, e.g., post card stamps, setting up trip to Rila. My only beef is that I got charged ten lev for a can of nuts from the mini-bar #a nice one, although I didn't use it#. I paid it, since arguing over what I believe to be $6.60 American is a waste of oxygen. Other than that, everything was more than great. The lobby was painted while I was there, and the painters worked the night shift to get it done: this is a hotel that cares about its appearance.
Hotel features (5 = best, 1 = worst):
Prior to landing in Bulgaria, familiarize yourself with the Cyrillic alphabet or the street signs will look like word jumbles to you.
I've definitely stayed at better hotels (I travel a lot around the world), but the price was low and the hotel was good.
Good location, good hotel, good breakfasts, good staff, good rooms (for this part of Europe).
When I return to Sofia it is
likely I will stay here again.
