Extras extremely overpriced
I stayed at the Sheraton Rio with my wife to celebrate our third anniversary. We booked a "deluxe" room that faces only the sea, avoiding the views to the favelas available at side-facing rooms. The room was as good as expected in a five star hotels. The view was fantastic. The room amenities were poor. The hotel has nice restaurants, good swimming pools and a almost private beach. We enjoyed and relaxed a lot. One bad thing is that the hotel takes advantage of its isolated location to overcharge for any simple consumption. You will pay the price of a expensive sandwich to by a single soft drink. It is really abusive. The service is not bad, but is not good either; you feel they are not even trying. Overall it was good, but you should carefully consider the issues regarding consumption prices and its remote location.

Not Applicable
Bring with you bottles of watter and other things you may need to "survive". Forget about asking for a coffee at the hotel restaurants and bars. Add the cost of the not included breakfast and parking to your budget.

Sheraton Rio
The hotel itself is lovely. The service is the worst I have ever encountered in a major American hotel chain. This is not because it is Rio; we stayed at the InterContinental and Ceasar Park and the service was impeccable. It took an hour and a half to check in: the computers were down and they could not find our [...]booking. My children were three floors away from us, there was a cockroach in my bathroom, we had requested a room with 2 beds and a king and we received 2 rooms with two beds each. Check out took a half an hour and I was double charged because they couldn't tell that we had paid [...]beforehand.

sao coronado sheraton
we had fun here. the pool and direct beach access are very nice. the wait staff, and singers around the pool are very friendly. the service can be slow however. the shallow one foot kid's pool was perfect for my 2yr old son. the location is a plus and minus. it is more in sao coronado than leblon. the access street is one way until 10am during the week, making access in the am a concern (i had to pick up my rental car later, so as to be able to get back directly!) area is very safe, although a cab ride from everything. the seclusion of the beach can be a plus if you want a less hectic experience. the facilities are first rate, and a very nice view from the first floor bar. we ate one meal here which was adequate, though not special. we asked for an iron, and had to sign a contract to return the iron in 40 minutes or pay 50 reals! we could have bought one. we stayed here on the front of our visit, but chose to stay in copa on the tail end. overall excellent facilites, and staff, +/- location.

Overpriced, remote
The hotel is remote from Rio, there are no stores or services nearby therefore you are forced to buy everything in the hotel and fantastic prices. For example, a small pizza costs about 30 US dollars. There is a small beach but the water is rough. If you go to Rio this is not the place to stay!

Great Location and Excellent Views
The Sheraton Rio is probably the best hotel in Leblon, which is likely the best area of Rio to stay in. The rooms were nice, but nothing special. The lobby was very nicely appointed and included workstations with free internet (30 minutes each day) or you could pay $2/hr for internet access. There are 3 restaurants on-site with some variety, but they were all fairly expensive (food in general was expensive in Rio). The pool area was very nice and includes a children's pool next to the adult pool. The pool wait-staff was very attentive and drinks and food readily available. A private beach area was accessible by stairs from the pool area (locked after dark for security) and there were beach chairs and lounge chairs provided. It was a 15 minute walk to Leblon Beach and a bit further to the shops and restaurants of Leblon. There is also a free shopping shuttle to Rio Sul, the largest shopping mall in Rio.

Short drive from hotel
While the hotel is a short walk to the restaurants of Leblon, it's also less than $10 cab ride to almost any restaurant in Ipanema, Arpoador and even Copacabana. For a real Brazilian experience, try the Brasileiro da Gavea (in Gavea) - but bring a translator because they don't speak English or have English menus.
