Overpriced and disappointing.
I had a "Standard" room with no sea view and I knew it at the time I made the reservation. Prepaid and non-refundable for five days. Rio is expensive and the room came close to $ 200 per night (including safe, wifi in the lobby, and breakfast). But my room gave on an inside shaft with a small window, very little light in, and a lot of air conditioning compressors running (for other rooms and the hotel facilities). It was thus noisy and uncomfortable. The room was also very small, perhaps 10 m2 with a bathroom of about 3 m2. I felt claustrophobia staying in the room for more than 30 minutes, except to try to sleep at night. On the positive side, the location of the hotel (just at the end of Copacabana close to Ipanema) is excellent, the shower worked very well, the breakfast was excellent and the lobby was clean and inviting. I requested on my last day to check-out at 7 pm instead of 12 noon; this cost me an additonal $100. In summary: If I go back to Rio again, I will try a different hotel in Copacabana along Avenida Atlantica or pay a little more for a room at Orla with a sea view.

Nice property staffed by robots
I had stayed at this hotel several times between 2001 and 2007. It was never luxurious, but you couldn't beat the location, and it was a reasonable value. My experience this time was distinctly unpleasant. I was never greeted by any hotel staff, except the cleaning ladies, who were top notch. Reception staff started out by refusing to give me the room I had paid for, [...]. After arguing for about 15 minutes with the front desk robot in attendance, he finally gave me a slightly larger room with a lumpy bed facing the street. By the time this pleasant exchange was concluded, there were no bellboys anywhere in sight to help with my luggage. The noise level in the room was about the same as street level in Manhattan. The instruction card next to the bed said to dial 44 to program a wake-up call. There was never any answer at that number. When I called the front desk to complain, I was told to write a message for the management - no "sorry for the inconvenience, our mistake, we will notify management of the problem immediately." The hotel details claim that WIFI is free in guest rooms, but the only free service is throttled down to about dial-up speed. If you want the same WIFI service you normally get for free at 99% of hotels anymore, you have to pay extra. The breakfast buffet, which was marginally decent a few years ago, is now thoroughly mediocre. I came very close to asking them if I could go in the kitchen and teach their staff how to make scrambled eggs. Finally, when I checked out promptly at noon, even though my flight was not till 11pm that night, I asked to be allowed to use the WIFI in the business center so that I could have a productive afternoon. The response was: "sorry but we can't do that since your account is closed, but there is a cyber cafe about 3 blocks away." That's the response I would expect from a Brazilian government bureaucrat, not an alleged "hospitality industry professional." During my entire stay I was never politely greeted by anyone other than the cleaning staff. I was never thanked for staying there. I was never asked how my stay was. I never saw anyone smile. Needless to say, I will not be staying at this property again, and cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone.

Short walk from hotel
Skip the conventional high-priced indoor restaurants. There are several beachfront bars with plenty of outdoor seating, reasonable prices, good food and a great view. Also, for a quick, cheap, healthy and delicious lunch, try one of the local buffets that sell food by weight. "Aipo and Aipim" in particular, is very good, with locations on N.S.Copacabana Ave and on Visconde de Piraja Street in Ipanema.

Rio Vacation Getaway
Check-in process was a but cumbersome[...] Once beyond that delay the desk clerks were cordial but not overly friendly. The room was clean and bed was comfortable. Hot water from the bathroom sink was a trickle compared to the cold water but got hot quickly and was sufficient for shaving and washing hands. The free breakfast was offered everyday but I passed over it based on the long waits to get seated. Simplier and speedier to go elsewhere. The breakfast must have been good because each day had the same wait and at various times I stopped by the resturant.Check-out was speedy with a simple thank you for staying with them. Overall not the kind of hotel I would recommend for the price but if your in search of a basic small room and comfortable bed then worth consideration.

When arriving in Rio at GIG airport go ahead and purchase your taxi fare as you leave the airport. This avoids a gauntlet of people trying to get you to use their services as you comeout from international arrivals. The puchase prie was $90 reals which seemed a bit high but if I had chosen a meter taxi I would have been stuck paying meter rates in traffic that came to a dead stop for serveral miles departing the airpot. My return taxi fare was in a meter taxi but I asked for firm price to get to the airport and was quoted $75 reals - which I felt was a deal - no traffic delays, quick efficient service. The hotel bellman summoned the taxi so arrangements were easy.

Good location for the price
The hotel is in a good location if you want to walk to Impanema (sp?) and is at the end of Copacabana. The staff is very nice and housekeeping is honest. The metro is about four or five blocks away, which you're really better off just paying the $5-7 dollars to take a cab to your destination as its easier and faster. You're only saving two or three dollars by taking the metro. The metro is clean and easy to use. The hotel staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The entry/lobby was very 'european' and modern. The hotel room left a lot to be desired, but was clean and neat. The beds could be nicer, but served their purpose. My room had some problems, the Wi-fi kept going out and the last day the air conditioner developed a buzz rattle. Seeing that it was the last day, wasn't worth bothering with and they did offer to switch my rooms because of the Wi-fi, but they got it fixed before I did so. So, a few things could have been better, and the staff were willing to change my rooms, so I can't really complaining because of my laziness. The breakfast was good with an nice assortment of food, with hot bacon and eggs. Although no potatoes. If you want a nicer hotel, the Sofitel is next door, but if you're just spending time at the beach and sightseeing, this hotel is very good to just drop your bags and a place to put your head, with a good price. If this hotel were more centrally located on Copacabna, I'd stay there again, but its on the 'tip' of the beach, so will probably try something different next time.

While not necessarily a 'money saver', before you leave the Rio airport, prepay for a taxi before you get to the taxi stand. Being safe is worth a few extra dollars. While I never felt unsafe, I didn't attract unneeded or unwanted attention to myself or expose myself to any unsafe situations. Also, at the taxi stand are a row of ATM machines that are safe, and a safe place to take out money. A trick my wife taught me is to put three fingers across the keypad, and press down on one key, while the other two keys have your two fingers on top of them. Even if someone is videotaping or trying to copy your pin, they can't tell which keys you're pressing.
