Just OK

Grotto Bay's water was the best feature. No waves no wakes and the water was very clear. Each day spent by the water was relaxing however, the beach is small and you had to get there early for use of a chaise. Mattresses were bad; pillows were worse. Our ocean front view was blocked by a large palm tree so our view was the bridge to the airport (with some water). Roosters/hens/chicks everywhere which we did not know so the crowing starting at 4 am was funny the first morning but not after that. People at Grotto Bay were very nice. Daily free tea @ 3:30 ea day was a favorite (great scones). Everything was very expensive... A glass of soda by the water/pool was $3. Everything had a 17% gratuity add ed which supported all staff. We didn't know this before arrival. Because Grotto is so close to the airport, don't waste your money on a shuttle service to/from the airport. A taxi or the bus system would be just fine. Bus tickets were a good purchase! We became pro's at that. Take the 10 or 11 for quicker trips into Hamilton. A ride on the 7 to the Dockyard was breathtaking. Stop at Horseshoe Bay for the pink beach!

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

Any real shopping was in the city of Hamilton. From Grotto Bay by bus was a minimum of 30 minutes. Everything we read made Hamton seem only "minutes away". We never knew that for shopping etc most everything shut down by 6 pm and only the Dockyard shopping was open on Sundays. Shopping at the Dockyard was NOT worth the trip. The Dockyard was a big disappointment altogether.

Red Roof Inn with a great view

Bermuda was great and exceeded our expectations. Grotto Bay was most convenient to the airport, perhaps 5 mins. away. I paid for deluxe room for the view, and it was worth it. However, I thought every room had an awesome view of the bay. The beach was small, quiet, but adequate for tanning. We did not pay for all-inclusive meals because we wanted to eat in other locations. It was cheaper to do so. Grotto Bay appeared safe. I could not sleep one night and went for a 3am walk. It was OK. No one was awake, not even the front desk guy. There are roosters present. They begin their noise at 5 or 6am and it could be annoying to some people. The rooms are adequate size and bed is very comfortable. We had ants and no one responded. Others also complained of ants. That was very disturbing. Activities are sparse. For 5 nights only one night was there dancing at poolside. Management really needs to improve in this area. Public transportation is the best way to go. Buy all-day passes for $12 each which also includes all ferry excursions. Be sure to take bus to St. George and take ferry to the naval stockyard. The 45 min. trip is awesome! The naval museum at the stockyard was tremendous. It is air-conditioned and lots of history. The people of Bermuda of the friendliest, kindest, warmest people I have ever met. The island is clean and the people are very integrated, unlike many of the Carribean islands. In summary, although I am somewhat critical of Grotto Bay due to the ants and roosters, I found it very romantic. I would recommend it for honeymooners.

No way would I rent a motor scooter! Roads are narrow, lots of curves, and fellow scooters take too many chances when passing each other. I witnessed a scooter accident. Purchase all-day bus pass.

A nice place

The location is great and the beaches are prefect. We had a great time but the hotel/ resort nickel and dime us to death. Pay for everything that is used or expected. Example, coffee in the morning time must walk to main lobby in the dinning area and each cup runs around 2.50 each. Noodles in the water for us or kids runs $10 for the morning. Again, great place but cheap as it gets.

decent

Not a bad stay. No early check in. They even made us wait 10 minutes after the check in time before we got a key. The hotel is close to the airport but nothing else really. It's about a 30 min bus ride into the town of Hamilton. Room was clean. Food was decent.

Just OK

When they say you get what you pay for....It's true. Very clean, nice staff. The beach was tiny, the pictures are over rated. The cave is small but neat to see. The food was not great so glad we didn't get the meal package. You can eat down the block at Swizzle for less money and the food was great. For the money it was nice. Take the bus and not a cab or rent a scooter. Tom Moore Inn is over rated and very pricey so choose something in Hamilton for that one special dinner.

Take the bus or rent a scooter. From the airport the cab is $10 with tip. The bus would have been $2.50 to Grotto Bay. Ask the airport to sell you a token it's a 5 min drive to the airport.

so so

The views are pretty and the staff were friendly... however, grotto bay could have been better. Beach is quite small, as is the jacuzzi.... pool wasn't heated. Rooms smelled a bit dingy. Not much to do! Especially in the winter when the weather is so unpredictable and everything seems to close so early... this is problematic all around Bermuda, but at least the Hotel could have supplemented with activities and amenities... overall, enjoyable experience, but prob wont' be going back.

convenient getaway.

Good hotel and good facilities. Very close to the airport allows one more time to enjoy the island. BUT food service VERY SLOW- urgently needs more staff- we waited 45 minutes at the Bar to get 2 salads.

beautiful views!

Great ocean views from anywhere on the resort. Nice architecture - big large window in the main building - makes you want to sit and enjoy the view all day! Employees were great (even sang happy birthday in the restaurant that night), everyone goes out of their way to help you out. Pool is open 7/24 and you are 10 seconds from the ocean and the beach, also it has a very cool "grotto" cave - which you can visit and swim in ... it has incredible turuquoise blue water (makes a great memory shot of your visit)

Clean, inviting, and great grounds!

Overall, I enjoyed my stay. The beach onsite is clean and well maintained. The room view was wonderful, although the room itself needs some updating, but clean and spacious. The pool bar & grill was closed while I was there, and the climb up the stairs to the main house is definitely a work out! But, for me I enjoyed the extra exercise. the cave on site is great, & much better than the Crystal caves down the st. Location is close to airport, good for short trips, but I needed to take many long bus rides to get to the beautiful beaches on the west end, and 1/2 hr bus ride to hamilton. It is a little far away from everything. The prices for food and drink are very steep, so either opt for all-inclusive, or go to hamilton supermarket and buy snacks & sandwiches. Although it was tasty. Don't bother w internet, is pricey and dosen't work in the room. All in all, will probably return if visiting Bermuda for short time and want to be close to airport.

Great location

Grotto Bay provided a great location as it was close to airport for arrivals and departure as well as St George. Bus line was right across the street which took you anywhere on the island. Staff was friendly and helpful the only negatives were the bar service at hotel was slow and they didn't open pool bar even though the hotel was full. Rooms and views were great and I would definetely look at staying again if returning to Bermuda.
