winter break

The hotel property is very nice. The caves are amazing. There is a small beach. The pool and surrounding area is very nice. The pool water is very cold but the hot tub is close by. There are plenty of towels. There are games to play on the grassy areas and tennis courts. There are many, many stairs so this would not be a suitable location for families with young children or anyone who is not fit enough to climb steps. The rooms are very basic but adequate. There is a half size fridge in the room. The restaurants are expensive but no more so than the rest of Bermuda. The staff were delightful and always helpful.

The bus service in Bermuda (which also includes the ferries) is excellent. When changing buses you can ask for a transfer so you do not have to keep paying each time you change bus routes.

Fanbulous Resort

The hotel has gorgeous views, its own natural cave, pool, spa, fitness center, very friendly staff, etc., basically everything we expect from a tropical resort! It is close to the airport and crystal and fantasy caves.

Great Grotto

First off, proximity to airport was amazing. Less than 5 minutes by taxi and only $8 plus tip. Bus stop also right in front of hotel. Unbelievably convenient to both St George's and Hamilton and the rest of the island. Crystal and Fantasy Caves are only a short 10 minute walk. The Swizzle Inn, the perfect place off the resort, is also just a 5 minute walk. The setting at Grotto Bay, starting with the approach and the Lobby, was breathtaking. The rooms were large and clean and completely acceptable as expected. Nothing fancy, just as expected. The views from the room and the grounds were fabulous. The mini caves on the grounds were also a big plus. Massage in Prospero's Cave highly recommended. I would return here again in a second Too many pluses not to consider. And the guest services manager, [...], was fabulous. Now for the down side. It was off season and some of the hotel ammenities were not available, such as the dock side bar and grille. Would have been much better had this been operational. Another downside was the bar in the main building, or lack of it. The bar area had no atmosphere at all, which was really ashame considering how warm and cozy the lobby was. It seemed to be simply a vehicle to shuttle drinks to and from restaurant goers. And the bartenders were either overburdened or indifferent. It was hard to tell which, but the wait time for drinks and bar food seemed extremely long. A disappointment but not enough to detract from the fabulous time we had. And all of this was in spite of gail force winds up to 75 miles per hour for two straight days, which would have put a damper on anyone's vacation. We still had a great time at Grotto Bay and that is saying something.

article from bermuda gazette

Tourist stabbed, robbed in his hotel room Published Oct 18, 2010 at 12:00 am (Updated Dec 10, 2010) ShareThis A 60-year-old American tourist was stabbed and his wife hit in the head during an armed robbery at the Grotto Bay resort yesterday. A second robbery at The Wharf executive suites also put a 28-year-old Australian visitor in hospital. The news sparked condolences from the Premier, and fears from the Opposition that others may be put off coming to Bermuda. However, Grotto Bay manager JP Martens said the injured couple are recovering well, and have vowed to return. According to a Police spokesman, officers were alerted to the incident at Grotto Bay, in Hamilton Parish, at 5.10 a.m. "It appears that an unknown man brandishing a bladed article and a blunt object gained entry into a guest room at the premises," he explained. "The intruder demanded money from the occupants and made good his escape with a quantity of cash. "The victims, a 60-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman who are husband and wife, were injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment." The husband remained in hospital last night, but his wife had been discharged. Mr. Martens visited the hospital and had dinner with the couple, who are from New Jersey and on their third vacation in Bermuda. "I dropped off his favourite meal of shrimp cocktail, filet mignon and cheesecake. He's a repeat guest who's doing very well and is impressed by the warmth of the people of Bermuda," he reported. Mr. Martens declined to go into details about how the robbery occurred, since it is the subject of an active Police investigation. However, he confirmed the man was stabbed and his wife hit in the head. "He's in absolutely fantastic spirits. He looks great," said Mr. Martens yesterday evening. "They're definitely returning to Grotto Bay next year. They're really good people and we're sorry this happened." The news prompted Premier and Minister of Tourism Ewart Brown to say: "This is most unfortunate. We have word that the victim has had successful surgery and is in stable condition. Our Bermuda Department of Tourism staff have been in touch with his wife and have extended the best wishes of the Government and the people of Bermuda. "These were terrible and unfortunate incidents. And I join with residents in condemning such cowardly acts. I'm confident that the Bermuda Police Service is devoting all the necessary resources to apprehend those responsible." Minutes before the alarm was raised at Grotto Bay, Police were alerted to the robbery at The Wharf suites in Paget. The Police spokesman said: "It appears that around 4 a.m. an unknown man gained entry into a guest room at the premises. "The intruder demanded money from the occupant and made good his escape with a quantity of cash. The victim, a 28-year-old Australian man, was injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment." According to a hospital spokeswoman, he had been released by yesterday evening. The Police spokesman declined to specify what type of injury the man received. Meanwhile the duty manager at The Wharf declined to discuss the matter, and general manager Carol Woods could not be reached for comment. The culprit is described as a dark-skinned man of slim build, approximately 5'8" tall. Meanwhile, the culprit in the Grotto Bay attack is described as a six-foot tall man wearing a black hat. Asked if the two robberies were connected, the Police spokesman replied: "At this point the Police have not ruled out anything, including the possibility they may be linked." Reacting to the news last night, Shadow Tourism Minister Michael Dunkley said: "My colleagues and I continue to be most disturbed and concerned with the alarming trends of crime experienced by the Island over the past few years." He said the United Bermuda Party wanted to bring in aggressive measures at the last election to deal with public safety, plus rehabilitation and social problems. "Sadly,...

Grotto Bay Resort Bermuda

The resort was well kept and clean. The room was clean and furbished nicely. Maid service was always on time and thorough. We we're upgraded to a better room without even asking as a courtesy of availability.

We ate at the Swizzle Inn which is approximately an 1/4 of a mile walk from the resort cheap and delicious. Even the locals eat here!

still good

Have stayed here many times as a pilot on business. First time with my wife. Very friendly staff from porters to Manager. Great views even from the cheap rooms. Interesting grounds - the grottos really make this place special. Short walk to the famous Swizzle Inn. Close to the airport. Easy bus access to St. Georges or Hamilton. Good coffee. Chickens.

Bear to your right after the Swizzle if you want to buy your own at the market. Drink is not cheap here. Get a bus pass and roam around the island with the locals.

Been there, done that...still love it.

The Grotto Bay Beach hotel has been my favorite for years. Perched on a cliff facing the water you can't go wrong for your money. They have an excellent restaurant on premise and the famous Swizzle Inn is only a short walk down the road. At the end of the main drive there are scooter rentals. One is right next to an Esso station that carries wine and some tasty local bakery goods. A private beach, pool, hot tub, tennis court and SCUBA diving facilities make this the ideal getaway. Our last visit was mid November where the temp was in the low 70's during the day with no humidity.

Really nice resort, friendly staff!

Five minutes from the airport ($6.00 by taxi) yet very secluded. Nice beach, 5 star PADI dive center on site. Exceptionally friendly staff, clean and comfortable room. Enjoyed the grounds, well maintained and clean. The breakfast selection was a bit sparse but adequate. We used public transport (buses & ferry) which are cheap, frequent and very easy to get around. We definately want to go again but would probably go a couple of weeks earlier in the year to catch more of the tourist things open.
