- Throughout the duration of the First World Wart the city was surrounded by German troops on tree borders. This arc of Germans was called Ypres Salient by the British defenders. The Germans failed to conquer the city, their crusade lasted only a few days. Despite a number of large-scale battles that cost the lives of 500.000 soldiers, Ieper remained dominated by the British liberators. This past makes Ieper to this day a historical renowned place. For many, Ieper is the centre of commemoration of the First World War. The fields surrounding the city are covered with more than 170, well maintained cemeteries.
