Perfect Location & excellent staff

Great location, great staff, very helpful. Our first room was very nice, but I would consider an upgrade on the room. Our first - standard - room had a terrible bed (according to my back), but the staff was very accommodating on upgrading to a room that had a much better bed. The location was great - 1 block from the bell tower (Belfort) and St. Baafs. 2 block from the castle/fort. Right in the heart of the center city. Close to lots of shops and restaurants.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Out the front and one long block to the right and then right at the first street is a restaurant named Wally's. Good selection of food, reasonable prices, and English menu. On the plaza by St. Baafs and the bell tower is The Bridge restaurant. English menu, great food, reasonable prices. In general if you enjoy stews, don't miss the wateroozi (with chicken).

Unbeatable for the price we got

We only spent a night in Ghent, arriving around 10 am. They did find a room for us in spite of our early arrival. The room itself and the bathroom were large and generally clean though there were some old stains on the carpet. The hotel is right in the center, close to everything touristic. There is even a supermarket across from the hotel. [...]we would definitely recommend this hotel if you can get a good price for it. Be aware though that the parking fee is 15 euros PER night. Also be aware that in Ghent you need very good shoes. The pavements are very irregular, and the downtown area is very dusty because of the archeological digs that are going on in the main square.

cool modernism amid medieval town center

We selected the NH Gent Belfort Hotel because we had planned to spend only 1 night in Ghent and didn't want to waste time getting to and from the main tourist sites. The location can't be surpassed. The hotel is situated directly across the street from Ghent's Stadhuis (City Hall) and just a short walk away from the belfort (bell tower), 3 large cathedrals, the citadel, and much of the medieval area. We arrived toward the end of July at the conclusion of an annual 10-day street fair with the streets of the entire town center closed for food stalls, music and amusement park rides and games. Thousands of people filled the streets. The night we were there, a procession of people in Renaissance costumes, some playing coronets and drums, wound its way to the citadel along Hoogstraat, Ghent's main street directly in front of the hotel, in a reenactment of one of the most important moments in city's history. Despite all the street noise, our room was quiet since the windows were acoustically insulated. The room was also well insulated because there was quite a bit of activity and music within the hotel due to the festival yet we could not hear any of it once the door to our room was closed. The room was very nicely furnished with comfortable beds, extra pillows and blankets, coffee/tea service, and modern lighting and furniture with a strong green color palette. The bathroom was well appointed with sleek fixtures and generously sized towels. The lobby area was spacious with a small reading room and large dining room adjacent. A bar was set up outside the hotel entrance - if you don't mind euro-pop music blaring from overhead speakers, it can be very enjoyable getting a drink while watching the world go by. A business center is also in the hotel and I was given 15 free minutes of internet time which was all I needed. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Ghent.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

St. Baafskathedraal houses Jan Van Eyck's "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" triptych, one of Belgium's finest artistic treasures. Unfortunately, the painting is undergoing conservation analysis for the rest of 2010 and well into 2011 and is only visible from a distance through a window as conservators work on it. However, the church still charges tourists 4 euros/person for the privilege of seeing a reproduction about 1/3 the size of the original. Caveat emptor. Hopefully, you can console yourself that your money is contributing to the painting's preservation.

About as central a location as possible!

While it feels more of a business hotel, there's nothing that should prevent tourists (like us) staying there. Very modern and clean rooms, and superb location.

Great hotel, Great location

Great hotel with plenty of amenities. Extremely comfortable beds and within short walking distance to all major attractions and dining. The only minor downfall was hardwood floors which wouldn't have been a problem but for noisy upstairs neighbors at 1am.

Great location

We got the handicapped room by default and did not find it clean... was disappointing we weren't able to get a different room....There was a terrible odor in the bathroom that never went away...probably had to do with the facilities.... put a damper on an otherwise nice hotel with great location and bar...
