Great location for a stay in Brussels

Our first impression was rough, since we got off a train in the evening while it was raining and wandered around getting soaked while struggling to find our hotel, which is tucked into a little corner of the Sablon district. However, it was worth it once we got there. The hotel is in the perfect spot, can easily walk to the grand square in 5 minutes, right next to a fabulous cathedral and all the museums, and within a stone's throw of about 500 chocolatiers. It stays quiet at night since it is far enough away from the bars and clubs. Unfortunately, we happened to be there during construction across the street, where a large blue crane started to work at 8 AM on Saturday and 9 AM on Sunday (yep, Sunday!) right outside our window. Can't blame the hotel for that. Our room was a bit on the small side, and the hotel was pretty no-frills, but we didn't spend much time in the room anyways.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Go out the front door and walk any direction and you will hit something amazing. Brussels is really a neat city, where pretty much every way you go you will find some neat old building or an amazing square or shop.

Nice but noisy

It took us a while to find the hotel from the train station, although it was very close. Turns out that Brussels is pretty confusing. The location of this hotel was great, right next to the multitude of chocolate shops, a couple blocks from the historic center with all the great restaurants and bars, a block from all the museums. Our room itself was comfortable enough, although they could only get my wife and I the room with two beds squished together. Their 'gym' was basically two exercise machines and a boflex, not even worth advertising. The room was also extremely noisy in the morning, where at 8 AM (on a Saturday!) a huge crane started doing construction right outside, not very nice if you have had a few trappist beers the night before.

Exe Sablon

Hotel and staff were very pleasant. Unfortunately no coffee in the room as expected. Air conditioning didn't work (a warmish spring day) and they tried several times to fix it. Later someone admitted that the whole system was down. They also reported that it wasn't June yet so no AC anyway. Handy to station, museums, and older part of city. Be careful with cab as there is another hotel nearby called Sablon so give exact address.

Great place to stay in Brussels

This hotel is in a nice, quiet neighborhood, close to major sites and transportation (Gare Centrale, tramstops, etc.). The staff is curtious and pleasant. The rooms are clean. The breakfast is a little expensive, but plentiful. What makes it difficult to find is that the address is given in either French or Flemish, sometimes both: it is confusing.

Exactly what I wanted

The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because some of the furniture and the carpet was a bit old and beat up -- something that I don't mind personally but which may take away from someone else's experience. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I asked for a food item to be microwaved and they brought it back to me on a nice plate with silverware. The location is fabulous - you are a very short walk to chocolate shops, museums and great restaurants. I knew ahead of time that the hotel itself is a little tricky to find, so I studied the map well enough that I found it very easily. Bed is super comfy. I will surely stay here again should I be so lucky to be in Brussels.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There's a little hole in the wall convenience store up Rue de Sablons (turn left at the corner of the intersection where all the shops are) up about 2 blocks on the right side of the road. You can get great Belgian chocolate candy bars and other snacks and goodies for a very good price.

Great stay

The staff was really pleasant and helpful - for example, I bought a snack that needed to be heated up and he (I think his name was Fernando) graciously ran back to the kitchen, and in moments my snack was presented to me warmed on a plate with fork, knife and napkin. The room was comfortable and clean and the hotel is very conveniently located to a nice neighborhood with restaurants, chocolate shops and walking distance to great museums. The only reason I held back a star is because the furnishings (carpet, tv, chair) were a bit old and beat up and could use updating. I personally don't mind but some people might. I would definitely stay there again!

Acceptable for a weekend

Very near Central Station but a challenge to find (even locals had a difficult time placing it), and even more of a challenge to get to when carrying heavy luggage, as it requires going down a set of stairs from one street level to the next, then up a hill and around back to the hotel. Not inconvenient to Grand Place but a bit of a walk. Hotel staff was cooly cordial, which appears to be the norm in Brussels. The room itself was clean but we were very surprised to find that the double bed we were supposed to have was merely two twin beds pushed together; for that reason alone I will look for something else next time I vist Brussels. Free internet was nice.
