Barbados resort on St. James Beach with swimming pool and entertainment
Discovery Bay by Rex Resorts is situated on four-and-a-half acres of tropical gardens on St. James Beach in the heart of Barbados' fashionable west coast. Charming plantation-style houses feature 88 guest rooms on either European (room-only) or all-inclusive plans. This relaxed resort welcomes singles, couples and families, accommodating special events with acclaimed Caribbean kindness. A typical day at Discovery Bay by Rex Resorts is spent at the beach, the pool and any one of four on-site bars and restaurants.
Highlights
  • Babysitting available (fees apply)
  • Romantic candlelit dinners in beachfront cabanas
  • Live bands, cultural shows, limbo and steel bands
  • Authentic Bajan cuisine in the Garden Restaurant
  • Outdoor swimming pool
Rooms
Discovery Bay by Rex Resorts guest rooms include a balcony or terrace, air conditioning, cable TV, in-room coffee and tea service, and hairdryer. Garden and sea views are available.
Dining
Four on-site bars and restaurants provide plenty of options for patrons of Discovery Bay by Rex Resorts. The recently opened Aquarium outdoor seafood grill restaurant is available by reservation only, so be sure to stop by early to get on the list. While this casual-trendy beachside restaurant is not included in the all-inclusive plan, a $30 credit is provided for all-inclusive guests. Room service also is available (fees apply).

The local Ragamuffins Bar & Restaurant attempts to lure customers with the promise that they could win a million dollars - a promise they admit is a "transparent ploy" to get tourists to visit. It's all in good fun, which is the theme of this cozy, laid-back bar that hosts a drag show on Sunday nights.
Recreation

Deep sea fishing, sailing, parasailing, waterskiing, snorkeling, scuba diving and massage treatments are available at Discovery Bay by Rex Resorts (fees apply). The resort also features an outdoor swimming pool and tennis court.

Nearby Folkestone Marine Park is a family favorite, with an aquarium, inshore snorkeling trail, interpretive center and picnic grounds.

Paid all inclusive but didn't receive it

Staff not trained in solving problems...we paid all inclusive but were given room only....we spent 1st 2 days complaining on phone which cost us money and time we should have been on beach. We escalated the problem till finally we had the Ops Manager give us 2 meals a day from the 2nd week but no drinks or lunch. The holiday cost us a fortune in additional expenses for meals and drinks and no-one cared, least of all the MD in the UK and the Indian call centres just didnt undertsand us.Nightmare start to holiday. Some staff helped but no process to help is in place.

Beloved getaway

Discovery Bay is beloved by many who return year after year. It is very British (which we loved, as Americans) but it is not everyone's cup of tea. Those guests who return all love the laid-back atmosphere including the slightly worn feeling of the place, the conviviality of the other guests, the great value for the money, the super location and the great beach. I have stayed here before and plan to return next year.

Think twice

The Discovery Bay was not what I was expecting. We checked in after the designated arrival time however our room was not ready. We later found out the room was not ready because they were doing touch up painting in the room. The paint was still wet when we entered the room. In addition, the room (and patio) were flooded. We requested another room and moved that night. Our second room also had large amounts of water on the patio. The one bright spot was the food service and staff. We thought the food was excellent. They had live music several nights during the week. We stayed in this location because of discounts and the location on the West Coast. Yes, it was walking distance to Holetown but so are other places. We've stayed nicer places in the past. Next time I'll cough up more money to stay elsewhere.
