Nice Hotel, but Very Expensive

The Atlantis Reef was a nice hotel at about the level of the MGM Signature in Las Vegas. However, the hotel was about 4 times more expensive than the Signature. Security in the Hotel was oppressive. Security personnel wanted to see the hotel key before entering the elevator. Food was very expensive. Hamburger and Fries by the pool was $30. Buffet dinner was $80. Two Pizzas was $84. The only halfway reasonable food was Starbucks at $10 for a Latte & a muffin.

The Reef

This is an expensive hotel. The hotel did not seem near full, yet when I first arrived I was given a room backing the elevators. I refused the room, and was graciously "upgraded". The upgrade was a higher floor, but nothing different other than it didn't back on the elevators. Instead, it overlooked some processing and the staff parking lot, although I could see the harbor beyond. The rooms are designed beautifully, with placement of furniture and fixtures well-planned. The bathroom rivaled some of the nicest I've seen. The room was designed as a studio, and the availability of dishes, flatware, the fridge and appliances was very nice and particularly useful in the morning. The property, pool and beach are lovely. Services at the pool and beach were excellent. I travel fairly extensively and stay in a range of hotels, from business suites to 5star. The housekeeping with regard to the room, although clean, was not thorough. There should have been robes and slippers in the room. There were not until I called. I used the coffee maker, and it was not checked and cleaned for the next day, although the coffee itself was replaced so there was realization that it had been used. These are simple things that I find handled universally at other hotels, so for approximately $660 per night (including housekeeping fees), I find this surprising. Additionally, I met someone at the resort and we did not book any dinners before arriving. As a result, we found that we had limited choices as to what was available when. We were told that people book in advance. If I want to be on a tight schedule or have inflexibility for reservations in choice restaurants I can stay in NYC. This is suppose to be stress free. Finally, the staff was totally inflexible about helping to print a boarding pass for departure travel. They told me I could go to another hotel within the Atlantis complex and pay a fee, or the library however if I did not get there in 5 minutes it would be closed. I have not stayed at any other hotel, including 5 star, where I found such inflexibility on that issue. There were 3 people at the desk unoccupied. Whether it is easy to get at the airport or not is irrelevant in this day and age of preprinted boarding passes as the norm.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Study and reserve in advance if you want choices. Of course, I find that takes some of the relaxation away since it puts the guest on a schedule.
