In the middle of the 19th century, the Ringstrasse, built and planned as a Boulevard, finalized with the part of the Opernring, filled the gap between the Altstadt (Old City) and Wienfluss (Creek of Vienna). This architecture had created quite some differences of opinions. The conflict between historical architecture and the rational modern was part of the critic, mentioned as well by the famous Art Deco architect Otto Wagner. The first building of this kind was build 1859 at the Opernring 1-5. As a block building, this was quite in a contrast to the overall appearance of the Old City. Primarily, it should acknowledge and represent the wealthy people in contrast to the emperor and royalties. Therefore, wealthy industrials have built themselves a monument and went somehow in competition with the Royals. Because of the short distance between the hotel to the Hofburg Palace, plus important traffic lines and streets, the location was ideal for the high society and their appearance in public. The Viennese State Opera House found here its place. At that time a rather modest build city-house at the Opernring 11 was constructed. This was at the end of the Art Deco period in 1912/13. The architect at this time was Ludwig Mueller, student of Otto Wagner, and Leopold Roth, who at that time created quite some advanced iron-concrete constructions, developing a moderate modern expression and impressed with individual plastic ornaments. In 1920, the Cafe Sacher was located at the ground floor of the hotel with impressive arcades at the mezzanine, where today a renovated mosaic still remembers of that time. Since 1925 the Hotel is privately owned. The owners have always tried to keep the elements of the Art Deco time. In particular you can see it at the staircases, the black and white tiles on the different floors and at the front of the house. The 3rd Floor, Beletage, which was used at that time as the reception-hall for celebrities and important people, is functioning today as the breakfast room for our guests. At the 20th century, our building was classified as an historic monument, which in one way saves the old substance, but also makes any new constructional changes or adjustments to the building nearly impossible. For this reason we kept the original architecture and construction of the hotel staircase, which at the same time is the frame of a rather small elevator. It is also the main reason that not all our rooms are equipped with air-condition, but we will gladly assist you with ventilators at request. The Ringstrasse as the name already says, goes around the inner city like a ring. Because of the traffic during the night we have installed soundproof windows. Still, we cannot guarantee you absolute silence. The utmost we can do, is to offer you a room on the higher floors or some of the rooms facing to the inner yard. As a City Hotel, we approach mainly city and business travelers and therefore we are not equipped with a wellness or any sport facilities. We will gladly provide you with necessary information about any of these in our area, if requested. For your relaxation we can offer you our mobile massage service. We are a declared NON SMOKING - HOTEL, as we are certain, that you rather prefer to stay in a fresh smelling room, than in a smoky one. Therefore, we ask you not to smoke in the room, but have placed for your convenience at the Hotel entrance an ashtray. The restaurant SAID THE BUTCHER TO THE COW is located in the ground floor of the Hotel. A modern concept that attracts with delicious burgers, gin from all over the world and juicy cheesecakes. Furthermore, we also have the Nightclub PLATZHIRSCH, where celebrities of Vienna and others meet. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday it also operates as a disco. Our hotel guests will receive VIP status in this club.

Great location, walking distance to everything.

Nice hotel, friendly staff. Old and needs need carpets. Funny smell in bathroom I think they have aproblem with sewage. This smell was partly diguised with strong airfresheners. Wifi worked well, no extra costs. Liked the breakfast and the breakfast room. It was airy and bright with nice food.

Great location, classy hotel!

We stayed 3 nights at a Junior Suite. The location is fantastic, just opposite to Staatsoper, the Opera Building. Also a few steps to the bus station, tram station and U-Bahn. Very close to all touristic attractions. The staff are friendly. Room comfort is also great. Enjoyed our free drink at Martinjak. Highly reccomended!

Good Value, central location

Right in the center, parking in the vicinity is likely, but not guaranteed and may be a problem during busy tourist season. Presently being remodeled, which is taking away a view of the Opera House.

We started off horribly but,

We arrived late and we were given a room on the second floor of the hotel that didn't have air-conditioning and only a cheap, noisy fan to cool the room. The next morning I had to argue intensively with the manager and tell him in no uncertain terms that this room was unacceptable. He gave me every possible excuse; it's an old building, we jcan't do any construction, many buildings in Vienna don't have air conditioning. In the end I got a very nice room on an air-conditioned floor. This is a beautiful old hotel near every possible site you might want to visit but make sure that they don't put you on the second floor. This hotel has the best soundproofing I have seen in a long time. Also, the staff is very helpful with directions and suggestions.

Outstanding service

We could not be happier choosing to stay at this hotel. We travel (for leisure) extensively and the staff here was the best that we encountered. Sometimes, there is hit and miss with hotel staff, but at this hotel every employee was so courteous, helpful and friendly. We felt that they went above and beyond to take care of our needs, but it was just how they worked at this hotel. We got spoiled with their service. The breakfast buffet, included with our hotel stay, was excellent with everything we want and more. The hotel is centrally located. There are many cafes, shops and things to see around the hotel. We walked everywhere, to the left of the hotel one day, to the right the another day. All were beatiful!! Vienna is safe to walk, even at night. We explored most of the city on foot as everything was just a short walk away.

Wonderful location!

The hotel is located directly across from the State Opera and the city center- many shops, restaurants, and easy to get around the rest of the city. Hotel staff was wonderful, free breakfast was divine, and room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. I definitely recommend this place!

Such a nice stay

My girlfriend and I stayed here. We were welcomed by an incredibly sweet man. He gave us our key which we had to keep at the front desk. The room was pleasantly funky (faux wood curtains), very spacious, and cozy. Excellent breakfast in the morning! Across the street from the Opera!
