Overview

Salzburg sits like a baroque jewel on the banks of the river Salzach, at the northern boundary of the Alps. Shaped as much by its natural setting as by industrious human creativity, the city inspired Mozart, Strauss and Toscanini, amongst others. Intertwined with this heritage is the Hotel Sacher, member of The Leading Hotels of the World, built in 1866, the same year Salzburg joined the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The unchallenged social hub of the famous summer music festival, the hotel has welcomed leaders and luminaries from Sir Karl Popper to Placido Domingo. Set on the riverbank overlooking the Baroque Old Town and the Fortress Hohensalzburg, the family-run 5* deluxe hotel has classically decorated rooms, featuring antiques, silk-covered walls, oil paintings and crystal chandeliers. A destination in itself is the elegantly rustic Zirbelzimmer for classical Austrian cuisine.

Dining

Salzachgrill
Restaurant "Salzachgrill": the popular Salzachgrill offers specialities from the charcoal grill, to be enjoyed in casual atmosphere. In the summer months the ideal place to have dinner or lunch "al fresco".
Roter Salon
Restaurant "Roter Salon": the Roter Salon, fashioned in the architecture of the Biedermeier epoche, is situated on the promenade of the Salzach river.
Sacher Bar
Sacher Bar: the ultimate bar with live piano music is the perfect place for a drink before or after dinner. Cafe Sacher Salzburg: enjoy the Original Sacher-Torte with a cup of Original Sacher coffee in a typical Austrian "coffee-house"atmosphere with an elegant touch.
Zirbelzimmer
Restaurant "Zirbelzimmer" with terrace: the wooden panelled Zirbelzimmer with its artistically carved ceiling is unique in Salzburg and a favourite meeting place for gourmets.

Beautiful Hotel, Unexpected Fees

Would not recommend Fri, Jul 10, 2015
The hotel is beautiful and very charming with a lot of character. However, we were disappointed to find out upon checkout that we had a concierge fee for booking a tour. No one notified us of this fee and no other hotels in Europe charged us fees for booking tours. In addition, when we asked about a discount we had, the staff would not take it. Lesson learned, we should have booked the tour ourselves to avoid unnecessary fees. Throughout our stay the front desk staff seemed as if we were inconveniencing them as they were constantly busy, which may just be the case in the summer.

Genteel luxury and attentive service in Salzburg

Would recommend Fri, Oct 17, 2014
Spent two nights at the Hotel Sacher Salzburg recently and found the service at the hotel to be second-to-none. It is a true five-star experience in every respect. I booked a standard room, which was small by American standards, but perfectly appointed and with a perfect view of the Old Town and the fortress across the river. The bathroom had heated floors, a waterfall shower (though no bathtub) and chocolate-scented soaps/lotions. The room itself had a mini-bar, safe and a HUGE flat-screen TV (although only about three TV channels were in English, all of them news.) There is daily turndown service in addition to the regular housekeeping. And upon check-in, I found a fruit plate and a sample of the hotel's famous Sachertorte, which is out of this world. (I had also emailed a request for a carton of milk to be waiting for me in the mini-bar, and was pleased to see it there when I arrived.) The only complaint I had (and it was minor) is that the temperature in the room was hard to control. I tried playing with the air conditioning, but still found the room too hot/stuffy -- finally I just decided to open the window in the evenings, though this was a little complicated as the blinds had to be up in order for the window to open. I ate in both the grill and the fine dining restaurant during my stay and had two excellent meals with very attentive service. I also appreciated the location of the hotel, close to the Mirabell Gardens and easy to walk across the bridge to the Old Town. Overall, an excellent, world-class hotel. Highly recommended.

Dining

There are many variations on the Sachertorte available in Austria, but the original is definitely the best. Have a slice at the Sacher Cafe in the hotel!

Sacher in Salzburg

This Hotel is luxurious in appearance. The staff is very friendly and service oriented. However, the room rate, and breakfast were overpriced for the value.

Nice historic hotel

Would not recommend Fri, Oct 5, 2012
Room was very nice, staff friendly and responsive. Locations was very good next to the river, but do not expect a room with a view. They wanted an additional 700 euros per night to move to a room overlooking the old city. I think there are better options for the price so the value of this hotel is average at best even though the hotel is very nice, just overpriced.

There are great hotels for less.
