Good setting but don't spend too long in your room...

Problems: only one lift worked (and not very well at that) - not too bad for me as I was on the 3rd floor but a collegue on the 9th floor found the stairs a little tricky. The claeners provided clean cups, replenished tea and coffee etc on some days but not other. The room was grubby with dirty marks on the painted walls and with cracked tiles in the bathroom and nocturnal visitations by various insects. The TV only worked intermittently and there were no coat hangers in the room. The breakfast buffet was limited in choices. There were extensive building works going on in an adjacent building and so the noise starts early in the morning. Good points: friendly and polite staff especially the concierge who advised about where to go and what to do in Melbourne; also a cracking location - handy for china town.

Visiting Melbourne

This hotel was great for the location. Since it is located in the CBD most tour excursions will pick you up at the hotel and return you there when you are through. It was also close to restuarants. The tram was located one block away. The staff couldn't have been more helpful .Would definitely stay there again.

Good location but not deluxe

When the taxi stopped amid construction and chaos directly across from the property, I had serious doubts about this hotel. However, the location and friendliness of the reception and concierge staff made our stay worthwhile. Our king deluxe room was anything but deluxe. One digit on the temperature gauge was out so it was difficult to read the room temp, the bathroom was very small and there was not a place for our second suitcase. Extra items like snacks and beverages were not in the room but in a vending machine by the elevator which did not work. Everything downtown was within a short walk and the buses and trams were right outside the hotel door. All in all it was a good stay. I would recommend this Mecure to anyone but be sure to inform them that it is not a deluxe hotel.

Great location

Great location. Hallway/carpet had a damp, musty smell that never went away. Room was fine, a little small but was fine with me.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

If you want to check out the city, go the The Edge skyscraper, you get a full 360 degree view from the 85th floor. If you go in the early evening, you can catch it during daylight time then watch the sunset for 1 price. St. Kilde is pretty nice too if you want to hit the beach, short train ride away.

Worth the money

This was our third stay at the Mercure Welcome, which is the cheaper accommodation on the site shared with the Grand Mercure. We have never had a complaint about the hotel, in fact they upgraded us to a king room, which unfortunately was very noisy. There is insufficient insulation between the rooms and we could hear very loudly the water from bath/shower/toilet/taps from the adjacent rooms & the room above from our room 738. Fortunately this was not all the time and aside from that the room was clean and comfortable, with the hotel in a great location for sightseeing, shopping & transport. We will stay again and hope we get a room that is better insulated.
